Alexander Isak given Liverpool transfer ultimatum after 'not in control' admission

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Newcastle United kicked off their Premier League campaign with a goalless draw at Aston Villa, with wantaway striker Alexander Isak, desperate to join Liverpool, conspicuous by his absence
Eddie Howe admits Alexander Isak's future is up to the wantaway Newcastle striker. The Toon felt the absence of Isak, who is desperate to join Liverpool, in their Premier League curtain-raiser at Aston Villa as they were held to a goalless draw against 10 men.

Isak was left out by Howe as the Sweden international tries to force a move away from St James' Park, with Liverpool seeing a bid rejected earlier in the summer. Howe reiterated his stance that the door remains open for Isak to be reintegrated into the squad if he wants to be but knows only the player is in control.

'I'm certainly not in control of that," Howe said. "And I think there's only one person really that could control that. Nothing's changed. But he has to decide what he wants to do.

'I mean, that's the quickest way. But of course, Alex is in control of what he does. I'm not in control of him. I hope it's resolved quickly, because it's news around us all the time. Players have managed to shut that out and perform. We have to continue to do that. We have to cope without the narrative against us.'
Howe refused to speculate on whether the Magpies would have beaten Villa with Isak in the team, having failed to score when playing against 10 men for over half-an-hour.
'I don't think it's the narrative we want to go down, because it's easy to say, but you've got no way of knowing if that's the case,' he said. 'Of course, you're going to miss someone that scored the goals that Alex has, and not just the goals, but the calibre of player that he is.
'So we're not silly enough to think any different, but we just have to look and talk about the players that are here and what they've given today. It's very easy for the players to have a feeling of negativity going into the game or an excuse they're ready, but there was no sign of that in our performance.'
The draw meant Villa will now go more than a calendar year without home defeat in the Premier League. They were in the ascendency when Ezri Konsa was dismissed for hauling down Anthony Gordon when the Newcastle forward was through on goal. But they held firm with 10 men and never really looked like conceding.
'We are not happy when we are losing two points at home,' boss Unai Emery said. 'But after the red card we have to feel confident for the next matches.
'Today was a very good test. This is the level we are going to face this year in the Premier League and Europa League.'

Jadon Sancho rejects two transfer offers to leave Manchester United

Jadon Sancho has rejected two offers to leave Manchester United despite his presence in Ruben Amorim's bomb squad. Sancho was left out of United's matchday squad for their Premier League opener against Arsenal on Sunday. Having been stripped of the No. 25 shirt last summer, Sancho did not even have a number next to his name in the Manchester United programme. It was Amorim's predecessor Erik ten Hag who sent Sancho on loan to Chelsea last season but the Portuguese boss has also decided to cut ties with the ex-England winger. Sancho was told to find a new club this summer and placed in Amorim's bomb squad along with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Despite knowing his United career is over, Sancho is yet to receive an offer he deems suitable, rejecting approaches from Roma and Besiktas. New favourite to be first Premier League manager sacked as odds slashed

It was a bruising opening weekend of the Premier League season for a number of teams and one manager already appears to be under a lot of pressure. The heaviest defeat of the weekend was for Wolves as they were thrashed 4-0 at home by Manchester City, as Pep Guardiola's team suggested they will be a force once again. However, it was West Ham's 3-0 loss at Sunderland that really caught the eye as the newly promoted side swept aside the Hammers. It was a nightmare start to the campaign for West Ham boss Graham Potter and the bookmakers have already installed him as the new favourite to be the next manager to leave their post in the top flight. These things can and do change very quickly as before a ball was kicked this season it was Leeds boss Daniel Farke who was favourite in this market. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The Yorkshire club get their season underway on Monday night against Everton and if they were to lose heavily then Farke may well reclaim the shortest odds on offer. For now, though, it is Potter who is under most pressure thanks to the three second half goals at the Stadium of Light which sent the Hammers back to London with their tails between their legs. Speaking to Sky Sports of the shock heavy defeat, Potter said: 'Very disappointing. The second half was not good from us in terms of the basics. 'First half was quite good, we controlled the crowd and were unfortunate not to score. The first goal was always going to be important. Basics of football we have to really improve. 'It is the first day, we know these things can happen as much as we don't like it to happen. We have a big game on Friday, we have to react and do a lot better.' It has been a very difficult summer for the Bees as former boss Thomas Frank left for Tottenham, star striker Bryan Mbeumo was sold to Manchester United and captain Christian Norgaard moved to Arsenal. Yoane Wissa was also not involved at the City Ground on Sunday as he continues to be linked with a move to Newcastle. Andrews is in his first job as a manger and it is a tough one after the losses the club has suffered. 'It was always going to be difficult but we made it harder for ourselves,' the Irishman said after defeat at Forest. 'We knew their strengths and we knew the problems they would cause. Set-pieces were always going to be a threat. More Trending 'Get back to basics. Basics in the game is a dirty word at times, but you have to have an edge and do the ugly side of the game and compete as a team. I didn't think we did that. 'I saw it a lot in the first half and it's something we need to address. The second half was a lot better on a lot of fronts.' West Ham and Brentford have the chance to improve their early-season fortunes in front of their home fans this weekend. The Hammers host Chelsea on Friday night while the Bees play Aston Villa at 3pm on Saturday. Rasmus Hojlund offered surprise option for Man United exit

Fulham sounded out Manchester United over a potential move for Rasmus Hojlund due to the possibility of Rodrigo Muniz leaving the Whites this summer. The Brazilian forward has been expected to go to Atalanta in a £40m deal, although it is understood that a move to Serie A ran into difficulties by Sunday evening. Fulham have nevertheless explored alternatives, should the move be reignited, with Hojlund considered as an option to replace the Brazilian's firepower. The 24-year-old struck a 97th-minute equaliser for Marco Silva's side at the Amex to deny Brighton all three points and secure a draw to kick-start their Premier League campaign. The former Flamengo forward has scored 17 Premier League goals in his last two campaigns for Fulham, hitting double figures in all competitions, with a career-high of 11 goals last term. United want to sell the Dane after signing Benjamin Sesko in an €80m (£73.7m) deal. Hojlund's preference is to stay, but he is naturally prepared to consider prospective offers. United want £40m for the 22-year-old, although it is felt they would rather do a deal abroad. Hojlund was left out of the squad that lost 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday at Old Trafford. The Dane was left on the bench for the final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina on 9 August, despite Sesko not registering in time to feature against the Italians. Hojlund cost £72m two years ago from Atalanta and has scored 14 goals in 62 league games since returning nine goals in 32 Series A matches.
