Basin Bites: Gorditas Don Elver serves up scratch-made Mexican comfort in Midland

Yahoo06-06-2025
MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – In this week's Basin Bites, we visited Gorditas Don Elver, a restaurant in Midland that serves up authentic gorditas that taste like they're from the motherland.
The restaurant has been serving up its signature comfort food for nearly four years, offering a variety of fillings such as asado, chicharrón, mole, and more. But what truly sets Don Elver's apart? Everything is made from scratch, from the slow-cooked meats to the handmade tortillas.
'We decided to open something a little bit different with comfort food, Mexican comfort food, especially for the hard-working men in the oil field,' says Owner Karen Rodriguez. 'You can find something for the little ones; you can find something for the big ones.'
We had the chance to try four of their popular gorditas: chicharrón verde, chicharrón prensado, mole, and chile verde. Each one brought a unique flavor to the table, and every bite was absolutely delicious.
If you have not visited Don Elver's before, do yourself the favor and make the trip; you won't be disappointed.
You can find Gorditas Don Elver at 210 W Longview Ave, Midland, TX. They are open Monday to Saturday from 7 AM to 3 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 3 PM.

Rapper Maluma stops show to call out mother for bringing infant to his Mexico City concert

Colombian rapper Maluma stopped a concert in Mexico City to chastise one of his own fans for bringing her infant to his show and exposing the tyke to high decibel levels. The performer, who is nearing the end of his '+Pretty +Dirty World Tour,' stopped rapping after spotting the fan holding up a baby and dancing. In what's become viral social media video from Palacio de los Deportes over the weekend, Maluma asked the baby's age and was told a year. 'Do you think it's a good idea to bring a baby who's a year old to a concert where the decibels are so f---ing high and the sound is so loud?" Maluma said in Spanish. As Maluma spoke, the crowd booed in potential disapproval of his judgmental statement. "I'd like to know what he's doing here. Next time protect his ears or something," said Maluma, who appeared to win the cheering crowd back to his side when talking about the child's welfare. "It's an act of irresponsibility by you, you're swaying him as if he were a toy, that boy does not want to be there." The artist said he'd never being a his young child, Paris, to a show with this kind of volume. "Truly. I'm telling you with love and with utmost respect, now that I'm a dad," he said. "Me, I wouldn't bring Paris to a concert. So for the next one, be a little more conscious." The tour wraps up with shows on Friday and Saturday in Zapopan, in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

Maluma lectures parent who brought baby to concert: 'I would never'

Maluma went into dad mode at a concert in Mexico City over the weekend. The Colombian sensation took a moment during a show to scold a parent who brought a young child to a loud concert, as seen in social media video. The singer-songwriter clarified the age of the child, who is one year old, before giving the parent a talking to. "Do you think it's a good idea to bring a 1-year-old baby to a concert where the decibels are through the ... roof, where the sound is blasting?" he said in Spanish. "Next time, protect their ears." He continued: "You're swinging him around like he's a toy. That child doesn't want to be here." Maluma, who has a 1-year-old daughter himself with girlfriend Susana Gomez, added that he was looking at the situation from a parent's eyes. Kourtney Kardashian boat trip criticized after son Rocky seen without life vest "I say this with all care and with all respect, since I'm a dad," he said. "I would never have brought a 1-year-old to a concert. So next time, be a bit more mindful, OK?" Maluma, 31, is on a run of Mexican shows for his +Pretty +Dirty world tour through Aug. 16. The tour wraps up in San Salvador on Aug. 23. The rules around kids at shows can vary from promoter to promoter, venue to venue and country to country. Generally speaking, the rules are actually guidelines. The only restrictions might revolve around the age at which a child must show up with a ticket as opposed to going in free. Watch Jennifer Lopez remain calm as cricket crawls up neck mid-concert Palacio de los Deportes, the venue at which Maluma performed, does not appear to have specific rules regarding children. A quick Google search reveals that plenty of parents are seeking guidance on the best way to bring a baby to a concert. Others ask whether the practice is wise. Contributing: Marco della Cava
