Nun arrests row raging, new tension for BJP—VHP wants Rajasthan govt to probe missionaries' ‘black deeds'

The Printa day ago
Speaking to ThePrint, VHP central joint general secretary Surendra Jain called for the establishment of a judicial commission on the lines of the 1954 Niyogi Committee of Madhya Pradesh. Jain, in a warning to the Bhajan Lal Sharma government, said, 'The religious society of Rajasthan cannot tolerate the speed at which missionaries and clerics are converting people. The reaction of society can come with intensity at any time.'
This comes in the backdrop of a political storm within the Opposition and the BJP after the arrests of Sisters Preethi Mary and Vandana Francis, along with a tribal man, on 25 July from Chhattisgarh's Durg station—especially while the BJP attempts to woo the Christian community to make inroads into Kerala.
New Delhi: Walking a tightrope since the arrests of two Keralite nuns in Chhattisgarh after a Bajrang Dal activist's conversion allegations against them, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now facing the heat from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The VHP is currently pressuring the BJP-led Rajasthan government to constitute a judicial commission to 'investigate the black deeds of the Christian missionaries'.
He added, 'Before such a situation arises, the Rajasthan government should immediately bring an anti-conversion law and strictly stop these activities of conversion, love jihad, and jihadi terror and allow the religious-loving Hindu society of Rajasthan an opportunity to live in peace.'
In 1954, the Madhya Pradesh government set up the Niyogi Committee—following the complaints of conversions of tribal Hindus to Christianity—to investigate the activities of the Christian missionaries in the state. The committee report, published in 1956, made several recommendations to regulate conversions. These included taking prior permission for any conversion and prohibiting inducements, such as offers of employment, education, or social services, for conversions.
In Rajasthan's Chittorgarh province earlier this month, district-level officials of the VHP held a two-day meeting. 'Several decisions were taken, including the setting up of a judicial commission. Many people are expressing an apprehension that both the church and the clerics are also found involved in the drug business,' Jain alleged.
He called on the public to contact the VHP members/offices, or the administration, 'if any priest comes to deceive, even in disguise,' to ensure an effective ban on such priests.
Jain said that the Christian missionaries conducted conversions in Rajasthan depending on 'fraud and greed' of the people, and their activities had recently spiked. He said a commission such as the one in Madhya Pradesh could probe the anti-Hindu and anti-national activities of the Christian clerics, making the public aware of their conspiracies in depth, so the people in Rajasthan do not get caught in their traps.
Citing 'examples', Jain claimed, 'In Jhalawar, some priests, who were converting people by luring them with money, were caught recently and also accused of having narcotic drugs. In Bharatpur also, eight priests and 20 nuns were caught converting people lured with Rs 500 and the promise of a monthly salary of Rs 10,000 once they converted.'
In Banswara, a gang—he further said—was caught doing conversions on the promise of Rs one lakh for converting 10 Hindus to Christianity. 'In Neem Ka Thana, the mafia was converting innocent school children, and a government official was also involved … In a case in Ganganagar, the high court had to give orders for action in a case of conversion within three months,' added Jain.
While the organisation demands a judicial commission, VHP central president Alok Kumar met Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma in July this year and demanded an 'anti-conversion law'. The organisation, as a part of its expansion plans, has also decided to establish a VHP unit in every village.

Delete repeat entries in voter list, Coimbatore collector told

Coimbatore: Former minister and Kinathukadavu MLA S Damodaran, along with BJP leader K Vasantharajan, on Friday urged the district administration to verify and remove repeat entries in the latest voter list for the Kinathukadavu assembly constituency. In a joint petition submitted to district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar, they said 11,700 of the 352,598 registered voters in the latest list released for the Kinathukadavu assembly constituency by the election commission appeared to be repeat based on similarities in name, age and names of the relatives. They requested the district administration to verify the suspected duplicate entries and delete confirmed repetitions to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the electoral roll. Bawankule faces flak for sharing stage with accused in Tuljapur drugs case

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: State revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule was embroiled in a controversy after he was felicitated by a man currently out on bail in the Tuljapur drugs case. Critics raised eyebrows, pointing out that Bawankule not only accepted the felicitations at the event on Thursday, but also praised the accused and even put his hand on his shoulder, suggesting a close relationship between the two. Vinod alias Pintu Gangane, the husband of Tuljapur municipal council's former president, got bail in the case a month ago from the Bombay HC bench in Aurangabad. Ambadas Danve, leader of opposition in the legislative council, said the Tuljapur drugs case has been making headlines and probe is still on. "A man who indulged in illicit businesses welcomed and felicitated Bawankule, who is not only the state's revenue minister but also a BJP leader. Bawankule then respectfully brought such a person close. It looks like the minister almost hugged him," he said. BJP workers said the event was organised to mark the approval of the Tuljapur development plan. A BJP office bearer from Sambhajinagar said, "Vinod Gangane has just been named an accused and that too for consumption. He has not been convicted. There is no point in making so much noise about it." State food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal also defended Bawankule. "Senior political functionaries are not aware of all those who are on stage when they go for a public programme. It often happens that citizens want to meet politicians and get photographed. At such times, if the politician stops anyone from sharing the dais, and if that person happens to be a good functionary, it creates problems for the party in electoral politics," Bhujbal said. "The onus is on local party units, who should ensure that people with controversial backgrounds are not allowed on stage," he added. Gangane's name featured as an organiser on the programme's invitation card. Political sources said he shares close ties with local MLA Rana Patil. The Tuljapur drug trafficking case came to light on Feb 14 after the arrest of three people from Tamalwadi village with 45 grams of MD. Police seized synthetic drugs worth Rs 2.5 lakh on Feb 15, uncovering a network spanning Solapur, Naldurg, Pune and Mumbai. A priest from Tuljabhavani temple was among the main peddlers. After the HC rejected his interim bail, Gangane was arrested on June 7 based on the Tamalwadi police's FIR for possession and consumption of MD drugs under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The HC granted him conditional bail on July 10. At the time of seeking bail, his lawyer had argued that Gangane was a consumer and not a drug peddler, and even in the charge sheet, only section 27 of the NDPS Act, which attracts a year's punishment, was invoked against him. Raju Shetti Thanks Anant Ambani and Ambani Family as Elephant "Mahadevi controversy Ends.

States » West Kolhapur Aug 8 ( UNI) Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader and former MP Raju Shetti has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Anant Ambani and the Ambani family following the resolution of the controversy surrounding the elephant Mahadevi, also known as Madhuri. In a video shared publicly, Shetti confirmed that the dispute over Mahadevi has come to an end, owing to a unique and thoughtful solution proposed by Vantara. Recognising the emotional bond that the people of Kolhapur share with Mahadevi and her urgent medical needs, Vantara has proposed the establishment of India's first state-of-the-art satellite rehabilitation centre for elephants near Nandani, close to Kolhapur in Maharashtra. The proposed centre will be equipped with modern facilities and scientific infrastructure to ensure Mahadevi receives the best possible medical care. It aims to respect local sentiments, religious leadership and animal welfare. Welcoming the innovative step, Shetti thanked the Ambani family, especially Anant Ambani, for playing a crucial role in resolving the matter. "Thanks to Anant Ambani's large-heartedness, the dispute regarding Mahadevi has been resolved," said Shetti. He also addressed the previous allegations made by PETA against the caretakers of Mahadevi, claiming neglect and mistreatment. "As members of the Jain community, we live by the principle of 'Live and Let Live'. The accusations were deeply hurtful to us, given our love and compassion for all living beings," said Shetti.
