The Virginia has been entertaining Somerset since 1920s
The Virginia has been entertaining Somerset since the 1920s. As expected, the historic venue has changed since the doors first opened.
It opened in 1922 as a local movie theater and for more than 70 years became part of the city's fondest memories. But the family-owned business fell on hard times, sitting vacant and deteriorating for nearly three decades.
In 1994, The Virginia closed after an ice storm caused its roof to collapse.

Several years ago, Somerset bought the property from the city's downtown development corporation, spending $2.3 million to bring the theater back to life ahead of its 100th anniversary. The historic space is now more than a cinema, renovated into a multi-use venue.
'The Virginia Theater, what I like to call the artist formerly known as the Virginia Cinema, was one of the movie theaters located in downtown Somerset. One of the others was the Kentucky, which is now a parking lot. That was one of the main reasons why this community really banded together to try to refurbish this theater was to not let it become a parking lot and to let it be a part of the rich history of this community,' said John Alexander, the Pulaski County government's communications director.
Last month, it hosted the 606-strong tornado relief benefit concert to raise money for storm survivors of May's horrific tornado that damaged parts of the area.
Alexander is proud to have an iconic piece of the city back in play. He said if the lake is the city's lifeblood, then The Virginia is its heart.

'The community was very welcoming of it. I like to use the quote that Humphrey Bogart used in The Maltese Falcon: it's 'the stuff that dreams are made of.' This has been our dream for decades and to have it back open, to have it accessible to the public, and to be in a form that it's never been in before and to have a building that is modern, that does have modern sensibilities, then also a throwback to the past,' Alexander said.
Alexander also hosts a classic movie series at the theater once a month.
'To me, it's a chance again to show people Somerset that when they visit here, when they visit the lake, when they visit this area, that it's something that they can come see that's modern but then also looks towards the past as well,' said Alexander. 'They can't stay on the lake 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So, to have things like this in downtown Somerset for people to go do outside of the lake and outside of that regular Memorial Day to Labor Day lake season is something that benefits everybody.'
Friday night, the band Who's Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience is performing at the Virginia. The show starts at 8 p.m. For a list of other shows and events, click here.

Netflix Viewers Warning Each Other About "Disturbing" Series
Netflix tends to have a diverse content library with a little something for everyone. However, some Netflix viewers seem to be thrown off by one sci-fi series offered by the streamer. While the series has received praise from some viewers, others aren't sure what to make of the story, even going so far as to call the content 'disturbing.' The series, which comes from David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, is the third streaming adaptation of a popular Chinese novel series. This particular variation, from the showrunners behind the HBO series Game of Thrones , marked their first new television series since that iconic fantasy show came to an end. And while fans are still waiting for the second and third seasons to come out, some tweets have resurfaced bringing attention back to their science-fiction endeavor. The first season of the sci-fi series was released via Netflix in 2024. Just two months after its release, it was renewed for an additional two seasons, which have yet to be released at the time of this writing. Hopefully, however, fans will find just as much to enjoy as they did the first season – even if the subject matter is disturbing for some viewers. Here are some of the reactions to the series which gained traction on the social media platform X: 3 Body Problem on Netflix was a fun and disturbing watch. I might have to jump into the books to know how this all ends. — Stein (@steinekin) March 26, 2024 The sequence where they slice and dice the entire ship in 3 Body Problem is absolutely brutal. Also, Eiza Gonzalez is an absolute smoke show. — PopeHat 'n Vestments Inc.⭐️ (@PontifHat) August 20, 2025 Many days I just go back to the 3 Body Problem TV show's ending and rewatch it. Inspirational and banging music by Ramin Djawadi. Bugs. — Nakul (@naku1s) August 20, 2025 A year late getting into 3 Body Problem, but we're here. Moral sci-fi conundrums aplenty, will be spiraling soon. — Cul-de-sac Black (@itsKingRaa) August 20, 2025 3 Body Problem makes me feel like a genius and an idiot at the same time — Vitty_vibes (@vittyviibes) July 31, 2025 The series, titled 3 Body Problem , is based on the Chinese novel series Remembrance of Earth's Past by Liu Cixin. The first volume of this novel series was titled The Three-Body Problem and itself was named after a classical physics problem which revolved around Newton's laws of motion and gravitation. This unique concept is felt throughout the series which revolves around an astrophysicist named Dr. Ye Wenjie played by Rosalind Chao and Zine Tseng. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the series 3 Body Problem and any other trending Netflix streaming titles as we have them. For now, subscribers can check out 3 Body Problem ahead of the eventual release dates of its second and third seasons.

