Amid uncertainty over alliance with BJP, JD(S) sets out to strengthen party machinery
Bengaluru: JD(S) has launched a state-wide organisational revival drive as doubts swirl around its alliance with BJP in Karnataka. In a strategic move, JD(S) kicked off an ambitious online membership campaign on Sunday, aiming to enrol 50 lakh new members by Aug 15.
As part of the campaign, JD(S) youth wing president Nikhil Kumaraswamy began a state tour on Monday from Tumakuru, focusing first on southern Karnataka districts — considered the Vokkaliga heartland — in a bid to consolidate the party's core support base.
The heightened political activity in JD(S) comes amid rising tension within BJP over the future of the alliance. The two parties, which had earlier jointly taken on the Congress-led govt, have recently conducted separate agitations — notably over price rise and the M Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede incident, where they refrained from presenting a united front.
While both parties have confirmed they will contest upcoming zilla and taluk panchayat polls separately, a section of BJP functionaries is pushing to sever ties entirely ahead of the next assembly elections.
"BJP is strong enough to defeat Congress on its own," said Sakaleshpur legislator S Manjunath, popularly known as Cement Manju. "An alliance with JD(S) could deny us a clear mandate."
But JD(S) functionaries insist an alliance is crucial to challenge Congress' dominance in the state.

Former MLC and party election coordinator KA Tippeswamy said the alliance primarily targets assembly and parliamentary polls and would continue for the next assembly election as well. "Our party brass has decided to leave it to district functionaries to decide on a tie-up for ZP and TP elections," he said.

dismissed rumours of a rift.
"The alliance is intact. Vested interests are even spreading canards about my health. Those spreading rumours about the fragility of the alliance or about my health will be proven wrong. We will present a united front to defeat Congress," Kumaraswamy said.
Sources indicate BJP's central leadership is in favour of the alliance, given growing concerns about internal cohesion and the party's struggle to consolidate Vokkaliga votes.
They point out that while BJP state president BY Vijayendra faces resistance from some factions, a significant section of BJP members, especially from the Vokkaliga community, view the partnership with JD(S) as vital.
Former deputy chief minister and senior BJP legislator CN Ashwath Narayan echoed this sentiment, saying, "Our mission is to oust this corrupt and incompetent govt and ensure a Congress-mukt Karnataka. We will do whatever is necessary, and our high command will take a final call on the alliance and election strategy."

New Delhi: On paper, the odds seem skewed. Israel, a nation of just nine million, is taking on Iran – a regional heavyweight with nearly 90 million people and vastly greater territory. Tel Aviv has built a sophisticated edge with modern weaponry, much of it supplied by the United States and a seasoned intelligence network that reaches far beyond its borders. Israeli jets, equipped with precision-guided munitions, have executed strikes deep inside Iranian territory. Satellite images released on June 15 revealed significant damage to infrastructure above ground in Natanz, one of Iran's key nuclear sites. Israel has claimed near-total control over Tehran's airspace, emphasising that most of Iran's aging fighter jets never even took off. Much of this air dominance stems from Israel's use of U.S.-made aircraft and munitions, including long-range missiles capable of disabling ground-based air defense systems. In one notable operation last October, Israel targeted Iran's S-300 missile defense system from a distance, neutralising a key layer of Iranian protection. Even before air raids began, intelligence agents embedded in Iran reportedly paved the way. Israeli operatives smuggled drones across the border to locate and strike remaining air defense units. These drone strikes, along with the targeted elimination of several Iranian military commanders, crippled Iran's ability to respond quickly. The Arsenal and the Allies Estimates suggest Iran once held the largest arsenal of ballistic missiles in the region, numbering between 2,000 and 3,000. Israel now claims to have destroyed a substantial portion of those, including key production sites and missile launchers. One-third of Iran's surface-to-surface launch systems have reportedly been rendered inoperable. Despite these setbacks, Iran is not out of the game. It still retains short-range air defense missiles that could threaten Israeli aircraft. Military analysts believe Israel, while dominant in the skies for now, has yet to fully neutralise the Iranian threat. Tehran's regional allies have also struggled to offer meaningful resistance. Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza – both long-time beneficiaries of Iranian support – have seen their frontline capabilities severely diminished. However, Yemen's Houthi rebels continue to launch missiles toward Israeli targets, even downing several surveillance drones despite U.S. airstrikes. Beyond the battlefield, Israel relies heavily on Washington. The Iron Dome missile interceptors, bunker-busting bombs and the advanced fighter jets it uses all originate from the United States. Some of these weapons, particularly those capable of reaching deep underground sites like Fordow, are still withheld by Washington. President Donald Trump is reported to have blocked Israeli plans to target Iran's Supreme Leader directly. Even with unmatched air power and intelligence, Israel faces limits. It can disrupt Iran's nuclear ambitions, but fully dismantling them appears out of reach. Changing Iran's leadership remains an even more distant goal. For now, what Israel has achieved is tactical disruption. Whether that translates to strategic success remains to be seen.

