One of Scotland's worst conmen with 100 convictions strikes again on prison leave
Robert Markward, who specialises in conning the elderly, tricked nine pensioners by posing as a student nurse, handyman and electrician, swiping cash, purses and bank cards.
Robert Markward
One of Scotland's worst conmen has been jailed again - as a judge stated he "specialised in preying on the elderly".
Robert Markward - who already had more than 100 convictions - was on home leave from prison when he committed his latest crimes.
The 64 year-old duped nine victims by posing as a student nurse, a handyman and an electrician to steal cash, purses and bank cards from the homes of pensioners in Ayrshire.
A man alerted to how he had targeted one OAP physically tackled him, but Markward lashed out by pushing and punching him.
The serial crook was back in the dock at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday, August 12.

He had earlier been convicted after a trial in Kilmarnock of 10 charges of dishonesty, theft and fraud.
The offences occurred between December 2022 and March 2023 at sheltered and retirement accommodation.
It was Markward's fifth high court conviction all for similar crimes.
These included a six year sentence in 2005 when he targeted pensioners by claiming to be a priest and a hospice worker.
Markward was jailed for 10 years in 2016.

He had claimed at that case police and prosecutors were "pure rude" and "telling lies" - but he was caught for one of those thefts after dropping his bus ticket at the scene.
Lady Ross sentenced him to a total of nine years for these latest "nasty" incidents.
She told Markward: "You have made a career out of crimes of dishonesty. You have specialised in preying on elderly people. You are prepared to be violent when challenged."
Lady Ross said she had read emotional impact statements including one from the daughter of an elderly victim.
The judge: "For a while she felt stupid allowing someone she did not know into her flat, but he was convincing and trusted him.
"She is a strong sensible lady, but this event has shaken her confidence in strangers."
Lady Ross remarked this set of offences included being at the same sheltered housing complex Markward had originally targeted in earlier offences more than 20 years ago.
She further paid tribute to the "bravery" of the man who confronted violent Markward.
The most recent targets of Markward were aged between 64 and 99.
In one, he pretended to be a handyman called Stevie to steal a purse containing £350.
Markward also tricked another OAP by claiming to be a friend of her late neighbour.
A number of the crimes were committed on the same day at sheltered accommodation in Ayr. Other offences occurred in nearby Prestwick.
Like previous cases, Markward had again insisted he was not guilty His KC Gillian Ross today said: "In line with his evidence (at trial), he continues to deny his involvement.
"There can be no denying that, in part, the (pre-sentencing) social work report does not reflect well on him given his denial.

