Brit tourist brutally killed by charging elephant while on safari trip

Daily Mirror6 hours ago
The tragic incident happened while the two frinds were enjoying a sunrise walk to another part of the camp - safari guides tied to shoot the elephant but failed to stop the attack
A British tourist and her friend have been killed by a charging elephant during a 'sunrise safari walk' in Zambia.
At around 6am local time on Thursday July 3 the victims, a 68-year-old and a 67-year-old, were attacked by a female elephant that was with a calf at South Luangwa National Park, Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said.

The two friends had been based at the Big Lagoon Bush Camp and had been enjoying an early morning walk to another part of the camp when the horror incident took place.

Mweemba said: "Two female tourists while taking a safari walk to a crossing point at Luangwa river spotted an elephant with a calf at a distance and diverted about 50m away, but within few minutes after diverting a tea bearer who is usually behind saw the elephant charging at them."
The tea bearer reportedly shouted 'elephants' and as the two women turned around they saw it storming towards them at high speed. In a desperate bid to help the women escape alive the safari guides who were with the group fired shots at the elephant, reports MailOnline.
While the elephant was hit by the gunshots, the guides were unable to prevent the attack and both women died at the scene, police said. The pair 'had spent four peaceful days immersed in nature's embrace. Their journey was meant to continue - but instead, we remember them for their courage, their curiosity, and their love for life's wild places', a local said.
The bodies of the two women have been taken to Mambwe District Hospital for mortuary services, awaiting further details. Their cause of death is yet to be formerly confirmed. According to the South Luangwa National Park website, the region's "concentration of animals is some of the most dense in all of Africa".

The site adds: "You don't have to travel to the most remote areas of the park to see some amazing animal sights. In fact, don't be surprised if a handful of elephants wander in and out of your camp, as they have a habit of making themselves welcome."
This isn't the first time a tourist has been killed by an elephant in Zambia, last year an 80-year-old American woman died and another was injured when an aggressive bull elephant charged at a group on a safari at Kafue National Park in Zambia on Saturday, March 30.
A shocking video taken from one of the people on the truck shows the elephant running along the vehicle as the group was moving. At some point, the vehicle stops, and the elephant can be seen aggressively approaching the truck.
The animal immediately charges at the group lifting the truck with its trunk and turning it over within seconds. A man can be heard yelling "Ey, ey!" apparently trying to scare the animal away until the phone shooting the video seems to fall on the ground and the screen goes black.
The company released a statement acknowledging the incident and said that although the driver was trained and experienced, "terrain and vegetation" were blocking the truck's way and forced the guide to stop.
The Mirror has contacted South Luangwa National Park for comment.

Ex-Wrexham AFC bidder and Chester FC owner dies as tributes paid

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Stephen Vaughan, an ex-bidder for Wrexham AFC and the former owner of Chester City, has passed away. His son, also named Stephen Vaughan, confirmed the news of his father's death in a post on Facebook. In a heartfelt tribute, Vaughan Jr, who himself had a stint as a player and later as an owner at Chester City as well as a director and manager at Bangor City, stated: "Absolutely devastated, the best man I've ever known. RIP Dad our hero". Vaughan Sr's tenure in football was marked by controversy, having acquired Chester in 2001 from American Terry Smith and subsequently guiding the club to promotion back into the Football League in 2004. However, his ownership took a turn for the worse when the Blues plunged into financial turmoil, entering administration with debts amounting to £8 million following their relegation in 2009 – the same year Vaughan became the first owner to fail the Football Association's 'fit and proper person' test. The Vaughan family, led by his son, bought the club out of administration, but issues persisted both on and off the field, culminating in Chester's expulsion from the Football Conference in February 2010 and subsequent dissolution in the High Court a month later, reports the Daily Star. Vaughan was also jailed for 15 months for fracturing a police officer's cheek in a drunken rage, during a disturbance outside his home. His career also spanned boxing promotion, directorship at rugby league club Widnes Vikings, and chairmanship at Barrow. His family was also involved with Bangor FC. He was also part of a consortium that tried to take over Wrexham football club back in 2011. He bought Maltese club Floriana in April 2012 with his son, who captained Chester during his father's ownership and was appointed president soon after. The Vaughan family ended its association with Floriana in February 2014 but continued to have an involvement in Maltese football as sponsors of Mosta and Hibernians. His son's Facebook post was filled with tributes from friends and family, with many simply posting "RIP" and broken heart emojis, while another said: "So sorry to hear this sad news Ste, condolences to you and the family". A second added: "Condolences to the family Ste! What a gent your dad was!" And a third said: "So sorry to hear this awful news about your Dad RIP. Sending my deepest sympathy and condolences and prayers to you and all your beautiful family." Boxer Derry Matthews also paid tribute to him, and said: "They say he only takes the best and he's taking one of the greatest men ever, my first ever manager who got George out of retirement to train me, thank you for everything Ste. "People in the boxing world are going miss you, no one could do a prep talk before a fight like you, you would have me wanting to walk through walls and with you by my side in changing rooms we could beat anyone. "Gutted for my mate @stephen_vaughan_85, Pat and all the family on the loss." Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox Find out what's happening near you

