China's Wang Yi calls for ‘new international agreement' on Iran after US, Israeli attacks
Wang Yi has called for a 'new international agreement' on Iran while accusing the United States and Israel of destabilising the Middle East through military actions on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot in Paris on Friday, Wang also voiced deep concerns about escalating tensions in the region and warned of the looming spectre of a 'nuclear disaster'.
His remarks came as Beijing, a key ally of an increasingly isolated Tehran, intensified its criticism of the US and Israel following last month's pre-emptive strikes on Iranian personnel and nuclear facilities. China has also continued to style itself as a responsible power and key mediator.
Wang, who is currently on a
European tour , reaffirmed that China valued Iran's repeated pledges not to develop nuclear weapons, while also respecting its right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
'On this basis, relevant parties should accelerate negotiations towards a new international agreement to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue, and place Iran's nuclear activities fully under the strict supervision and safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),' he said without further elaboration, according to China's foreign ministry.
'The road to peace lies beneath our feet, and history will judge each party's sincerity.'

Hong Kong should immediately introduce a residency period for subsidised university degree places instead of gradually implementing it over two years, to prevent the dependants of non-local talent from exploiting the transition, a concern group has said. Authorities said that eligibility would be tightened over a transition period, with a one-year residency requirement to be introduced for the 2027-28 academic year, before the threshold rose to two years for 2028-29, to give people a reasonable amount of time to make plans. The coming policy means candidates sitting their DSE exams next year will be unaffected, while students taking the assessments in 2027 would only be subject to a one-year residency requirement.

Lawyers for former Hong Kong media boss Jimmy Lai Chee-ying have argued that his 'armchair punditry' did not support prosecutors' contention that he masterminded a conspiracy to instigate Western sanctions, prompting a judge to note that his comments could be interpreted as 'disguised requests'. 'If you take it neutrally, he's concerned with human rights, he's being careful with his words. How can then you draw the inference, not that he was just requesting sanctions, but he was also part of a conspiracy to do so?' Pang said. China calls for joint patrols on Afghan border and urges Taliban to help fight terrorism
China has called for greater counterterrorism cooperation with Afghanistan, including joint patrols along the narrow strip of land that forms their only shared border. 'China supports the prompt resumption of bilateral patrols in the Wakhan Corridor to maintain peace and stability in the border region,' Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during a meeting with the Afghan acting minister of interior affairs, Sirajuddin Haqqani. The Wakhan Corridor is a narrow strip of mountainous Afghan territory that divides Tajikistan and Pakistan, including Pakistani-held parts of Kashmir, and includes a 74km (46-mile) border with China's Xinjiang region. Beijing has repeatedly voiced concerns that Uygur militants could cross from Afghanistan into Xinjiang through that route. On Wednesday, on his first trip to the country since March 2022, Wang called on the Taliban government to combat terrorist groups such as the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) , a Uygur separatist group. 'We hope the Afghan side will continue to do its utmost to combat the ETIM terrorist forces, clearing obstacles and injecting momentum into the in-depth development of China-Afghanistan relations,' he told acting Afghan foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.
