TAWAU: Police arrested a 30-year-old fisherman suspected of carrying more than 3kg of syabu worth about RM105,000 at Indrasabah. The foreigner, who tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, is believed to be a drug transporter attempting to smuggle the substance to a neighbouring country. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the arrest was made around 3.30pm on Friday at the entrance area to Indrasabah Fishing Paradise. 'The man tried to flee when approached and threw a grey bag to the ground before being apprehended,' he told a media conference at the Tawau District Police Headquarters, Wednesday. The syabu, weighing 3,085.54 grammes, was discovered after examination of green tea packages. 'Investigation to identify the drug syndicate network and the suspect's modus operandi for transporting syabu to neighbouring countries is ongoing,' Jasmin said. Asked about the potential use of local fishing boats as secret transportation for drug smuggling, he did not rule out the possibility. However, police are also considering the likelihood of speedboats being used to cross borders and enter Indonesian waters within short periods. 'Preliminary investigations conducted so far also indicate that the suspect received drug supplies from local suppliers rather than from neighbouring Philippines,' he added. The public has been urged to continuously provide information regarding drug possession, distribution and substance abuse activities as part of joint commitment with police in efforts to combat such activities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Former Senate deputy president claims trial to bribery involving luxury vehicle

MELAKA — Former Dewan Negara deputy president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad, pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court today to a charge of accepting a luxury car as a bribe in 2015. He entered the plea after the charge was read out to him before Judge Elesabet Paya Wan. According to the charge sheet, Mohamad Ali is accused of corruptly accepting a Range Rover Sport from a company director as an inducement to award subcontract works for a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana. The alleged offence took place at the company's office in Taman Kota Syahbandar, Melaka Tengah, in June 2015. The charge, under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act, which carries up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib urged the court to maintain the same bail conditions set by the Shah Alam Sessions Court on June 18 – namely RM60,000 bail with one surety, surrender of the accused's passport, and a prohibition on contacting prosecution witnesses. He also applied for the case previously filed in Shah Alam to be transferred to Ayer Keroh so that both matters could be heard together. Defence counsel Md Yunos Shariff raised no objection, and the court fixed August 14 for mention. On June 18, Mohamad Ali had claimed trial in the Shah Alam Sessions Court to 20 charges of accepting RM235,000 in cash and three luxury cars in relation to the same reclamation project. — BERNAMA

Ex-JKR director charged with accepting RM70,000 in gratification

KUALA LUMPUR: A former director of the Kuala Lumpur Public Works Department (JKR) pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Thursday (June 26) to five charges of receiving gratification, amounting to RM70,000, in connection with a maintenance project. For all the charges, Datuk Ir Norman Md Rabani, 51, is alleged to have received RM70,000 without consideration from an individual concerned in a proceeding or business related to his official duties. The offence was allegedly committed at a shopping mall here, between Aug 10, 2024, and Jan 23. Norman was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides a maximum jail sentence of two years or a fine or both if convicted. Judge Suzana Hussin, who set Aug 20 for mention, allowed Norman bail of RM20,000 with one surety and also ordered him to surrender his passport to the court, report to the nearest Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office at the beginning of every month, and not intimidate the prosecution witnesses in the case. Deputy Public Prosecutor Natrah Fareha Rahmat appeared for the prosecution, while Norman was represented by lawyer Abdul Hakeem Aiman, who told the court that his client had four children aged between 16 and 24, who are studying, as well as his parents, to support. - Bernama

Prosecution appeals against Syed Saddiq's acquittal on corruption charges

PETALING JAYA: The prosecution has filed a notice of appeal against the acquittal of Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman on corruption and money laundering charges. The notice was filed on Thursday (June 26), as stated in a release by the Attorney-General's Chambers. The intended appeal challenges the Court of Appeal's decision to set aside the conviction of the Muda founder on Wednesday (June 25). In its unanimous decision, the appellate court allowed the former youth and sports minister's appeal, stating that Syed Saddiq should have been acquitted without his defence being called during the trial. The three-judge Bench concluded that the prosecution failed to prove the elements of the predicate charges of abetting in criminal breach of trust (CBT) and dishonest misappropriation. The court held that Syed Saddiq was legally entitled to the money collected from donors for his political campaign and that allegations of fund misappropriation would not have arisen if the money had been directly deposited into his bank account. ALSO READ: Syed Saddiq acquitted The court agreed with Syed Saddiq's defence that the money from public contributions was intended to effectively finance his election campaign and not for Armada Bersatu, his former political party. Syed Saddiq was found guilty by the High Court in November 2023 of abetting in CBT involving more than RM1 million belonging to Bersatu Youth, and another count of dishonestly misappropriating property totalling more than RM120,000 also belonging to the wing. The former Bersatu Youth chief was also convicted on two counts of money laundering for transferring a total of RM100,000 to his personal account from a company linked to the youth wing, Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise. He was sentenced to three years' jail and one stroke of the rotan on the CBT charge, two years and another stroke of the cane on the misappropriation charge, and another two-year jail term for each of the money laundering offences. He was also fined RM10 million.