Top football agent denies rape and trafficking amid US lawsuit

Jonathan Barnett, who retired early last year having represented some of British football's biggest stars, vehemently denies allegations made in a claim to a California court and says they have no basis in reality Jonathan Barnett has been accused of sex trafficking and rape in a civil case in the US. The former sports agent, who strenuously denies the allegations, is claimed to have trafficked a woman from Australia to London in the summer of 2017 after making initial contact on LinkedIn. According to court documents, submitted in California and seen by Mirror Football, Barnett, 75, allegedly used the woman as 'a sex slave' for a number of years and left her with 'a chronic injury that will last her entire lifetime.' ‌ The claim is calling for Barnett, who represented some of British football's biggest names before retiring suddenly in March last year, and the ICM Stellar agency to stand trial in front of a jury in a civil court for a range of allegations that fall under the American Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorisation Act. ‌ In a statement Barnett said: 'The claims made in today's complaint against me have no basis in reality and are untrue. We will vigorously defend this lawsuit through the appropriate legal process. I am looking forward to being entirely vindicated and exonerated.' Stellar are included in the claim because they allegedly 'knowingly conspired, aided and abetted, and facilitated Barnett's sex trafficking venture through actions that occurred in the state of California.' The agency did not respond to a request for comment. Barnett is accused of telling the woman she must only refer to him as 'My Master' while overseeing alleged abuse that left the complainant 'tortured, injured, raped, and violently assaulted.' The 63-page complaint includes graphic descriptions of alleged incidents involving urine and faeces. It claims she was instructed to behave like a dog, would be handcuffed and forced to wear a tight collar, and 'her skin was often infected from the cuts, welts and bleeding' caused by physical abuse.

Celebrities rally in support for Cassie Ventura after Diddy's verdict

Kesha and many other celebrities have rallied in support of Cassie Ventura as her former boss and ex-boyfriend Sean Diddy Combs received a not guilty verdict after she testified against him American rapper-turned-mogul, Sean 'Diddy' Combs has been convicted on two charges of transportation for prostitution of former employee and ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura and another, unnamed woman, after a highly-publicised eight-week trial. The Bad Boy record label exec was acquitted of three more severe charges faced, including two counts of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. ‌ Cassie Ventura accused Diddy of sexual assault and abuse in November 2023, before further details emerged of an alleged sex trafficking operation the 55-year-old rapper headed. ‌ Thirty-eight-year-old Cassie detailed horrific abuse she allegedly faced at the hands of her former boss, such as being forced to take part in drug-fuelled orgies that Combs infamously dubbed 'freak-offs," as well as physical abuse. The court was shown CCTV footage, from 2016, of Diddy violently attacking Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel hallway. Despite this and other evidence presented by the prosecution team, Combs evaded the lengthier charges. A number of celebrities, some of whom are abuse survivors themselves, have come forward in support of Ms Ventura following the verdict. Kesha Kesha expressed her support for Cassie on social media, posting on X: 'Cassie, I believe you. I love you. Your strength is a beacon for every survivor.' Kesha fought for the termination of her contract with him, alleging he had "sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abused," her "to the point where [she] nearly lost her life". Gottwald has always denied the claims, and, in 2023, a settlement was reached between the pair. ‌ Rosie O'Donnell 'I guess a jury just never wants to believe that a woman stays because of power and coercion," comedian Rosie O'Donnell shared on Instagram following the Diddy verdict. She added: "Wow - they just think women stay because what? Money - fame - 'they love the abuse' - what a f****** joke - this decision got me angry #cassie." Evan Rachel Wood Elsewhere, actress Evan Rachel Wood, who accused her former partner Marilyn Manson of grooming and sexual abuse in 2021, which he denies, voiced her support for Cassie, too. ‌ 'There is no consent in a domestic violence relationship. Period,' she wrote. 'Once the threat of violence is there, you comply. You do not consent. It is self-preservation and survival. It is not freely or willingly given. It is forced and coerced out of you. We clearly have a long way to go in our understanding of this.' Aubrey O'Day Aubrey O'Day is a former member of Danity Kane, a group signed to Diddy's Bad Boy Records label. She has claimed she was fired from this role because she refused to do things "in other areas," under Combs' management. She too posted her support of Cassie. 'The cultural weight of this decision is immeasurable. It is heartbreaking to witness how many lives have been impacted by their experiences with Sean Combs - only for those stories to fall short in the eyes of a jury. ‌ "I can only hope these jurors never have to watch someone they love endure what so many survivors have described. My heart is with Cassie. A woman who could've had a life and career free of fear and control. A woman who told her truth in a courtroom, only to have the world dissect her credibility instead of her courage. 'Let's be clear: the courtroom operates by the law, but that DOES NOT mean it delivers justice.'
