College football's most athletic big man, plus six Coaches Poll takeaways
Today in college football news, it's hoodie season somewhere.
You know that special moment each year when you step outside and smell football? Not a football, which you can smell at any time, if you own one. But football itself, the spiritual thing. It smells like whatever kind of grass is smelliest in your area each fall.
This week, the internet got a whiff of your area's football grass when Bruce Feldman's 21st annual Freaks List arrived, showcasing college football's 101 current most farfetched athletes.
Ohio State's 19-year-old Jeremiah Smith (yes, we're going to keep mentioning his age until he turns 20 on the day the Buckeyes play Michigan) takes the top spot, unseating South Carolina's literal track star, Nyck Harbor, who last year became the list's first-ever repeat No. 1. I asked Bruce how close Harbor came to pulling off a three-peat:
'The top three were pretty close in my mind. Harbor's obviously blazing fast, and 20 pounds heavier and a little taller than Smith (who is stronger, doing 20 reps of 225 and the most dominant player in the country).
'Then there's Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor, who I had a hard time not putting at No. 2. Being that enormous at 6-7, 366 and having super strength is one thing, but to vertical jump 32 inches, which is as high or higher than a bunch of wide receivers at the NFL combine this year, and he broad jumped 9-3. When Chad Johnson was at the combine, he only did 9-0.
'I think I could've had the top three in any order and felt pretty good about it.'
Whenever I read these lists, I always focus on the feats accomplished by the hugest individuals, the Dontari Poes and Jordan Davises. And yeah, the 366-pound Proctor's reported 32-inch vert would tie that of 2022 first-rounder Chris Olave (187 pounds), and his 111-inch broad jump would beat that of 2018 first-rounder Calvin Ridley (190 pounds). This man is Thor! Imagine outjumping people half your size! Sure, that's not hard to imagine for me, because people half my size are middle schoolers. But you know what I mean. Actually, now I'm unsure how many middle schoolers I can outjump. Time to line up against some nephews.
So much more in the 101-player Freaks List, including the Columbus-based Smith leveling up by surrendering meals at the Columbus-based Wendy's.
🏆 Speaking of annual staples, it's Heisman Draft time. Chris Vannini, last year's selector of Travis Hunter, defends his title against seven of our co-workers. Based only on BetMGM's Heisman odds, Bruce's all-QB group is the favorite, while Stewart Mandel is taking the boldest swings. Full rules, plus rationale for each pick.
💰 One of the many rootin'/tootin' quotes in Sam Khan Jr.'s definitive story on big-spending Texas Tech, which ended up grabbing about twice as many transfers (21) as initially planned:
'After Tech lost to Colorado and mega booster Cody Campbell posted to complain about officiating, a fan replied with an expletive directed at Campbell and ordered him to 'buy us an oline (sic).'
'Campbell's reply: 'I will.''
📺 Netflix's 'Any Given Saturday' series was up close for some of last season's pivotal SEC moments, such as affirmations by Diego Pavia: 'I know it's Alabama and they got six first-rounders. Well, I'm a first-rounder in my mind. You've gotta be a little psychotic.'
🏀 March Madness won't expand … yet.
Yesterday, the 2025 Coaches Poll debuted with No. 1 Texas among the nation-leading nine SEC teams in the full 25.
1. Fun fact! This is Texas' first-ever preseason No. 1 in either the AP or Coaches. Wait, first ever? That's kinda funny, considering all those years of everyone worrying about the media supposedly overrating the Longhorns each season, right? (Texas has started at No. 2 in each poll a bunch of times, most recently 2009.)
2. As far as the Coaches Poll is concerned, the season's first full Saturday (Aug. 30) will feature No. 1 Texas at No. 2 Ohio State in a CFP semifinal rematch. We'll wait to see if the more prestigious and authoritative AP Top 25 follows suit next week before we dial up the scoreboard tickers, but this game could be the first-ever Week 1 meeting between the AP's No. 1 and No. 2, though a few have happened in Week 2 before … and Week 1 is kinda Week 2 these days, now that Week 0 exists. 💫
Speaking of Week 0, it'll have an all-ranked matchup (per the Coaches, at least) for the first time since 1983's Nebraska win over Penn State: No. 20 Kansas State vs. No. 21 Iowa State in Dublin's O'Farmageddon. Eighteen days.
3. While we're at it, let's keep treating the Coaches as a preview of the AP. If both polls end up matching, we'd see (per Sports Reference's AP database):
4. The main surprise for me: Oklahoma in the Coaches' unofficial No. 26 spot, down in the Others Receiving Votes shadow realm. Lots of computer ratings project the remodeled Sooners about 10 spots higher, and they're in our list of 11 unranked teams that could make the CFP.
5. Side notes regarding every August's discussions about the existence of preseason rankings:
6. Most importantly, someone gave Buffalo a No. 25 vote. Hey, the reigning Bahamas Bowl champs mostly weathered the portal! This vote might or might not have come from the office of Pete Lembo, Buffalo head coach.
Full Coaches Poll here, ICYMI.
OK, that's all for today. Email me at untilsaturday@theathletic.com to tell me your pick for this year's top-10 team that will finish unranked.

