Delhi aims for a drug-free city by 2027
The Delhi government's initiative to make the city drug-free by 2027 is a significant step towards addressing the issue of drug abuse and promoting a healthier society.
Speaking to the reporters on Sunday, Devesh Chandra Srivastava said, 'The fight against drug abuse is not that of the police alone. We need the cooperation of the public as well as all departments like education, health and drug control department. We are all fighting against drug abuse together. The Lieutenant Governor has given us the vision of a drug-free Delhi by 2027. Meaningful efforts are being made for this...The Chief Minister also participated in today's program and assured that the Delhi government and Delhi Police will work together against this evil.'
The Delhi government and Delhi Police are working together to tackle drug abuse, with the Chief Minister assuring support for the initiative. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and involve the public in the effort to create a drug-free society.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora also attended the program, which was held at Kartavya Path in the National capital to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
She assured that the Delhi government and Delhi Police will work together against this evil.
Last month, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested five individuals and dismantled a drug syndicate operating in the North Campus area of Delhi University, officials said.
According to officials, the accused were found in possession of 2,360 Tramadol-based capsules and 135 bottles of codeine-based syrup--both banned for non-prescription use, valued at over Rs 1 lakh in the international market.
DCP, ANTF Crime Apoorva Gupta stated that the action is part of the ongoing anti-drug campaign under the Government of India's 'Zero Tolerance' policy and the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.'
Acting on a tip-off, ANTF officials arrested Manish Bhatle (26), who was found carrying two sacks containing illegal drugs near Shri Ram Institute, University Road. He failed to produce any medical prescriptions or purchase invoices and was taken into custody on the spot. A drug inspector from the Drug Control Department confirmed the recovered substances were prohibited under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, they said. (ANI)

India has been added to the United Kingdom's expanded 'Deport Now Appeal Later' list of 23 countries, under which foreign criminals will be deported before they can appeal against the decision. Explaining the rationale behind the decision, the country's home secretary Yvette Cooper said, 'For far too long, foreign criminals have been exploiting our immigration system, remaining in the UK for months or even years while their appeals drag on. That has to end,' reported news agency PTI. She added, 'Those who commit crimes in our country cannot be allowed to manipulate the system, which is why we are restoring control and sending a clear message that our laws must be respected and will be enforced.' Who all are on the list Previously, the list included Finland, Nigeria, Estonia, Albania, Belize, Mauritius, Tanzania and Kosovo. The expanded list now adds India, Angola, Australia, Botswana, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Guyana, Indonesia, Kenya, Latvia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Uganda and Zambia. The UK government said discussions are ongoing with other nations to join the scheme. 'We are leading diplomatic efforts to increase the number of countries where foreign criminals can be swiftly returned, and if they want to appeal, they can do so safely from their home country,' said UK foreign secretary David Lammy. According to the home office, the new approach will reduce the burden on British taxpayers, as offenders from these countries previously remained in the UK long after completing their prison sentences. Around 5,200 foreign nationals have been deported since July 2024 — a 14 per cent rise over the previous year. Meanwhile, official data shows foreign offenders make up about 12 per cent of the UK's prison population, with annual prison costs averaging GBP 54,000 per inmate. (With PTI inputs)

Delhi police bust gambling racket
New Delhi: Ina significant crackdown, the Delhi Police have achieved two breakthroughs, including the busting of a gambling racket and the arrest of a notorious criminal in possession of an illegal firearm. Both operations were carried out by the Operations Cell and Kishangarh police station staff, demonstrating intensified efforts by Delhi Police to curb organised and street-level crime in the district. According to a press release issued by the South West District Police on Monday, a team from the Operations Cell apprehended six individuals involved in illegal gambling from the Kishangarh area. The accused, identified as Akil Khan (28), Rajeev Singh (44), Subham Kumar Chaurasiya (30), Chanderpal (50), Mahender Singh (60), and Washim (38), were caught red-handed during a raid conducted at a private dwelling based on specific intelligence input. 'With their arrest, stake money amounting to Rs 66,000 and a total of 104 playing cards were recovered from the spot,' the release stated. Acting on a tip-off received on August 8, the team conducted a swift raid under the leadership of Inspector Hari Singh and the supervision of ACP Vijay Singh. A case under the Delhi Public Gambling Act has been registered, and further investigation is underway. In a separate operation, the staff of the Kishangarh police station arrested a repeat offender identified as Sanjay, a 28-year-old resident of R.K. Puram. The arrest took place near Jhod, Pahadi Park in Munirka Village during routine patrolling on August 10. Upon noticing suspicious movement, police officers chased and apprehended the suspect, recovering a country-made pistol and two live cartridges from his possession. 'Sanjay is previously involved in seven cases of robbery, snatching, theft, and Arms Act violations registered at RK Puram and Kishangarh,' the press release stated. The accused, who is also reportedly a drug addict, confessed to using the illegal firearm in various crimes. An FIR under the Arms Act has been registered, and the weapon has been seized.

Broad daylight bank robbery in Jabalpur; probe launchep
Bhopal: Ina shocking incident, which exposed the picture of law and order in the state, a gang of five to six armed men looted a branch of ESAF Small Finance Bank in the Khitola area of Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur district on Monday. Masked men arrived on separate bikes, entered the bank premises and, brandishing pistols, executed the robbery in broad daylight. The incident unfolded between 9:30 to 10 am at a branch of the Isaaf Small Finance Bank located near the National Highway in Sihora and Khitauli crossing. Initial reports suggested the robbers stole approximately 10 kg of gold and Rs. 6 lakh cash. However, police said that the assessment of gold and cash can be more as the investigations are underway. Following the incident, Khitauli and Sihora police teams arrived at the scene and commenced investigations. An official said that the CCTV footage from the bank and the surrounding areas is being examined. However, the direction of the robbers' escape remains unknown. This sensational robbery has raised serious questions about law and order in the city. Sources said that miscreants decamped with nearly 10 kg of gold and around Rs 6 lakh in cash, though police have not confirmed the exact figures. 'A probe is being carried out, and CCTV cameras are being scanned. The exact amount of gold or cash that was robbed is not clear yet,' CSP Sihora, Aditya Singh said. Singh added that the initial investigation is underway, adding that an extensive search has been initiated and all police stations have been alerted. 'Multiple teams have been deployed, and the accused persons will be arrested as soon as possible,' Singh added.
