Joni Mitchell streams surge after Amanda Seyfried's viral ‘California' cover on Jimmy Fallon

Independent20-03-2025

Amanda Seyfried 's viral cover of 'California' by Joni Mitchell has sparked a huge surge in streams for the revered singer-songwriter.
Seyfried appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this month, where she revealed that she taught herself how to play the dulcimer during the pandemic.
To demonstrate, she delivered a note-perfect rendition of the 1971 song from Mitchell's album Blue, much of which was composed on the dulcimer.
'What are you talking about?' a stunned Fallon exclaimed, while the audience gave Seyfried a rapturous round of applause.
The performance quickly went viral and even led to speculation that Seyfried was throwing her name into the ring to play Mitchell in Cameron Crowe 's forthcoming biopic.
The actor insisted that it was not an audition as she said she was 'very much aged out' of playing a young Mitchell.
Still, her rendition clearly hit all the right notes, as Billboard r eports, via entertainment data platform Luminate, that streams of 'California' surged by 794 per cent – from 100,000 streams to just over one million – after the late-night clip aired.
The surge was aided in part by the clip doing the rounds on TikTok, which has previously aided artists including Fleetwood Mac and Kate Bush in finding new generations of fans.
Almost Famous director Crowe announced that he was working with Mitchell on a film based on her life and career back in 2023.
It has not yet been revealed who will portray the legendary artist as a young woman. Meryl Streep is reported set to play the 'Big Yellow Taxi' singer in her later years.
'I'm super-excited. We're going to start it by the end of this year and hopefully have it done for Christmas next year,' Crowe told Ultimate Classic Rock in December 2024.
'It's Joni's life, not through anybody else's prism. It's through her prism. It's the characters who impacted her life that you know and a lot that you don't know. And the music is so cinematic,' he added.
The yet-to-be titled biopic is currently being lined up for a 2025 Christmas release date.
Seyfried's performance arrived after Mitchell made a rare public appearance in January to help raise funds towards rebuilding efforts in California, following the devastating wildfires that destroyed thousands of homes and businesses.
The singer, 81, sang 'Both Sides, Now' from her 1969 album Clouds at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on 30 January.

Rod Stewart, 80, is supported by pregnant daughter Kimberly, 45, and lookalike son Sean, 44, as he's seen for the first time since being left 'devastated' after cancelling SIX shows due to ill health

Sir was seen for the first time since being left 'devastated' after cancelling six shows due to ill health while stepping out in Beverly Hills, just weeks ahead of his planned Glastonbury performance. The Maggie May hitmaker, 80, was supported by daughter Kimberly, 45, and lookalike son Sean, 44, as they headed for dinner at swanky restaurant Matsuhisa. Rod, who put on a brave face and flashed a smile despite still recovering from flu, wore a black velvet jacket with gold trim which he teamed with jeans and a white shirt. Shielding his eyes behind shades the rocker accessorised with a quirky necklace as he arrived in a chauffeur-driven car. Meanwhile Kimberly, who is expecting her child, showcased her blossoming bump in a black mini dress which she wore with a chic blazer and boots. Although she has not revealed the identify of her baby-to-be's father, the model already shares a 13-year-old daughter, named Delilah, with her ex Benicio Del Toro. Her brother Sean, 44, cut a causal figure in a white T-shirt as the siblings were on hand to support their beloved father amid his health woes. Rod shares eight children with five mothers. He is a father to four daughters Sarah, 61, Kimberly, Ruby, 37, and Renee, 33 and four sons Sean, Liam, 30, and Alastair Wallace, 19, and Aiden Patrick, 14, whom he shares with wife Penny. It comes after the iconinc singer took to Instagram to announce he'd been forced to cancel another six US shows after already axing two gigs in Las Vegas earlier this week on doctor's orders. He wrote in a statement: 'I have to cancel and reschedule my next six concerts in June as I continue to recover from the flu,' 'So sorry my friends. I'm devastated and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience to my fans. I'll be back on stage and will see you soon.' He also listed the four shows he was cancelling in Las Vegas and Stateline, Nevada, as well as two he plans to reschedule in California. On Thursday Sir Rod was due to take to the stage at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, only to cancel the show 24-hours before .The hitmaker hasn't as of yet confirmed a new date. Posting an Instagram statement on Wednesday, he wrote: 'I'm awfully sorry to have to cancel my show June 5th at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. 'My doctor ordered a bit more rest while I recover from the flu. Thanks for your love and understanding.' Rod was also forced to reschedule his residency gig days earlier on Monday, with a new date set for June 10. He said in a social media statement: 'I am sorry to inform you that I'm not feeling well and my show tonight at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is being rescheduled to June 10. Your tickets will be valid for the new date.' The latest set back comes just weeks of the crooner's planned Sunday afternoon legends slot at Glastonbury Festival in Somerset on June 29. He was put on vocal rest amid his mammoth One Last Time Tour, and last month seen with a sign around his neck informing anyone he came into contact with that he could not speak after his concert at Milan's Unipol Forum. It read: 'Sorry. Cannot talk. Having vocal rest.' He returned to the stage at the MEO Arena in Lisbon, Portugal, three days later on May 13. The music veteran will be done with 'large-scale world tours' once he finishes this year's shows in Europe and North America. However, he has no plans to retire. The 'You Wear It Well' singer wrote on Instagram: 'This will be the end of large-scale world tours for me, but I have no desire to retire. 'I love what I do, and I do what I love. 'I'm fit, have a full head of hair, and can run 100 metres in 18 seconds at the jolly old age of 79. 'I'd like to move onto a Great American Songbook, Swing Fever tour the year after next – smaller venues and more intimacy. But then again, I may not...' It comes as Sir Rod is planning a mini-reunion with his band Faces when he takes to the stage at Glastonbury. Ronnie Wood, who is a close friend of the Hot Legs hitmaker and performed alongside him in the 70s, is heading to Worthy Farm for a performance. Rod himself shared the news during an interview on The Peter Crouch podcast, after he was asked whether he's kept in touch with the Rolling Stones or Sir Elton John. He replied: 'Not really, but Woody and I do a lot just recently because we are going to do Glastonbury together.' Rod was also forced to reschedule his residency gig days earlier on Monday, with a new date set for June 10 When asked why they lost touch, Rod said it was because Ronnie and Elton had quit booze, saying: 'I think they stay away from me.' Rod was tight-lipped when asked whether Faces drummer Kenney Jones will be joining them on-stage. However, the music legend confirmed in November that he had reunited with his Faces bandmates for a new album. Speaking on the Soccer A-Z podcast, Rod said: 'I'm meeting up with the last two members of the Faces tomorrow, and we're working on a documentary, because next year will be our 50th anniversary, or 60s. 'I don't know what it is, but when the faces were together, and we're trying to put out an album. So I shall be with Mr. Woods and Mr. Jones.' Rod and Ronnie have been friends since 1969 when they were both members of rock group Faces. Although the band parted ways in 1975, the pair kept in touch, with Rod serving as best man to Ronnie's wedding to Sally in 2012.

