Commissioner for Mediterranean Šuica represnts EU at Conference on Two-State Solution
Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, represented the EU at the High-Level Conference on the Question of Palestine and the Two-State Solution.
Commissioner met with António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General; with Dr Estephan Salameh, Palestinian Minister for Planning and International Cooperation and with Florian Hahn, State Minister at the Foreign Office of Germany.
· Commissioner co-chaired the High-Level Working Group on the Peace Day Effort with the Arab League partners where she presented the 'the day after' plan for peace and stability, after an agreement between the parties, structured around three pillars:
1. A phased, conditional, and multidimensional Peace Supporting Package.
2. A regional security architecture against future threats, and the respect of sovereignty and international law.
3. A follow-up mechanism via the Global Alliance for the implementation of the Two-State Solution.
· She thanked UNSG Guterres for his tireless efforts for peace and stability in the Middle East. She reminded that the EU is actively shaping the future vision for Palestine after the conflict, including by setting up a Palestine Donor Group and by leading the Peace Day initiative. Commissioner announced the disbursement of €30 million to UNRWA, completing this year's allocation under the Multiannual Comprehensive Support Programme for Palestine to pay the salaries of their teachers and medical staff, and discussed sustainable solutions for future aid delivery.
· At the margins of the conference, the Commissioner discussed with the German Minister of State the situation in the Middle East, the Gaza reconstruction and investment opportunities for EU companies in the broader region for mutual prosperity.
· A reformed and revitalised Palestinian Authority, as the legitimate governing body of a future Palestinian state is fundamental to reach a sustainable Two-State solution. Commissioner discussed the situation of the Palestinian Authority with both the Israeli and Palestinian representatives, in particular the need for predictable, regular flow of revenues collected by Israel, the implementation of the Multiannual Support Programme and the Palestinian Donor Group as a place to monitor reforms carried out and as well as pledge financial support.
At the end of the conference, Commissioner Šuica said:
'This conference was about turning words into action. We showed that diplomacy and international engagement can have real impact. While advocating for peace, the EU works with international partners to ensure delivery of aid, and help build a viable, democratic, and unified future Palestinian State in peace alongside the State of Israel. This conference has produced an action-oriented roadmap for peace, grounded in international law to bring together global actors to coordinate post-war reconstruction in Gaza, support Palestinian institutional reform, advance the release of hostages and demilitarisation.
A Two-State solution is not just an option, it is the only way to a just, lasting and sustainable future

W.Sahara film festival urges Nolan to drop scenes shot in disputed territory - Screens - Arts & Culture
The Sahara International Film Festival has called on director Christopher Nolan to exclude scenes filmed in Western Sahara from his upcoming movie, citing concerns over shooting in the disputed territory. Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, has been largely controlled by Morocco since 1975 but is considered a non-self-governing territory by the United Nations. Morocco has long been in conflict with the Algerian-backed Polisario Front, which seeks independence for the Sahrawi people. "We're calling on Nolan to stand in solidarity with the Sahrawi people," said Maria Carrion, executive director of FiSahara, which takes place in Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria. She told AFP the director's decision to shoot in the region "legitimises the occupation and furthers colonialism". Nolan, who won an Oscar for Oppenheimer, reportedly filmed scenes for his 2026 release The Odyssey near the coastal city of Dakhla. The cast includes Matt Damon and Zendaya. "We felt that Nolan being there shooting on a sand dune -- when there are so many sand dunes in the world that he could have chosen that are not in occupied territories -- was legitimising the occupation and furthering colonialism in Western Sahara," Carrion said. Moroccan Culture Minister Mehdi Bensaid was quoted by local outlet Medias24 as saying the production would boost Dakhla's profile "as a filming destination, and not just a tourist destination". But Carrion said FiSahara was urging the director "not to use any of that footage in his film, because he did not get consent from Sahrawis". "He got consent from an occupying power, which is not real consent," she added. Carrion said the festival believed Nolan and his team were not "correctly informed" about the region's disputed nature. In 2020, the United States backed Morocco's propsed autonomy plan for Western Sahara in exchange for Rabat's normalisation of ties with Israel. The Polisario Front maintains demands to hold a self-determination referendum. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Egypt FM, Rubio discuss Gaza humanitarian catastrophe amid Israel starvation policy - Foreign Affairs
Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday the necessity of reaching a permanent ceasefire agreement in Gaza, ending the bloodshed of the Palestinians, and ensuring the influx of humanitarian aid to the strip amid its catastrophic conditions caused by Israel's systematic starvation policy. The meeting between Abdelatty and Rubio occurred during Abdelatty's visit to Washington. During the meeting, FM Abdelatty underscored the urgency of addressing Gaza's catastrophic humanitarian conditions, according to Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Tamim Khalaf. He emphasized the need for a political horizon that achieves a just and sustainable settlement of the Palestinian cause and restores the legitimate rights of the Palestinians, foremost among them the right to self-determination and establishing their independent state on the 4 June 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Abdelatty also expressed aspiration to continue close cooperation with the US administration to break the ground for a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East that serves the interests of all the region's peoples. On Wednesday, four Egyptian military transport aircraft airdropped tons of essential humanitarian aid over areas in the Gaza Strip that are difficult to access by land. The airdrops took place as the fourth aid convoy entered Gaza through the Karm Abu Salem crossing, adding to over 4,000 tons of humanitarian supplies delivered to the strip over the past three days, despite bureaucratic and logistical obstacles on the Israeli side. These included approximately 1,855 tons of food baskets, 1,640 tons of flour, 400 tons of personal care items, and 150 tons of medical aid. The deliveries come as part of Egypt's ongoing active efforts and intensive coordination with all concerned parties and international powers to help end the worsening famine facing Gaza's population. During a phone call earlier on Wednesday, Abdelatty and Steve Witkoff, the US president's special envoy to the Middle East, discussed efforts to reach a ceasefire deal in Gaza and ensure the influx of humanitarian aid into Gaza and the release of captives and detainees. Moreover, Khalaf noted that Abdelatty and Rubio also discussed the situation in Sudan and the importance of achieving a ceasefire and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid. Abdelatty highlighted Egypt's support for Sudanese state institutions and the importance of respecting Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. Furthermore, he articulated Egypt's concerns regarding the Nile River and its water security, affirming Egypt's consistent position on adherence to international law concerning shared water resources. Abdelatty stressed the need for cooperation to swiftly reach a legally binding agreement governing the operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, rejecting Ethiopia's unilateral actions that violate international law. He asserted that Egypt will take all necessary measures guaranteed under international law to protect its water security. According to Khalaf, Abdelatty conveyed the greetings and appreciation of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to President Donald Trump, expressing Egypt's pride in the longstanding strategic partnership with the United States. He also expressed Egypt's desire to continue close coordination and cooperation with the US administration under the leadership of President Trump. "Egypt aspires to deepen this political, security, military, and economic partnership in a manner that would strengthen regional security, stability, and peace, particularly during this critical phase the Middle East is experiencing," he added. Egypt's top diplomat also urged the continuation of the periodic rounds of the Egypt-US Strategic Dialogue. Both ministers further explored ways to enhance economic, trade, and investment cooperation. Abdelatty also praised the outcomes of the Egypt-US Business Forum held in Cairo last May, with the participation of over 50 American companies, including 12 companies engaging with the Egyptian market for the first time. "Egypt is committed to attracting investments and strengthening its economic partnerships with the US," he said. Both sides also stressed the importance of coordination to hold a new round of the Joint Economic Commission meetings and organize another edition of the Egypt-US Business Forum soon to expand the economic partnership between the two friendly countries. U.S. Envoy Steve Witkoff Makes Unannounced Visit to Israel for Talks on Hostage Recovery, Gaza Aid
Ahmed Emam Steve Witkoff, a senior figure in the U.S. administration, has made an unannounced visit to Israel to discuss alternative plans for the recovery of hostages held by Hamas and to explore expanded humanitarian aid routes to Gaza, according to Alqahera News. The visit, which was not disclosed in advance, comes at a critical time in U.S.-Israeli relations, particularly in the context of stalled ceasefire negotiations and the ongoing hostage crisis. Gaber noted that Witkoff is expected to meet with several senior Israeli officials, possibly including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to discuss backup strategies recently referenced by President Donald Trump following the failure of recent proposals to Hamas. The trip, Gaber explained, comprises two key parts. The first phase in Israel focuses on coordinating humanitarian assistance to Gaza via the 'Gaza Humanitarian Foundation,' an initiative supported by the U.S. The second phase may involve a direct visit by Witkoff to Gaza, where he is expected to inspect aid distribution centers and evaluate relief operations on the ground — part of Trump's efforts to obtain a firsthand understanding of the humanitarian situation in the Strip. The U.S. State Department, through spokesperson Tammy Bruce, announced Tuesday that President Trump intends to significantly increase humanitarian aid to Gaza. Full details of the plan are expected following Witkoff's assessment and subsequent report. It's worth mentioning that Witkoff's agenda includes a planned meeting with Netanyahu and a possible visit to Gaza during the current trip. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
