Wales wing Rees-Zammit returns to rugby with Bristol after NFL dream ends

The 423 days ago
BRISTOL HAVE signed Louis Rees-Zammit following his return to rugby union after the Wales wing gave up on his 18-month-long bid to break into the NFL.
English Premiership side Bristol said Thursday that Rees-Zammit was joining with 'immediate effect' ahead of the new league season. No further details about his contract were disclosed.
The 24-year-old dramatically left rugby union in January 2024 to pursue a career in American football and was on the training squads of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but did not play in a regular-season game.
Earlier this month, Rees-Zammit, who made his name in rugby union with Gloucester, a fierce local rival of Bristol, said he was returning to the 15-a-side code.
He spent last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, having been cut by the Chiefs the previous campaign, but failed to make an NFL appearance for either franchise as a wide receiver after originally switching sports by joining the NFL's International Player Pathway Program in 2024.
By then, he had already scored 14 tries in 32 Tests for Wales and been selected for the 2021 British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa.

Bristol, who reached the Premiership semi-finals last season before losing to eventual champions Bath, are one of the most attacking teams in English rugby's top flight.
Their 95 tries was the joint-highest in the division during the 2024/25 campaign, and Rees-Zammit said their approach made them an 'obvious choice'.
- 'One of the best' -
'The style of rugby the team play — all about entertaining the fans and growing the game — perfectly aligns with how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field,' Rees-Zammit said in a Bristol statement.
'I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall in love with the game. I'm excited to return to rugby at a club that demands those values.'
Bristol's opening match of the new Premiership season is against Leicester on 28 September.
Rees-Zammit made his Gloucester debut soon after turning 18 and went on to score 42 tries in 77 matches for the Cherry and Whites during a six-year stint at Kingsholm.
His first Wales cap came in 2020, aged 19, with his speed and finishing ability making him a rising star of the sport.
Bears boss Pat Lam has no doubt Rees-Zammit, who will join the squad on Saturday, is an ideal fit, saying: 'He has the drive and ambition to be one of the best back-three players in the world, and his goals align perfectly with our ambitions as a club.
'At just 24 years old, we know the athlete and competitor he is. The way we play and the way he wants to play fit seamlessly together, and we're looking forward to working with him.'
Wales' new coach, Steve Tandy, has already said Rees-Zammit could be in contention for a Test recall as soon as the November internationals.

Arsenal capitalise on goalkeeping error to beat Man United

MANCHESTER UNITED'S expensively assembled new forward line drew a blank as Arsenal began their quest for the Premier League title by grinding out a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday. Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal after the Italian defender pounced on a huge mistake by United's stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. United have splashed out £200 million (€232 million) on new forwards to remedy a lack of punch in the final third. Despite promising debuts, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo failed to find the net, while substitute Benjamin Sesko could not make Arsenal pay for opting against pursuing their interest in the Slovenian. After finishing second for the past three seasons, the pressure is on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to deliver the club's first league title in 2003/04. The Spaniard was left to depend on his reliable defence and goalkeeper David Raya to secure a huge three points, as the visitors never got going as an attacking force. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. The new arrivals have at least lifted the mood around Old Trafford, and the majority of the 75,000 fans in attendance could at least leave encouraged by the performance of Ruben Amorim's men. Cunha and Mbeumo unsettled Arsenal's normally unflappable centre-back pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba early on. Advertisement However, United's good work was undone by a glaring error from Bayindir, who was deputising for the injured Andre Onana. The Turkish international meekly flapped at an inswinging Declan Rice corner on 13 minutes, allowing Calafiori the simplest of tasks to head into an unguarded net. Patrick Dorgu came closest to a United reply before half-time with a powerful effort from distance that came back off the post. Mbeumo and Cunha saw tame efforts easily saved by Raya, while the Spaniard did brilliantly to divert another Cunha shot across the face of the goal. Arsenal had held interest in Sesko for well over a year before pursuing a move for Viktor Gyokeres as the solution to their need for a number nine. The Swede had a quiet Premier League debut and was replaced before the hour mark by Kai Havertz. Sesko made his entrance moments later to a hero's welcome after rejecting the advances of Newcastle for the lure of the 20-time English champions. United continued to enjoy the better of the play without finding the finish as Mbeumo saw a powerful header expertly clawed out by Raya. But Arsenal held firm to keep pace with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, who also won on the opening weekend of the campaign. – © AFP 2025

He touched Declan Rice's corner in on the line after Altay Bayindir could only punch the ball goalwards. 6 Riccardo Calafiori scored Arsenal's winner Credit: AFP 6 Gabriel Martinelli did little to show why he should be starting Credit: Getty But he also kept a tight lid on United dangerman Bryan Mbeumo, helping Mikel Arteta's side to a valuable clean sheet. The Gunners took the lead in the 13th minute and were able to hold firm despite the host's pressure. They offered little at the other end of the pitch however with Bukayo Saka not his usual self. Gabriel Martinelli also did little to prove why he deserves a starting role with summer signing Noni Madueke waiting in the wings. Here is how SunSport's Charlie Wyett rated the Arsenal display... DAVID RAYA - 6 Little to do until the 74th minute when he made a big save from Bryan Mbuemo BEN WHITE - 5 Given a real test by Patrick Dorgu, particularly before half-time, and did look a bit rusty - although not the only one. WILLIAM SALIBA - 5 Made things awkward for Bayindir for the goal but at the back he looked seriously ropey. MARTIN ODEGAARD - 5 Needs a much better season than last term when he struggled. Some of his decision-making with the ball was really bad. BUKAYO SAKA - 5 Had a few bright moments in the first half but Luke Shaw did a decent job on him. Could have scored at the end but Matthijs de Ligt delivered a fine block. GABRIEL MARTINELLI -5 Gets a lot of stick from Arsenal fans and this performance really did not help him. Could have no complaints at being taken off. 6 VIKTOR GYOKERES - 6 Put in a shift and did get behind the United defence but he needs to be given much better service. 6 Viktor Gyokeres had an uninspiring debut Credit: Reuters SUBS KAI HAVERTZ (FOR GYOKERES, 60 MINS) - 5 A few nice moments but unable to make a breakthrough. NONI MADUEKE (FOR MARTINELLI, 60 MINS) - 5 Saw little of the ball but could have scored deep into injury time. JURRIEN TIMBER (FOR WHITE, 72 MINS) - 5 First competition game since his ankle operation and did fine. MYLES LEWIS-SKELLY (FOR CALAFIORI, 72 MINS) - 5 Will have been disappointed not to start. MIKEL MERINO (FOR RICE, 83 MINS) - 5 No time to make an impact.
