Tennessee names Joey Aguilar starting quarterback after Nico Iamaleava transfer
Tennessee named transfer Joey Aguilar its starting quarterback on Sunday evening, three months after his arrival from UCLA to replace former Vols starter Nico Iamaleava. Aguilar, a two-year starter at Appalachian State, arrived in Knoxville in mid-May, about a month after Iamaleava's dramatic departure from Tennessee. Iamaleava landed at UCLA, where Aguilar had transferred in the winter. Aguilar re-entered the transfer portal the day after Iamaleava announced his commitment to the Bruins. Advertisement Despite arriving after spring football, Aguilar was considered the favorite to win the starting job at Tennessee because of his experience. Aguilar started 25 games in two seasons at App State and threw for 6,760 yards, 56 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. The other contenders for the job, redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and true freshman George MacIntyre, had a combined nine career pass attempts between them. Merklinger served as Tennessee's third-string quarterback last year; MacIntyre arrived this spring. Aguilar told The Athletic in July that when he initially transferred to the Vols, Tennessee coach Josh Heupel and offensive coordinator Joey Halzle made it clear that Aguilar was guaranteed nothing upon arrival. 'They told me I gotta come in here and compete,' Aguilar said last month. 'They have a good QB room already with George and Jake. I'm not coming in expecting to be the starter right away. Everywhere I've been, I had to earn the right to be the guy.' 'I thought he handled himself extremely well (Friday),' Heupel said. 'I think he's gotten better from Day 1 up until (Friday's) scrimmage, really every single day. The comfort, the control, he's handled himself extremely well during our night walkthroughs, which is mental focus, mental sweat, and because of that, he's extremely comfortable in what we're doing right now.' This will be Aguilar's final year of eligibility, one he was granted after a blanket waiver that was extended to former junior college athletes after Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia sued the NCAA last year. Aguilar spent two seasons at Diablo Valley College near his home in California's Bay Area before getting to App State in 2023. Advertisement The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Aguilar is expected to be a good fit for the Vols' veer-and-shoot style offense. He was No. 60 in The Athletic's College QB Tiers rankings this summer and was 15th among the 16 SEC starters. 'He's got a cannon, so that will fit that offense perfectly, just taking the deep shots and all that,' said a Group of 5 recruiting director whose team faced Aguilar last season. 'He's a better runner than you think. And then he's got a tendency to turn it over a little bit. I think that's just because he's got such a strong arm and trusts it so much.' Tennessee needed a quarterback this spring after Iamaleava, the gem of Tennessee's 2023 recruiting class and the quarterback who helped the Vols to the 2024 College Football Playoff, missed an April practice amid contract talks as his camp sought a raise from the $2.2 million he was scheduled to make in the 2025 season. The Vols balked, and the next day, Heupel confirmed Tennessee was moving on without Iamaleava. Upon transferring to Tennessee, Aguilar agreed to a contract that's expected to pay him around $1.2 million, according to ESPN.
