"We doubt their intention to fulfil this promise regarding caste census": Sachin Pilot

India Gazette3 hours ago

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Tuesday questioned the intention of the BJP-led Union government over the caste census, accusing them of delaying the exercise earlier by citing COVID as an excuse.
On caste census, Congress leader Sachin Pilot told reporters, 'BJP and PM Modi had earlier said that the demand for a caste census is being raised by 'Urban Naxals', and they even mentioned in parliament in writing that they do not want to conduct it. After pressure from the opposition, they suddenly accepted our demand. But the notification now says the census will be conducted in 2027.
He also questioned the budget allocation to start the exercise in 2027.
'Earlier, they delayed it using COVID as an excuse, and even now, we doubt their intention to fulfil this promise. Around Rs 8,000-10,000 crore is usually spent on the census, but this government has allocated only Rs 570 crore in the budget'
He stated that the caste census ensures that the government schemes' benefits reach every beneficiary.
'The caste census is not just to know a person's caste -- it is to ensure that government schemes are reaching the people, to check whether they are benefiting from them, and to understand the employment rate...'
The notification to conduct the Census was published in the official Gazette on Monday, following a high-level meeting held in Delhi, where the Home Minister reviewed the plan along with the Union Home Secretary, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG&CCI), and other senior officials.
The Population Census 2027 will begin with a reference date of March 1, 2027, for most parts of the country. The reference date for snow-bound and non-synchronous areas such as Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026. (ANI)

India-Canada relations 'extremely important': PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said relations between India and Canada are 'extremely important' and the two nations should work together to achieve win-win cooperation in various sectors. Prime Minister Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney held bilateral discussions on the margins of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, on Tuesday (June 17, 2025). This was the first meeting between the two leaders since Mr. Carney assumed office in May 2025. G7 summit LIVE | Follow the latest updates on June 17, 2025 Congratulating Mr. Carney on his 'grand victory' in the election, PM Modi said, 'I am sure under your leadership, we will be able to work together in a positive way and take the India-Canada relationship forward.' 'I believe that India-Canada relations are extremely important, and India and Canada should work together and achieve win-win cooperation in several areas,' PM Modi said in his remarks ahead of the bilateral meeting. He said Canadian companies have invested in India in a big way, and Indian people have also invested in Canada substantially. 'We both stand for democratic values. Together, we can strengthen democratic values, we can strengthen humanity,' PM Modi said, adding that if the two nations work together and optimally utilise all their resources, 'We can work for the welfare of the entire humanity.' 'I am extremely confident that we'll be able to do this task,' said PM Modi, who is in Canada at the invitation of Mr. Carney to attend the G7 Summit. 'Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Complimented him and the Canadian Government for successfully hosting the G7 Summit,' PM Modi said in an X post. 'India and Canada are connected by a strong belief in democracy, freedom and rule of law. PM Carney and I look forward to working closely to add momentum to the India-Canada friendship. Areas like trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals, fertilisers and more offer immense potential in this regard,' he said. In his opening remarks ahead of the meeting, Mr. Carney said it was a great honour to host PM Modi at the G7. He said India has been participating in the G7 since 2018, and this is a 'testament to the importance of your country, to your leadership, and to the importance of the issues that we look to tackle together - from energy security, from the energy transition that you're hoping to lead, to the future of artificial intelligence, to the fight that we have against transnational repression, against terrorism, against other factors, and the work that we can do together.' 'It is my great honour to have you here. I enjoyed your intervention just now and look forward to our discussion,' Mr. Carney said. PM Modi further said that he was happy to get the opportunity to visit Canada after 2015 and to be in touch with the people of Canada. This is his first visit to Canada in a decade. 'India is the largest democracy in the world. During our chair of the G20 Summit, we took many initiatives for the welfare of the world, and today we are extending that resolve through the G7 summit and going to execute it through the help of this platform as well.' PM Modi said this is a great opportunity 'for us to serve the public good, the global good. It has always been India's intention to promote global goods, and today through G7 we have that same opportunity.' Mr. Carney's invitation to PM Modi to attend the G7 Summit signalled the new government's intent to repair the ties with New Delhi that plummeted to an all-time low over the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In October last year, India recalled its high commissioner and five other diplomats after Ottawa attempted to link them to the Nijjar case. India also expelled an equal number of Canadian diplomats. India had accused former prime minister Justin Trudeau's government of allowing pro-Khalistani elements to operate from Canadian soil. Mr. Carney, an economist and political newcomer, took charge as Canada's new prime minister in March following the exit of Trudeau from the top office. After Trudeau's exit, New Delhi said it hoped to rebuild ties with Canada based on 'mutual trust and sensitivity'. In the last few months, the security officials of India and Canada resumed contact, and both sides were looking at the possibility of appointing new high commissioners. Describing India and Canada as 'vibrant democracies', the external affairs ministry said last week that New Delhi believes the meeting between the prime ministers of the two countries on the sidelines of the G7 Summit will offer an important opportunity to exchange views and 'explore pathways' to reset bilateral ties. During PM Modi's last visit in 2015, bilateral ties were elevated to the level of strategic partnership. Bilateral trade in goods in 2024 stood at $8.6 billion. India exported $4.2 billion and imported $4.4 billion worth of goods. Bilateral trade in services in 2024 stood at $14.3 billion, with India exporting $2.5 billion and importing $11.8 billion worth of services.

