UP BJP org rejig: Dalits, OBCs likely to weigh in prominently

Lucknow: OBC and Dalit communities are expected to weigh in prominently as the BJP gears up to reboot its organisational machinery at the ground level by inducting around 90,000 functionaries in over 1,500 out of 1,918 mandals (divisions).
Sources said the party plans to recalibrate 80% of the mandals — a local organisational unit within the party's hierarchical structure — even as the party draws up a broader blueprint of a strategy to counter opposition in the run-up to the 2027 UP assembly polls.
A mandal is a key operational layer in the BJP's grassroots machinery, enabling it to maintain a strong local presence. It is one level below a district and usually corresponds to a group of a few municipal wards or several village panchayats, mainly a sub-division within a district for efficient grassroots-level political and organisational functioning.
According to BJP sources, the party will appoint over 60 functionaries in each of the over 1,500 mandals where the party has already appointed a president. A similar exercise will be undertaken in the remaining over 400 mandals after the appointment of presidents.
The new team is expected to have a sizable presence of OBC, Dalit and women functionaries, a move that could align with BJP's focus on strengthening its grassroots presence and bolstering its social coalition, which catapulted the party to an overwhelming majority in UP in the 2017 and 2022 assembly elections.
The induction of OBC and Dalit functionaries at the grassroots, experts said, could allow the BJP to counter the opposition's Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak (PDA) card, which dented the party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by shrinking its tally from 62 to 33 in UP.
A senior BJP functionary said the induction of a good number of women functionaries at the mandal level is also on the cards. Speculations are rife that women may comprise around 33% of the total functionaries at the mandal level.
Is that happens then it would be a strategic move by the party, which has been prioritising gender inclusivity by ensuring significant representation of women functionaries in the new appointments.
The party also plans to engage the upper caste leadership strategically at the grassroots level as part of its broader organisational revamp. While OBCs and Dalits form the numerical majority and a critical voter bloc, upper castes (like Brahmins, Thakurs, Baniya, and Kayasthas) have traditionally been a core support base for the BJP. The party aims to retain their influence while expanding its appeal to marginalised groups.
In March this year, the party had named 70 new district presidents, of whom 39 were from the upper caste, 25 were OBCs and six Scheduled Caste.

New Delhi: Nominations for the posts of chairperson and deputy chairperson of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi 's pivotal standing committee were filed on Friday. Satya Sharma of BJP submitted her papers for the post of chairperson, while Sunder Singh filed for deputy chairperson. Berlin [Germany], June 6 (ANI): In a key diplomatic engagement, an Indian All-Party Parliamentary Delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad held wide-ranging discussions in Berlin with members of the German Bundestag and representatives from leading think tanks, deepening strategic cooperation and mutual understanding. One of the standout voices during the dialogue was Jurgen Hardt, Member of the German Parliament and Spokesperson for Foreign Policy of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, who strongly addressed regional threats emanating from Pakistan and the need for peaceful conflict resolution. 'We see the terror threat coming from Pakistan and we have asked the Pakistani government to eliminate terror groups in their country. We hope for a peaceful solution. We encourage the Indian government to do it diplomatically. Hopefully, the conflict between India and Pakistan can be calmed,' Hardt stated. Referring to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, he added, 'It was a terrible attack on several people. I hope India finds a way to install a mechanism to resolve such conflicts peacefully, but we understand the necessity of why India took action.' The meeting with German lawmakers, including Armin Laschet, Ralph Brinkhaus, Hubertus Heil, and Omid Nouripour, reaffirmed the growing convergence between India and Germany on regional security and counterterrorism. Berlin [Germany], June 6 (ANI): Christian Echle, Head of the Department of Asia and the Pacific at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, has expressed deep shock and solidarity with India over the Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking to ANI, he praised India's response to the attack, calling it 'well adjusted' and hoped for peaceful ways to resolve the conflict. Echle emphasised that there is a deep solidarity with the Indian people and concern about the potential escalation of violence. He positively interacted with an all-party delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, discussing topics including the Pahalgam terror attack and potential cooperation between India and Germany. 'It was very open and good interaction. We discussed several topics, of course, the recent terrorist attack was a very important and relevant topic. We also talked about the potential for cooperation between India and Germany- how it has grown over the last few years,' said Echle. The delegation's visit is part of India's global outreach following Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam attack, which involved targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said they raised strong concerns about terrorism during their visit to Brussels and generals of Pakistan 'run that country with the help of a military terrorist coalition', which is a 'threat' to democracy and humanity. This diplomatic effort forms part of India's global outreach following Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam by Pakistan-sponsored militants that claimed 26 lives and injured several others. Subsequently, the Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