Six men jailed for combined 101 years over gangland attacks
The mob's crime included ambushing a man whose hand was left hanging off as well as the torching of prison officers' cars. They were sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday, having been found guilty after a lengthy trial last month. The crimes occurred in and around Edinburgh in 2022 and 2023. READ MORE: Nigel Farage's Reform peers demand reignites calls for House of Lords to be scrapped Michael Heeps was jailed for 23 years – he had been convicted of eight charges, including three attempted murders and being involved in the blazes at HMP Addiewell. The 34-year-old is a trusted lieutenant of Edinburgh crime boss Mark Richardson. John Murray, 25, was jailed for 17 years for five charges involving two murder bids. Lee Ridgway, 33, was involved in three of the attempted murders and the incidents at Addiewell. He was sentenced to 22 years. Dale Bauld, 33, will serve 17 years for his part in two of the violent attacks. Damien Mullen, 26, was imprisoned for 14 years for attempted murder and the torching of the cars. Ryan McGovern – who had fled the UK – was involved in the Addiewell blazes. The 33-year-old was jailed for eight years. Lord Mulholland said on Friday: 'The courts and the public will not put up with this type of out-of-control gangsterism. 'The sentences that I impose are intended to punish and deter you and anyone else who is considering engaging in this behaviour. 'The message to the public for those that may be contemplating or emulating you is 'don't, as there will be a very high price to pay'.' READ MORE: Charity rowers mistaken for 'illegal migrants' by Rupert Lowe arrive in Scotland Ryan Brown was one of the gang's victims, having been attacked near his home in the capital's Pilton on January 5, 2023. The 30-year-old was walking to a friend's house when a car raced up and a machete wielding assailant 'casually' got out to strike him. Brown recalled trying to fend off the blows as the weapon was wildly swung at him. He shouted at the balaclava-clad attacker: 'What are you doing, mate?' – but the thug remained silent. Brown slumped to the ground in agony. He told prosecutor John Keenan KC: "I remember screaming and everyone running over. My hand was literally hanging off. "I thought I was dying on the doorstep." He was rushed to hospital, where he was in the operating theatre for 12 hours. This included surgery to repair his hand. Mr Brown told the trial he remains affected by what happened and is expecting further operations. He said speaking about it again was "bringing back bad memories". Peajmaan Khosrowpour was earlier targeted in a 'high speed chase' between Edinburgh and Dalkeith. He was forced off the road and his car smashed into a wall. The man was left with a 'large gaping wound' to his arm after he was struck with machetes. He also needed a number of operations, has been left scarred for life and remains physically affected by the incident. A physio has told him his condition is "as good as its going to get". Robert McLintock was ambushed by masked attackers in late January 2023 in the capital's Ferniehill area. He ended up intensive care and a coma following the assault. Kieran Jenkins had also been targeted in December 2022 in Bilston, near Edinburgh. They were said to be 'lying in wait' before confronting him as he was in his car. They smashed the vehicle up with bladed weapons. He fortunately escaped unharmed. In a 999 call, Jenkins, however, said the attackers had tried to 'chop him up'. READ MORE: Major emergency rescue operation launched as man missing in river Keenan told jurors: "It is plain they planned to attack Kieran Jenkins and cause him harm. "He was left in no doubt that was their intention. There was no injury, but you can still regard this as a murderous attack." The fire attacks at HMP Addiewell occurred on January 7, 2023. A total of six vehicles were set alight late at night designed to intimidate prison staff. The court heard how CCTV footage and forensic evidence helped catch the mob, who had also tried to intimidate a witness by leaving a note calling her 'a grass'. McGovern had fled the UK initially via Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute and onto Dublin. He went on travel to the Netherlands before going to Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. He was eventually traced and extradited back to Scotland.

Man left dog trembling in fear during three-hour attack with iron and bottle
A man left a dog trembling in fear after a three-hour attack in which he struck the animal with an iron and a bottle. Daniel Murphy also struck the one-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier with his fists during one prolonged beating in Ayrshire. In another attack, video footage showed him picking up the dog, named Buster, by his legs and tail and throwing and dragging him across a room. On two occasions, he was seen pouring a liquid over the dog's head and face. After a trial at Ayr Sheriff Court, the 43-year-old from Prestwick was jailed for nine months and banned from owning animals for life over the campaign of abuse and cruelty. He was sentenced following a successful prosecution by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS). He pleaded guilty to a charge under animal health and welfare legislation. Anne Marie Hicks, procurator fiscal for North Strathclyde, said: 'Daniel Murphy carried out attacks on his dog which were horrific and cruel. 'This poor animal endured a shocking ordeal and was subjected to terrible mental and physical abuse. 'The images on video were extremely distressing, but Daniel Murphy has now been brought to account for his crimes. 'We take such criminality seriously, and the public can be assured that we will prosecute such matters where there is a sufficiency of evidence to do so.' In November 2024, a housing support officer with South Ayrshire Council was alerted to multiple videos showing Murphy abusing Buster. It came after the Scottish SPCA separately received calls on their helpline about a dog being abused at Murphy's address. The video footage, provided anonymously by another individual, showed him attacking the dog with his fists and other objects as well as shouting, swearing, and throwing the animal around the room. Twenty-six videos were later viewed by officers at the Scottish SPCA. Prosecutors told the court the dog was visibly terrified throughout the full ordeal. It frequently rolled onto its side in submission in an attempt to avoid more blows and was seen panting and trembling. Scottish SPCA staff, along with two police officers, eventually seized the dog from the premises of a man who said he was looking after it while Murphy was in London. On his return, Murphy was informed he would face legal action. A vet who examined the dog identified ongoing swelling over the left side of his skull, pain at his left shoulder and left thigh, and lameness on his left hind leg. Buster was successfully rehomed within a week of being seized.