Forest land fraud: ED carries out searches at multiple locations
MUMBAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday carried out searches at multiple locations in Maharashtra including the premises of BJP leader and businessman JM Mhatre in connection with its money-laundering investigation into an alleged land fraud in Vahal village under Raigad district. Mhatre is accused of acquiring forest land illegally in 2005 by making duplicate entries in mutation records and subsequently surrendering the land to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) in lieu of ₹42.4 crore as compensation. Another accused allegedly received ₹9.69 crore in similar fashion. Mutation records are official documents which record changes in ownership of property. Mhatre, a former Panvel Municipal Council president, is the chairman of JM Mhatre Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, a construction company. He was a Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) leader for nearly four decades before he shifted to the BJP recently. On Tuesday, the ED's Mumbai unit conducted searches at two of Mhatre's premises in Panvel. HT reached out to him for his comments regarding the ED's action and the allegations against him but he did not respond despite repeated attempts. The ED on Tuesday also conducted searches at a location in Dadar to unearth details related to the land fraud and trace the alleged proceeds of crime, agency officials said. The ED's ECIR (Enforcement Complaint Information Report) in the case is based on a first information report (FIR) registered by the Panvel police on the basis of a complaint by the forest department. According to the ED, Mhatre had acquired four hectares of land in survey number 436/1 (area of 110.60 hectare) in Vahal village under Panvel tehsil in Raigad district illegally by forging mutation records, and subsequently transferred 1.86 hectares to the NHAI for a compensation of ₹42.4 crore. Similarly, a co-accused identified as S Qadri, now deceased, had allegedly transferred 0.42 hectares of land at survey number 427/1 to the NHAI and received ₹9.69 crore as compensation, said ED officers. The land in question originally belonged to the erstwhile Nizam of Hyderabad, said sources in the ED. The state government had enacted the Maharashtra Private Forests (Acquisition) Act in 1975 to prevent grabbing of such forest land and subsequently transferred the ownership of such land to itself, the sources added.

No tie-up with BJP allies, says Sharad Pawar amid reunion buzz
Amid renewed speculation over a possible patch-up with the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Sharad Pawar on Tuesday dismissed any such move, warning against aligning with those he described as indulging in 'opportunistic politics' by joining hands with the BJP. Speaking at a gathering of Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) workers in Pimpri-Chinchwad, the octogenarian leader issued a clear but indirect rebuke to his own partymen as well as those from his nephew Ajit Pawar-led party. Without naming him, Pawar senior said those who abandoned the party to share power with the BJP had moved away from the ideological foundation laid by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Jyotirao Phule, and BR Ambedkar. 'There's talk of taking everyone along. But who is everyone?' Pawar asked. 'I am willing to work with those who uphold the values of Gandhi, Nehru, Phule, and Ambedkar. But aligning with the BJP for the sake of power is not in line with that ideology.' The remarks come at a time when rumours of a reunion between the two NCP factions have gained momentum, following several public appearances and meetings between the uncle-nephew duo. However, Sharad Pawar's pointed comments have made it clear that reconciliation was not on the cards, at least for now, when local body polls in 29 Municipal Corporations and several Councils are just a few months away. When asked for his reaction to Pawar's statement, Ajit Pawar offered a non-committal response, saying only, 'Everyone has the right to express their opinion.' Last week, speaking at the party's 26th Foundation Day event in Pune, Ajit Pawar had avoided giving a definitive answer on the merger issue, saying such decisions are taken by top leaders, not by party workers or junior leaders. State NCP chief Sunil Tatkare, however, was more categorical at that time. 'There is no such proposal,' he had said when asked about the possibility of the two factions coming together again. In Tuesday's programme, Sharad Pawar also urged his supporters not to be disheartened by leaders who had defected from the party. 'People have come and gone many times in my political journey. The focus now must be on preparing for upcoming local body elections,' he said, reaffirming his faith in the political judgement of the electorate. 'Democracy survives in this country not because of leaders, but because of the wisdom of ordinary citizens.' The NCP, founded by Sharad Pawar in 1999, split in July 2023 after Ajit Pawar and a group of MLAs joined the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government in Maharashtra. Ajit Pawar was sworn in as deputy chief minister, and eight of his loyalists were inducted as ministers. In a significant blow to Sharad Pawar's camp, the Election Commission later ruled in favour of Ajit Pawar, recognising his faction as the legitimate NCP and granting it the party's original 'clock' symbol. In the months that followed, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) saw mixed fortunes, performing relatively well in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls but facing challenges in the subsequent state assembly elections. The latest comments signal a renewed push by the senior Pawar to consolidate his base ahead of civic and state-level contests.
