Arsenal capitalise on goalkeeping error to beat Man United

The 4219 hours ago
MANCHESTER UNITED'S expensively assembled new forward line drew a blank as Arsenal began their quest for the Premier League title by grinding out a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal after the Italian defender pounced on a huge mistake by United's stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.
United have splashed out £200 million (€232 million) on new forwards to remedy a lack of punch in the final third.
Despite promising debuts, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo failed to find the net, while substitute Benjamin Sesko could not make Arsenal pay for opting against pursuing their interest in the Slovenian.
After finishing second for the past three seasons, the pressure is on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to deliver the club's first league title in 2003/04.
The Spaniard was left to depend on his reliable defence and goalkeeper David Raya to secure a huge three points, as the visitors never got going as an attacking force.
Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table.
The new arrivals have at least lifted the mood around Old Trafford, and the majority of the 75,000 fans in attendance could at least leave encouraged by the performance of Ruben Amorim's men.
Cunha and Mbeumo unsettled Arsenal's normally unflappable centre-back pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba early on.

However, United's good work was undone by a glaring error from Bayindir, who was deputising for the injured Andre Onana.
The Turkish international meekly flapped at an inswinging Declan Rice corner on 13 minutes, allowing Calafiori the simplest of tasks to head into an unguarded net.
Patrick Dorgu came closest to a United reply before half-time with a powerful effort from distance that came back off the post.
Mbeumo and Cunha saw tame efforts easily saved by Raya, while the Spaniard did brilliantly to divert another Cunha shot across the face of the goal.
Arsenal had held interest in Sesko for well over a year before pursuing a move for Viktor Gyokeres as the solution to their need for a number nine.
The Swede had a quiet Premier League debut and was replaced before the hour mark by Kai Havertz.
Sesko made his entrance moments later to a hero's welcome after rejecting the advances of Newcastle for the lure of the 20-time English champions.
United continued to enjoy the better of the play without finding the finish as Mbeumo saw a powerful header expertly clawed out by Raya.
But Arsenal held firm to keep pace with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, who also won on the opening weekend of the campaign.

Man arrested over alleged Semenyo abuse is banned from every UK football stadium

A man arrested after a Bournemouth forward reported being racially abused has been banned from every football stadium in the UK. A 47-year-old man from Liverpool has been released on bail after he was arrested the following day on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. As part of his bail conditions, he cannot attend any regulated football match in the UK, and is not allowed within a mile of any football stadium, Merseyside Police said. The force's investigation into the incident is ongoing. Match referee Anthony Taylor stopped play in the 29th minute and a fan was ejected from Anfield. before Liverpool went on to eventually win 4-2. The following day, the 25-year-old Ghanaian international said on social media: "Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together." He thanked his teammates, Liverpool players and fans "who showed their true character", and the Premier League officials "who handled it professionally".

Sky Sports pundit enrages Irish viewers by branding Keith Andrews a ‘new British manager in the Premier League'

One of his two Irish players could be leaving for a Premier League giant MICHAEL Dawson drew the ire of Irish viewers after branding Keith Andrews "British" while previewing his chances of success at Brentford. Prior to Andrews' tenure getting off to a tough start at an away day with Nottingham Forest, Dawson was asked for his take on the match-up featuring the Bees and his former side. 3 Dawson came up through the ranks at Forest before returning for a second stint in 2018 Credit: Getty 3 Andrews was capped 35 times by the Republic of Ireland in his playing days Credit: Alamy Advertisement 3 He was arguably Ireland's standout player at Euro 2012 Credit: Reuters During said preview, he commented that Brentford entrusting Andrews to replace Thomas Frank over a more seasoned candidate was a "new British manager getting an opportunity in the Premier League." It didn't take long for the careless slip-up to generate a bit of backlash. Adam vented: "FYI Michael Dawson: Keith Andrews is Irish, not British! What is it about Sky Sports News getting things like that wrong?" Advertisement Paul was similarly stunned, stating: "Michael Dawson just said with reference to Keith Andrews that it's great to see a 'new British manager getting an opportunity in the Premier League.' Daft in this day and age really." In defence of the British broadcaster, another person did add: "Jaysus calm down, in fairness to Sky, they had the Irish flag after his name on their graphics." And someone else felt it was a storm in a tea cup as they made light of the unfortunate error. Kyle quipped: "We need Clinton Morrison to start calling the likes of Eddie Howe Irish." Advertisement Dubliner Andrews will have more pressing concerns to focus his mind on after Forest's convincing 3-1 win where they were 3-0 up by half-time. There was an ominous sign for the former set-piece coach as the opener after five minutes came through a corner kick. Between Andrews being in charge, Nathan Collins being named captain after Christian Norgaard's departure and Caoimhin Kelleher joining over the summer, Brentford are the main team of Irish interest in this season's Premier League. Republic of Ireland star shares heartwarming moment from his wedding as Jack Grealish is a groomsman But one of that trio could be headed for the exit door before the transfer window closes on September 1. The Daily Mail state that Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are all keeping tabs on Collins. Advertisement The Bees would obviously be highly reticent to sell the Kildare native since their squad has already been raided by United and Arsenal this summer. In the case of The Red Devils they lost their best player as Bryan Mbeumo whilst The Gunners took club captain Norgaard off their hands. FRANK'S A LOT That's not even mentioning ex-boss Thomas Frank jumping at the chance to take over Spurs when that job became available. Collins succeeded the Dane as skipper so being robbed of his services would only entrench Brentford's status as likely relegation candidates. Despite still only being 24, he's already moved around a lot. Advertisement After starting at Stoke City, who he also skippered at 18, he joined Burnley followed by Wolves for one campaign apiece before seeming to find a more long-term home in London. His moves to Wolves and Brentford each set a new Irish transfer fee record so it's not like he's been a cast-off at any of his previous clubs. But joining any of the mooted three he's being linked with at the moment would represent a further step up in class. One thing in depleted Brentford's favour is that he's only two years into a six-year deal so they are in a strong bargaining position.

Ireland international believes Burnley can respond from Tottenham setback

Burnley captain Josh Cullen is confident the Clarets can bounce back from their 'tricky moment' against Tottenham. The Republic of Ireland midfielder was on the receiving end of a 3-0 away drubbing on Saturday. And Cullen is hoping Burnley can regroup from that opening weekend setback and react positively when they host fellow promoted side Sunderland this Saturday. Burnley were 1-0 down at the Tottenham Stadium after 10 minutes when Richarlison opened the scoring before the Brazilian then doubled his tally in the 60th minute. Brennan Johnson swiftly sealed the points six minutes later, to leave the Clarets on the backfoot just one game into a season where they are favourites to go back down. But Cullen said: 'We know we have good mentality as a group. We know we've got that togetherness to stick together and bounce back in tricky moments. 'To go 1-0 down was disappointing but we reacted well. At the end of the day, we've been beaten by a bit of brilliance really to make it 2-0. 'We know there's areas we need to improve, and we can't give players in this league the sort of space we gave them today, for the goals. But there's positives to take and we'll go into this week full of belief and hopefully get our first three points of the season. 'It's a good game to look forward to, back home, and hopefully we can put on a positive performance, keep on making improvements and go again.' But Cullen isn't too down about Saturday's defeat and feels the wake-up call will serve Burnley well. In an interview on the club website, the Ireland international added: 'We've learnt what the Premier League is about. We just need to clean up in both boxes and I think we'll be okay.'