Exclusive: Ronnie 2K talks SGA as NBA 2K26 cover athlete, 98 overall rating, Thunder, more
In the middle of the driest part of the NBA calendar, NBA 2K has taken advantage of the lack of a news cycle. They slowly rolled out their top 100 overall-rated players for the upcoming Sept. 5 release date of NBA 2K26. This year's video game edition has plenty of Oklahoma City Thunder representation. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the NBA 2K26 cover athlete. They also have five players among the top 100. That shouldn't be a surprise. After all, they had one of the greatest seasons ever with a historic 68-14 regular-season record and a Larry O'Brien trophy. At the top is Gilgeous-Alexander. After he brought home the MVP and NBA Finals MVP, he's tied with Nikola Jokic for the highest-rated player at 98 overall. That's fair, as both players have finished top two in MVP voting for the last two seasons. To reflect on Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder and NBA 2K26, Ronnie Singh — better known as Ronnie 2K — talked to Thunder Wire. Here is that interview, which was lightly edited for clarity and brevity: On making Gilgeous-Alexander the 2K26 cover athlete "Yeah, I mean, what a no-brainer in a lot of ways. Looking back now, obviously coming off a massively successful season, leading the league in points, putting out numbers across the board, winning an MVP and winning a championship. And then having celebrated this championship massively over the course of the offseason. "I mean, there is no bigger story than Shai and what a partner. When we talked last year, I was saying, 'That's a guy that's on a very short list of covers.' I think I even said, like, 'He will definitely be a cover star at some point in the course of his career.' "If I had told you it was going to be the very next year, I don't know. But I'm so excited for Shai, for all the success, obviously, beyond 2K. The big story is the Thunder with us and a lot of the guys that are highly rated. Shai really is top of the list, in the news cycle, and being a great partner for us for 2K26." On if Gilgeous-Alexander campaigned for himself to be the 2K cover athlete "I think he's been campaigning for a cover for three years. I mean, even before he was a 90-rated player in our game, I think he saw the trajectory. That campaign obviously continued. But I mean, ultimately it starts with the work on the court and like the performance. By Christmas time, it was clear that he was head and shoulders above the rest of the league in terms of our consideration. "It became obvious that it was time to coordinate him. He is such a big fan. He will remind me all the time about his play in the park, wanting to do this, wanting to be a big part of it, wanting to work on all the elements in the game. "He's got his handprints all over 2K26. I'm happy to discuss that. But really, just what a great partner to be on our cover, especially with all the success he had this past year." On Gilgeous-Alexander being in the 98 overall club with Jokic "I mean the magnitude of his numbers. It's not even just obviously the offensive ones. You know, he is a 98, which is right behind Jokic. He's the top 10 in mid-range at No. 5 with a 97, but people kinda sleep on his defensive abilities. "He's right there at 10th on an over-90 steal rating. He is just kinda a force of nature on both sides of the court. That's what the rating is really gonna take into play. Like all these combinations of mini-ratings add up to this big number. "He's just playing at an all-world level. I'm sure now, knowing him the way that I do, he's somehow made a chip on his shoulder to get to it at a 99 rating. I would not put him past it. This guy started at a 74 in his first year and has grown so remarkably and incrementally. Every single season has been pretty remarkable." On the Thunder having 5 representatives in the top 100 rated players "I mean, the level of talent is pretty insane. There are a couple of guys on that team that would start anywhere else, like Isaiah Joe. I feel like he would be a starter anywhere else, and he's barely cracking 20 minutes. They just have a really strong team. They have a great front office. I don't need to speak about this because it's obviously well-documented. They're set up for long-term success. They got a great No. 2 in J-Dub. He is an amazing player as well. So yeah, they're a lot of fun to watch, and they're going to be fun for a long time." On Jalen Williams having a 90 overall rating and his playoff performance "I don't know if his playoff run contributed dramatically. I think that just actually probably put him in the eyeballs of more casual NBA fans. That it wasn't just the Shai Show. That he had his Robin to his Batman. J-Dub has been a very good player for a long time. Shai didn't have very many poor games, but whenever there was a game where he wasn't his total automatic 30-point standard, J-Dub was right there. It's going to be amazing to watch. These guys are so young, and it's going to be so much fun to watch them. The upside for J-Dub being a 90 and being able to go up from there is pretty well known." On Isaiah Joe having the 5th-best 3-point shot in NBA 2K26 "His per-36 numbers were behind only Steph Curry in the entire league. If he received the minutes, his volume would be nuts. He shot it at a high clip. That guy comes in, and he makes buckets from distance when needed. I think he's the type of guy who would start on pretty much any other squad in the league. But on this very-deep Thunder team, he's relegated to a rotation role, but a very, very important one. "He's so young, too. So, like, it's going to be remarkable to see how he fits into their long-term plans. At some point, it's obviously well documented, salary cap starts factoring in. But they're a lot of fun, and they've got a lot of really good players." On the Thunder's defense and depth "They're kinda the ultimate 2K team. I mean, they got a guy who protects the rim in Chet. They got a guy that can come in and shoot threes when you're behind or when you want to create some separation. They got four or five guys that are total ball-hawks. I think they have four or five guys in the top 10 in steals. If I'm not mistaken, three of those top 10 are the highest steal-rated guys in the league. "They kinda do it all. They're going to be hard to figure out. I don't know which team will put together all the answers to beat the Thunder four out of seven times this upcoming year. They have to be the prohibitive favorite again."

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has NBA 2K26's 2nd-highest rating at 98 overall
The NBA has gone on vacation, which means NBA 2K has taken advantage of the lack of news cycle. In anticipation of the NBA 2K26 Sept. 5 release, the annual video game slowly rolled out the top 100 rated players. It's a tradition that sparks conversations as fans across the league argue their guy should be higher. After winning an NBA championship, the Oklahoma City Thunder are prominently featured in the list. They have five players among the top 100. That shouldn't be a surprise. After all, they had one of the greatest seasons ever with a historic 68-14 regular-season record and a Larry O'Brien trophy. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had one of the greatest individual seasons ever seen. He won about every award imaginable. From MVP to NBA Finals MVP. After capturing a championship, the accolades piled on into the summer. One was being the NBA 2K26 cover athlete. Now, we know what his rating will be. Gilgeous-Alexander has the second-highest NBA 2K26 rating at 98 overall. Nikola Jokic also has a 98 overall rating to round out the top two players. The Thunder have five players in the top 100. That's expected for a team widely viewed as the title favorite for the upcoming season, as they run it back with the same roster.
