PM Modi, French President Macron Discuss Ukraine, Other Conflicts
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday exchanged views on efforts for peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and in West Asia.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, "Had a very good conversation with my friend President Macron. Exchanged views on efforts for peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and in West Asia."
"Reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthen the India-France strategic partnership," the post added.

In response, Macron shared a post on X, saying, "I have just spoken with Prime Minister @NarendraModi. We coordinated our positions on the war in Ukraine in order to move towards a just and lasting peace, with strong guarantees for Ukraine and Europe's security."
"On trade issues, we agreed to strengthen our economic exchanges and our strategic partnership in all areas; this is the key to our sovereignty and independence," the post added.
Mentioning the AI Action Summit held in Paris last February, Macron wrote, "Following up on the AI Action Summit held in Paris last February, we are working towards the success of the AI Impact Summit to be held in New Delhi in 2026. For more effective multilateralism, we agreed to work closely together in preparation for the French presidency of the G7 and the Indian presidency of the BRICS in 2026."

In February, PM Modi visited France for three days, where he participated in various programmes related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), commerce, energy, and cultural linkages. He also co-chaired the AI Action Summit, a gathering of world leaders and global tech CEOs.
Following PM Modi's visit to France, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that India-France relations have reached new heights, as PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron held high-level discussions aboard the French presidential aircraft.
The joint statement released after PM Modi's visit to France said the two leaders reiterated their call for reformed and effective multilateralism to sustain an equitable and peaceful international order, address pressing global challenges, and prepare the world for emerging developments, including in the technological and economic domains.
The two leaders stressed the urgent need for reforming the United Nations Security Council and agreed to coordinate closely in multilateral forums, including on UNSC matters.
The two leaders agreed to strengthen conversations on the regulation of the use of the veto in case of mass atrocities. They held extensive discussions on long-term global challenges and current international developments and agreed to intensify their global and regional engagement, including through multilateral initiatives and institutions.
Acknowledging the paramount importance of advancing scientific knowledge, research and innovation, and recalling the long and enduring engagement between India and France in those areas, President Macron and Prime Minister Modi announced the grand inauguration of the India-France Year of Innovation in New Delhi in March 2026 by launching its Logo.
Recalling the deep and longstanding defence cooperation between France and India as part of the Strategic Partnership, President Macron and PM Modi welcomed the continuation of the cooperation of air and maritime assets in line with the ambitious Defence Industrial Roadmap agreed in 2024.

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday cleared the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, clearing its first legislative hurdle amid criticism from the gaming industry. While the gaming industry cited thousands of crores in investments and revenues involving the online gaming sector, the government believes that the benefits of banning such games outweigh the costs. On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha passed the bill within seven minutes of Union minister for electronics and information technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, introducing it. The Rajya Sabha also cleared the legislation after rejecting amendments proposed by the Opposition members. Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 The Online Gaming Bill aims to ban all forms of online money games while promoting e-Sports and online social gaming. It also prohibits advertisements of online money games and bars banks and financial institutions from facilitating or transferring funds for such activities. In a brief explainer on the online gaming bill in an X post, Vaishnaw said that the legislation gives legal recognition to e-Sports. He said that the government will launch schemes and programmes to promote them. The bill aims to promote online social games, which is recognised as a safe way to interact and learn. "Government to support game makers & creators – part of India's creator economy & software growth," Vaishnaw added. The Online Gaming legislation aims to keep a balanced approach, penalising service providers, advertisers and fund transfer platforms.

Trump Aide Calls India ‘Laundromat For the Kremlin', Says Tariffs to Hit on Aug 27
Earlier in the day, external affairs minister S. Jaishankar said in Moscow that India is 'perplexed' by Washington's reasoning. New Delhi: Trump aide Peter Navarro on Thursday (August 21) accused India of acting as a 'laundromat for the Kremlin' and 'cozying up to Xi Jinping', warning that new US tariffs on Indian goods would take effect on August 27. 'Just six days from now, you see – I see that [the imposition of secondary tariffs on August 27] taking place. India doesn't appear to want to recognise its role in the bloodshed. It simply doesn't. It's cozying up to Xi Jinping, that's what it's doing,' Navarro, a White House trade adviser, told reporters in Washington on Thursday. Earlier in the day in Moscow, external affairs minister S Jaishankar had expressed puzzlement at the American move. ' We are very perplexed at the logic of the argument,' he said, noting that China, not India, was the largest buyer of Russian oil, while Europe was the biggest importer of Russian LNG. He added that Washington itself had encouraged India to buy Russian crude to stabilise energy markets, and pointed out that Indian imports of US oil had also been rising. Navarro, however, rejected India's reasoning. 'They don't need the oil. It's a refining profiteering scheme. It's a laundromat for the Kremlin. That's the reality of that,' he said. He added that before the Ukraine war, India imported 'virtually no Russian oil … like 1% of their needs,' but that figure had since climbed to '30% or 35%.' 'The argument now … that they somehow need Russian oil to cool their homes or cook or drive their cars, is nonsense,' he said. Navarro alleged that Indian refiners were buying discounted Russian crude, processing it and selling fuel at premium prices overseas. 'It's strictly profiteering – profiteering by the Indian refining industry, Big Oil,' he said. Linking the tariffs to the US economy, Navarro stated: 'When you think about the tariffs we're putting in place – 25% because they cheat us on trade, 25% because of the Russian oil – I ask you this: what is the net impact on Americans?' He described India's barriers as 'higher tariffs, Maharaja tariffs, higher non-tariff barriers', arguing that they contributed to a 'massive' US trade deficit that 'hurts American workers' and 'hurts American businesses'. 'Then they use the money they get from us, when they sell us stuff, to buy Russian oil, which is processed by refiners, and they make a bunch of money there. But then the Russians use the money to build more arms and kill Ukrainians, and so American taxpayers have to provide more aid, military style, to the Ukrainians. That's insane,' Navarro said. He said he wrote his recent Financial Times article 'to deal with the propaganda of the Indian government', which he said was designed to 'make people want to feel sorry for them: 'Oh, they need the oil.' They don't need the oil.' Navarro said President Donald Trump 'sees that chessboard beautifully' and argued that 'in many ways, the road to peace runs through New Delhi'. Despite his criticism, Navarro stressed, 'I love India. Look, Modi's a great leader. But please, please, India – look at what your role here is in the global economy.
