Kaizer Chiefs latest: Where will Asanele Velebayi fit in at Naturena?
Asanele Velebayi is officially a Kaizer Chiefs player following the PSL DRC ruling to declare him a free agent on Monday. Of course, Cape Town Spurs feel cheated on by the latest developments given that they once wanted R10 million for Velebayi. However, that's not how the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (PSL DRC) saw the matter as they ruled in Velebayi's favour. Now, having been officially unveiled by Amakhosi on Tuesday, The South African takes a look at where the 22-year-old will fit in at Naturena. Velebayi is renowned for his speed and skill to eliminate opposition defenders, and this is the kind of player Chiefs needed. Given their quick transition play under Nasreddine Nabi, Chiefs need a speedy player to get into the opposition box as quickly as possible. Pule Mmodi has been that player for Chiefs over the past two seasons, but he's sometimes flat, and ended up not giving his team the much needed width. The majority of Chiefs wingers are not necessarily able to take on defenders, and often lose possession cheaply in the final third. And should Velebayi be given that role to play – either on the left or on the write wing – he shouldn't be expected to do much of a defending. After all, Velebayi was signed to strengthen Amakhosi's attack and help them score goals. He is a red-hot Bafana Bafana attacker who has been on their radar for quite some time. Amakhosi has just wrapped up the signing of Bafana Bafana winger, Asenale Velebayi. 'Chiefs Welcome Velebayi to Naturena We would like to announce the signing of Asanele Velebayi. The Cape Town-born winger has signed a long-term contract with the Club. He has penned down a four-year deal with Chiefs. Meaning, he will be an Amakhosi player until 2029. His teammate, Luke Baartman is expected to be unveiled next by Chiefs. This is because both players agreed to personal terms with Amakhosi before a legal dispute stalled their moves to Naturena. So, both players are clear to join the Soweto giants. Meanwhile, Amakhosi were spotted with a new coach on the sidelines. Interestingly, Chiefs management are unhappy over Nasreddine Nabi and they are set to hold key talks over his future – here is the latest. Furthermore, Chiefs have completed 18 deals. Amakhosi have 11 new players – SIX signings and FOUR players have been promoted. These THREE players from PSL rivals are close to joining Chiefs. However, what goes up must come down. Chiefs finally announce Velebayi signing
'The Cape Town-born winger has signed a long term contract with the club,' said Chiefs in a statement. Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the signing of 22 year-old winger Asenele Velebayi. ALSO READ: Chiefs confirm duo are available for Polokwane clash Velebayi signs on a free transfer after being declared a free agent this week by a Premier Soccer League Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC). Chiefs' new man 'We would like to announce the signing of Asanele Velebayi,' read a Chiefs statement. 'The Cape Town-born winger has signed a long term contract with the club.' Chiefs have been pursuing the signature of Velebayi since before the start of the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League campaign. At that stage Cape Town Spurs reportedly put a price tag of R12 million on his head. Spurs were relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of last season. And Chiefs looked to seize an opportunity, believing they could sign the player as a free agent, with Spurs demoted to amateur status. Spurs contested this, but this week Velebayi was declared a free agent, sparking outrage from the Mother City club. 'A legal and logical catastrophe' 'While on the surface it appears to be a victory for player freedom, the ruling is a legal and logical catastrophe – one built on contradictory reasoning and a wilful ignorance of contractual law. More alarmingly, it has fired a fatal shot into the heart of football development, threatening to make long-term investment in young talent an unsustainable, and ultimately pointless endeavour.' Amakhosi's next match is a DStv Premiership clash with Polokwane City at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night. Chiefs are also hoping to sign former Spurs forward Luke Baartman, with a similar case still awaiting an outcome.