Stampede deaths: BJP puts caste spin on police officers' suspensions

Bengaluru: Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, opposition leader in the council, Tuesday alleged that the decision to suspend top police officers, including Bengaluru city police commissioner, for the stampede at Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, was linked to the caste of the officers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He was speaking during a dharna by at Freedom Park in Bengaluru to protests the govt's handling of the affair. Eleven people died in the stampede and scores others were injured. "The poor police commissioner is an ST, and the ACP is from an SC community," said Narayanaswamy. "If the govt had suspended the head of intelligence (Hemant) Nimbalkar, then CM would have ended up as a former CM." Several Karnataka BJP functionaries spoke during the protest, which was originally scheduled for June 13 but was postponed after the Ahmedabad airplane crash. The agenda was to lay siege to the CM's residence, but police took protesters into preventive custody, herding them into buses from Freedom Park. BY Vijayendra, BJP state president, urged Siddaramaiah to take moral responsibility for the deaths during the stampede and resign. "This event was held to save Siddaramaiah's falling popularity," he said. Leader of the opposition R Ashoka raised slogans against the govt and called it "murderous". He questioned the need for the event even when the police had advised against it. "If there were no deaths during the event, the govt would have taken all the credit. But now, you say it wasn't your event," he said and reiterated that the event went on only after the approval of the CM, deputy CM, and chief secretary. Meanwhile, countering calls for his resignation, Siddaramaiah asked how many BJP functionaries had resigned for similar incidents in the past and dared the saffron party to release a list. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Justifying the govt's action in the wake of the stampede, Siddaramaiah said his govt owned responsibility and suspended senior police officers, including the city commissioner and his own political secretary. "We also commissioned a judicial investigation headed by retired high court judge Justice Micheal D'Cunha," he said. Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Pahalgam terror attack, Siddaramaiah pointed out that the PM did not call for a special session of Parliament to debate the incident in which 26 tourists were killed. "We are accountable to seven crore people of Karnataka and penalised officers for dereliction of duty," Siddaramaiah said. "It is BJP's nature to politicise deaths and tragedies, but we will never get bogged down with their political ploy." Chiding principal opposition party BJP for indulging in politics over dead bodies, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said he was confident Congress will return to form the govt in 2028 as well. "BJP and JD(S) will continue to indulge in politics over dead bodies, but you [media] be with us," he said. Asked whether he intends to take oath in 2028, if the Congress party wins the elections, Shivakumar sidestepped the question and said: "A Congress govt will take oath."
