NIA to probe murder of former Bajrang Dal leader Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru after MHA approval
NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has given its nod to hand over the probe into the murder of former Bajrang Dal leader Suhas Shetty in Karnataka's Mangaluru last month to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Shetty, the prime accused in the 2022 murder of a 23-year-old man named Mohammed Fazil, was killed by a group of assailants on May 1 near Kinnipadavu. So far, local police have arrested 11 people in connection with the murder.
According to the officials, the NIA will now investigate Shetty's murder case after it received a communication from the MHA allowing it to take up the case. The anti-terror agency will take police remand of all the accused and question them in detail about the case.
According to the police, five to six men armed with swords and sharp weapons intercepted Shetty's car and attacked him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
Shetty's murder triggered widespread unrest across the Dakshina Kannada district, with the police enforcing prohibitory orders, suspending public transport, and political groups demanding a central investigation into the murder.
Shetty, 42, was a well-known figure in coastal Karnataka's political undercurrent, with a long-standing association with Hindutva organisations like the Bajrang Dal. He had five criminal cases against him and was considered a rowdy-sheeter.
Shetty's name came to national attention in 2022 as a key accused in the murder of Fazil, a case that intensified communal tensions in the region.
Notably, Fazil's murder occurred just two days after the killing of BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettaru in Sullia, which significantly heightened tensions across coastal Karnataka.

Chandrapur: Ballarpur police have arrested seven individuals in connection with the circulation of an objectionable video on social media that allegedly depicted an attempt to have sexual intercourse with a cow. They include Pralhad Bhatu Rathod (65), who was allegedly involved in the act, Vijay Mohan Pal (22), who recorded the video, and Shubham Sudhakar Khobragade (29), who uploaded the video three months later, Harshad alias Golu Ramesh Ghotekar (27), Vijay Madhukar Dhok (26), Purushottam Gyanbaji Sahare (42), and Naresh Shiva Verma (32) are all accused of sharing the video on social media platforms. The operation conducted under the supervision of superintendent of police Mummaka Sudarshan, was executed by inspector Shyam Gawhane of Ballarpur police station with assistance from his team and the Cyber Police Unit. Police have appealed to citizens to act responsibly while using social media and avoid posting or sharing content that could hurt religious sentiments or disrupt communal harmony. The public has also been urged to promptly report such content to authorities to help maintain social peace and order.

Shetty, a prominent right-wing youth leader associated with the Bajrang Dal in Karnataka's coastal belt, was brutally murdered last month in Sullia town of Dakshina Kannada district. The activist, in his early 30s, was attacked by unidentified assailants while returning home late at night. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The incident triggered widespread protests in the region, with local Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) units alleging a targeted killing. Official sources, privy to the development, told ANI that 'the MHA has handed over the case to the NIA for investigation and registration.' NIA probe ordered into rowdy-sheeter Suhas Shetty's murder
MANGALURU: The Union government has ordered a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the murder of rowdy-sheeter and Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty. The development is seen as a setback to the Congress government in Karnataka which had refused to hand over the case to NIA stating that police are competent enough to investigate it. An order from Ministry of Home Affairs said the Central Government opines that a Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has been committed in the instant case. It added that with regard to the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, it is required to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency in accordance with the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008. 'Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (5) of section 6 read with section 8 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, the Central Government hereby directs the National Investigation Agency to take up investigation of the aforesaid case,' said the order. Suhas Shetty, an accused in two murders, was travelling in a car when he was hacked to death by a gang of persons in Bajpe Police Station limits near Mangaluru city on May 1.
