Services dominate 6th Junior National Boxing Championships, clinch team gold in both boys and girls categories
Backed by clinical performances across weight classes, the Services contingent wrapped up the week-long event at the National Boxing Academy in Rohtak with nine medals in each category. Their Boys squad tallied six golds, two silvers, and a bronze to reassert their dominance, while the Girls team delivered four golds, four silvers, and one bronze. Maharashtra completed the podium in the Boys championship, while Manipur finished third in the Girls division, said release.
On the girls' side, several familiar names from India's recent success at the Asian U-15 & U-17 Championships delivered once again. Delhi's Ahaana Sharma continued her blazing form in the 50kg final with a clean sweep. Khushi Chand of Uttarakhand clinched a narrow 3-2 win in the 46kg division, while Haryana's Anshika reaffirmed her dominance in the 80+kg category.
Services' dual team triumph was powered by a series of dominant final bouts across both divisions. In the Boys' competition, Udham Singh Raghav, a recent medalist in the Asian U-17 Championships, won gold in the 54kg category, while Sahil Duhan (60kg), Priyansh Sehrawat (70kg), Jaideep Singh Hanjra (80kg), and Rahul (80+kg) also secured top-podium finishes. Lakshay Balhara's 4-1 victory over Aman Siwach stood out, as did Haryana's Aditya, who edged past Tikam Singh in a closely contested 52kg final.
SSCB's girls team was bolstered by sharp wins from Naitik (52kg), Chandrika Pujari (54kg), Harsika (60kg), and Hamoor Kaur (66kg), the latter scoring a third-round stoppage. Prachi Khatri's powerful RSC victory in the 80kg class, along with title wins by Himanshi (70kg) and Jiya (48kg), further highlighted the depth of India's emerging female talent.
Manipur's Lanchenba Singh, who defeated Services' Piyush 3:2 in the 50kg category, was adjudged the Best Boxer in the Boys' category, while Lucky Bagdwal (57kg) of Uttarakhand was named the Most Promising. In the Girls' division, Haryana's Divya (63kg) and Jammu & Kashmir's Bareena (70kg) claimed the Best and the Most Promising awards, respectively. Pooja Duhan from Haryana was named the Best Referee, while Rajasthan's Vishal Nirwan was awarded the Best Judge honour.

Prithvi Shaw hits hundred on Maharashtra debut in Buchi Babu
Agency: Chennai, Aug 19 (PTI) Out-of-favour India batter Prithvi Shaw began his stint for Maharashtra with a sparkling hundred on debut in a Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament match against Chhattisgarh here on Tuesday. Shaw's century in the first innings came in 122 balls and included 14 fours and a six. The 25-year-old's knock on the second day of the match helped Maharashtra recover from a precarious position as the side at one stage lost four wickets for just 15 runs after an opening stand of 71 between Shaw and Sachin Dhas. After Maharashtra lost Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ankeet Bawne in quick succession, Shaw stitched a 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Siddharth Mhatre to steady the innings. After reaching his century with a single, Shaw quietly raised his bat and walked up to the other end to hug his partner. Shaw made 111 off 141 balls before being stumped off the bowling of leg-spinner Shubham Agrawal. Chhattisgarh had made 252 in 89.3 overs on the opening day. Shaw had earlier switched his allegiance from Mumbai to Maharasthra to revive his career. Once seen as a future India star after his exploits in U-19 World Cup and a scintillating century on Test debut, Shaw had joined Maharashtra earlier this year amid concerns around his form and fitness. He was dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad last season and wasn't picked for its Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign. Though he was part of the Mumbai squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 in December, his returns were a meagre 197 runs with the bat. Shaw last played for India in July 2021 and went unsold in last year's IPL auction for the first time in his career. A lot was said about the dashing batter from the border town of Fazilka, Punjab when he had made his international debut during the tour of New Zealand in early 2019. Gill, after all, was one of the shining stars in India's triumphant U-19 World Cup campaign the year before. It was only a matter of time before Gill began churning out those performances at the senior level, whether in international cricket or in the Indian Premier League, which would then lead to comparisons with iconic batter and leader Virat Kohli. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Fast forward to 2025, and Gill truly finds himself on top of the cricketing world. And the funny thing is that his life has transformed for the better in a matter of just three months. Gill, after all, was named Rohit Sharma's successor as Test captain in May after the 'Hitman' abruptly announced his retirement along with Kohli. He would then go on a record-breaking spree in his maiden Test series as captain as well as batting at the No 4 spot, playing a key role in helping his team walk away with a 2-2 draw. And now, the 25-year-old returns to the T20I side not just as a vital cog in the batting order but as the vice-captain more than a year after his last appearance for the Men in Blue in the format. One step closer to leadership across formats? The move all but confirms one thing – that the Indian team management as well as the board views him as the next all-formats captain. And that Tuesday's announcement was another step in that direction. There were doubts among experts and fans alike when Gill was first named Test captain, especially the perception of him being thrown into the deep end by touring a country where he had struggled with the bat in the past. However, an individual who is said to count both head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar among his fans isn't likely to be left out of a squad, especially for an event as important as the Asia Cup. With Gill now likely to open alongside Punjab and India teammate Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order and slots booked all the way till the lower middle-order, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson will most likely have to warm the bench in the Asia Cup and possibly even in next year's T20 World Cup. Samson has done little wrong to lose his place in the playing XI – he had, after all, smashed back-to-back centuries in the shortest format for the Men in Blue last year, and would end up with three centuries in a space of five outings as a result. Problem of plenty strikes Indian cricket again Then again, Indian cricket has been dealing with a problem of plenty for a while now, and that comes purely down to the success of India's domestic system and the IPL along with strong leadership and guidance in the national teams over the years. The result – Team India having plenty of match-winning options for each position or department across formats. Coming back to Gill, he isn't likely to remain vice-captain too long. The BCCI and the team management might be seeing Suryakumar as their leader for the T20I format till the end of the T20 World Cup. Once that's out of the way, he might be persuaded to give up his post for Gill, much like Rohit in Tests earlier this year. And even though both Rohit and Kohli have expressed their desire to play that tournament, the former presumably as captain, it won't come as a surprise if the powers of Indian cricket are already visualising Gill wear the captain's armband in cricket's showpiece event.

Buchi Babu Trophy 2025: Mazumdar, Sumanta drag Bengal close to Haryana on second day
In this year's Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, teams have only 90 overs to bat in their first innings — a format that blends the characteristics of First Class and List A. Under those constraints, even Anustup Mazumdar's authoritative century and Sumanta Gupta's fighting 98 could not prevent Bengal from conceding a 34-run lead to Haryana on Tuesday at the AM Jain College in Chennai. Mazumdar compiled a near-flawless 126 off 167 balls, holding the innings together after early trouble. He rebuilt with a 70-run stand alongside Sudip Gharami (45 off 73 balls), who was trapped leg-before by Sumit Kumar just before lunch, and then added 102 with Abishek Porel. The wicketkeeper-batter showcased some crisp cuts off spinners before falling on 39, edging pacer Ajay Singh while chasing a wide delivery. Mazumdar brought up his century off 134 balls but fell while trying to accelerate, miscuing a pull off spinner Aman Kumar to fine leg. With Bengal still 120 runs adrift of Haryana's 415, Sumanta took charge. He pierced through the gaps around the ground, went over the infield at times, and kept the scoreboard moving in a proactive knock that included seven fours. However, he fell short of his hundred by two runs while attempting a sharp double. Bengal eventually folded for 381, falling just short of parity. Led by Sumit Kumar's five for 32, Haryana bowlers will be satisfied with their disciplined effort in hot and humid conditions. They maintained tight lines, denied easy boundaries, and were backed by sharp ground fielding that ultimately made the difference between the two sides.