Call of Duty 2026 has been announced and it's back-to-back Black Ops

For the first time in the history of the Call of Duty series, we'll be getting two consecutive entries in a sub-series, as Black Ops 7 has been announced for release in 2026 In a groundbreaking move for the Call of Duty franchise, Activision has revealed that for the first time, we'll see back-to-back annual releases of Black Ops. Activision has unveiled its plans for Call of Duty 2026, and to everyone's astonishment, it's Black Ops 7. The publisher usually rotates its studios between different series – with Black Ops and Modern Warfare being the focus for the past few years alongside Warzone battle royale – and typically releases them every other year. ‌ Despite last year's release being Black Ops 6, which would normally mean a hiatus until 2027, Activision has decided to buck the trend. ‌ The announcement of Black Ops 7 was made at SGF 2025 during the Xbox Games Showcase, and this time around, the game is set to catapult players into the future, specifically to the year 2035, which is 40 years on from the events of Black Ops 6. It's been quite some time since gamers have had the chance to engage with futuristic warfare technology; the last occasions were in Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4, set in 2065 and the 2040s respectively. In a press statement detailing the backdrop of Black Ops 7, Activision stated, "The year is 2035 and the world is on the brink of chaos, ravaged by violent conflict and psychological warfare following the events of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6. Wielding cutting-edge technology, David Mason and his team must fight back against a manipulative enemy who weaponizes fear above all else." Regarding the successive Black Ops releases, Call of Duty general manager Matt Cox said, "The Black Ops universe is amazing. The creativity and imagination that goes into the storytelling, the rich character depth, and the incredible moment-to-moment gameplay across all modes is really exceptional. As a team, our vision from the start was to create a back-to-back series experience for our players that embraced the uniqueness of the Black Ops sub-franchise." Tyler Bahl, head of Activision publishing marketing, also chimed in adding, "Delivering consecutive Black Ops games also allows our teams the tremendous opportunity to tap not only into our own creativity but also embrace the shift from a '90s setting to the new 2035 future setting within our marketing. "Today is only the beginning with this first teaser. The full reveal of Black Ops 7 is coming later this summer, so the community should be on the lookout for teases, clues and the surprises that the Black Ops series is known for. It's an exciting time as we prepare for a new Call of Duty reveal, and the next great experience to come." Black Ops 7 is slated for release on both current and previous generation consoles later this year and will debut as a day one Xbox Game Pass title.
