Waves of Pride among many stories shared in Holland
HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — Kate Leighton-Colburn sees stories everywhere she looks. Her job is to help catalogue and preserve them for the Holland Museum. 'Very grateful to be part of this community, working in this community … that I have the opportunity to share the stories of this community,' she said. 'I love stories. I've always loved stories. I think there's always more to do, explore, more to tell.' Just like everyone, Leighton-Colburn has her own story, part of which is represented in museum's Waves of Pride exhibit. On display through the end of June, it describes the history of the LGBTQ+ community in Holland and of local advocacy organization Out On the Lakeshore. ''Holding hands on Eighth Street,'' Leighton-Colburn said, pointing to the title of one of the pieces in the exhibit. 'I love that she chose that because we always talked about when we can hold hands on 8th Street and feel safe and comfortable, we'd feel like we made it.' 'I would've been very afraid to do an interview like this, even just 10 years ago. I feel less afraid now,' Leighton-Colburn said. 'I definitely feel surrounded by love and community.' But, she said, she knows she won't feel that love from everyone. 'There's still a lot of work to do. There's still people who aren't cool with it,' she said. During the pandemic, the mother of three used to post workout and fitness content on her Instagram. Before marrying Patrick Mahomes and starting a family, she played soccer at the University of Texas at Tyler and signed on to play professionally with UMF Afturelding/Fram in Iceland after she graduated with a degree in kinesiology in 2017. After playing professional soccer for one season, she decided to move back to the US to support her husband on his NFL journey. On Sunday, the family celebrated Mother's Day, and Mahomes posted a video of her children jumping around in a bouncy house on her Instagram story. Beyond her fitness endeavors, Mahomes is a co-owner of the Kansas City Current, a National Women's Soccer League team, and she continues to be an advocate for women's sports and community wellness.
