SFI meeting urges people to extend solidarity with Palestine
Former MLC K.S. Lakshmana Rao on Tuesday raised serious concern over the devastating humanitarian crisis caused by wars around the world, particularly in Palestine, where countless families have lost their homes and are living under miserable conditions.
He was speaking at a seminar titled 'Say No to War', organised by the Andhra Pradesh Student Federation of India (SFI) as part of a nation-wide awareness programme coinciding with the 18th All-India Conference of the federation being held at Kozhikode in Kerala. Mr. Lakshmana Rao said that the daily life of Palestinians has been marked by constant restrictions, violence and oppression. The event was organised to raise awareness among students about the need for global peace and an end to wars.
He added that it was not merely a political or geographical issue, but a humanitarian crisis and criticised the United States of America (U.S.A.) for 'fuelling wars worldwide to assert its dominance'. He also condemned the BJP-led NDA government's foreign policy, accusing it of acting like a puppet in the hands of U.S..
SFI's State secretary K. Prasanna Kumar said that wars, regardless of where they occurred, resulted in grave human loss and called for solidarity with Palestine as a stand for peace, equality and humanity. He said that everybody should support a free and sovereign Palestine.
The student federation leaders paid tributes to M. Saibaba, who served as the organisation's city president in Vijayawada in the past. The federation's State president P. Rammohan Rao, vice-presidents Ch. Venkateswara Rao and M. Kiran, State committee members Samaram, Amulya, Navita, Sai, Ganesh Nayak, Praneeth, Shanmukh, Kumar, Madhav and others were also present.

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Tuesday questioned the intention of the BJP-led Union government over the caste census, accusing them of delaying the exercise earlier by citing COVID as an excuse. On caste census, Congress leader Sachin Pilot told reporters, 'BJP and PM Modi had earlier said that the demand for a caste census is being raised by 'Urban Naxals', and they even mentioned in parliament in writing that they do not want to conduct it. After pressure from the opposition, they suddenly accepted our demand. But the notification now says the census will be conducted in 2027. He also questioned the budget allocation to start the exercise in 2027. 'Earlier, they delayed it using COVID as an excuse, and even now, we doubt their intention to fulfil this promise. Around Rs 8,000-10,000 crore is usually spent on the census, but this government has allocated only Rs 570 crore in the budget' He stated that the caste census ensures that the government schemes' benefits reach every beneficiary. 'The caste census is not just to know a person's caste -- it is to ensure that government schemes are reaching the people, to check whether they are benefiting from them, and to understand the employment rate...' The notification to conduct the Census was published in the official Gazette on Monday, following a high-level meeting held in Delhi, where the Home Minister reviewed the plan along with the Union Home Secretary, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG&CCI), and other senior officials. The Population Census 2027 will begin with a reference date of March 1, 2027, for most parts of the country. The reference date for snow-bound and non-synchronous areas such as Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): BJP leader Amit Malviya on Tuesday hailed the Calcutta High Court's decision that granted interim stay on the West Bengal Government's OBC list notification and said it is another blow to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's 'politics of appeasement'. The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday gave an interim stay on the West Bengal government's recently issued notifications on the OBC list till July 31. A division bench comprising Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Rajasekhar Mantha passed the interim order while hearing petitions challenging the state's classification of communities under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. Malviya, who is in-charge of BJP's National Information & Technology Dept and BJP's co-incharge of West Bengal, attacked the ruling Trinamool Congress government and said it made a desperate attempt to appease a vote bank and 'is a telling commentary on how far the TMC will go to cling to power'. He alleged that West Bengal Government's recent notifications attempted to reintroduce OBC reservations for several Muslim groups 'Another blow to Mamata Banerjee's politics of appeasement! 'On June 3, 2025, WB government increased OBC reservation in State Services to 17% (from 7%) -- clearly to benefit these newly included Muslim groups.