Brewers use best 60-game stretch in team history to state case as best team in the major leagues
ATLANTA (AP) — Before Tuesday night's 7-2 win at Atlanta, Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy suggested 'most people couldn't tell you five players on our team.' A look at the standings would indicate more Brewers players soon will be recognized by more fans. After all, it's difficult to overlook a team that not only continues to extend its lead in the NL Central but also boasts the best record in the majors. 'What we're doing in here right now is special,' said right-hander Freddy Peralta after allowing only four hits and one run in five innings while setting a career high with his 13th win. 'We're just enjoying the game and coming to compete every day,' Peralta said. 'We have to keep it that way.' Peralta was surprised to learn he had established a career high for wins in a season. 'It always feels good to get the win as a team but also personally for me, it's a big deal,' Peralta said. Murphy said Peralta, who was named to this year NL All-Star team, is "just getting started. ... This is the best Freddy has ever been. I thought he was really, really good.' The Brewers lead second-place Chicago by four games in the NL Central following the Cubs' 5-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. The Brewers have a five-game winning streak. They have won six straight road games and are 44-16 in their last 60 games overall. It's the best 60-game stretch in team history. Murphy said it will be important for players to keep their focus in the final stretch of the regular season. 'We really have to be disciplined right now, more than ever before," Murphy said after the Brewers (69-44) moved 25 games over .500, their best record of the season. Milwaukee's road success has been an important part of the surge to first place. The team's 33-24 road record gives the Brewers the best winning percentage (.579) away from home in baseball. The record includes winning the first two games of the three-game series in Atlanta. 'You can't assume everything is going to go our way going forward,' Murphy said, adding he recognized the Brewers were fortunate to avoid giving up more runs Tuesday night when the Braves left 14 runners on base, tied for their highest total in the last two seasons. The Brewers also have made key moves this year, including their trade for first baseman Andrew Vaughn on June 13. Vaughn has an 11-game hitting streak, matching his career high, following a two-run single on Tuesday night. He is hitting .429 with four homers and 14 RBIs during is hitting streak. He is hitting .370 since joining the Brewers. Murphy said his players 'are hungry' and 'don't every try to play safe.' As for the lack of national recognition, Murphy just smiled. 'That's the fun of it,' he said. ___ AP MLB:

American League-leading Blue Jays go deep 5 times in a 10-4 win over Rockies
DENVER (AP) — Daulton Varsho hit a pair of two-run homers and a two-run double, and the American League-leading Toronto Blue Jays went deep five times in a 10-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Varsho homered after Alejandro Kirk's two-out single off Anthony Molina in the fourth to give Toronto (67-48) a 3-2 lead. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (three hits) and Addison Barger both homered for the 17th time — hitting back-to-back shots leading off the sixth. Kirk walked and scored on Varsho's 11th homer to cap the four-run inning. Varsho's double came in a three-run ninth to complete the scoring. Nathan Lukes had two hits and hit his 10th homer — a two-out shot in the third for Toronto's first run. Bo Bichette contributed two hits, a day after hitting two homers and driving in six runs in a 15-1 victory. José Berríos (8-4) allowed four runs, three earned, in 5 1/3 innings. Tommy Nance pitched a scoreless ninth to end it. Hunter Goodman hit his 22nd homer, a two-run shot in the first for Colorado. Mickey Moniak and Warming Bernabel chased Berríos with consecutive RBI singles, pulling the Rockies within 7-4. Molina (0-1) allowed seven runs on nine hits in five innings in his second career start. Jaden Hill allowed three runs on four hits in the ninth. Toronto has 39 hits in the first two games after collecting 25 in the opener — one off the club record for a two-games stretch. Key moment Yariel Rodríguez replaced Berríos with one out and runners at the corners and retired Thairo Estrada on an inning-ending double play to keep it 7-4. Estrada left after appearing to injure his leg. Key stat Varsho's second homer — a 467-foot shot to the upper deck in right — was the longest of his career and the longest by a Blue Jay this season. Up next Toronto RHP Kevin Gausman (7-8, 3.99 ERA) starts Wednesday against Colorado LHP Kyle Freeland (2-11, 5.26) in the series finale. ___ AP MLB:

Son Heung-min signs with MLS' Los Angeles FC after a decade at Tottenham
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Son Heung-min agreed to a contract with Los Angeles FC on Tuesday, finalizing his move to Major League Soccer after a decade at Tottenham Hotspur. The 33-year-old South Korean superstar forward is joining LAFC three days after he formally announced his decision to leave Tottenham. Son attended LAFC's Leagues Cup match against Tigres at BMO Stadium on Tuesday night, watching from a luxury suite. LAFC will formally introduce Son at a news conference Wednesday. LAFC, a deep-pocketed club with significant team success in its first eight seasons of existence, reportedly paid a transfer fee of more than $20 million, which could end up being the most ever for an MLS move. Son was a beloved presence at Spurs, scoring 173 goals in 454 competitive appearances for the North London club while rising to global prominence with his combination of speed, playmaking skill and finishing acumen. The captain was given a memorable farewell last week in Seoul during Tottenham's exhibition match against Newcastle, getting a guard of honor from both teams and tearfully exiting in the second half while nearly 65,000 fans roared. But South Korea's most popular athlete — and almost certainly the greatest Asian soccer player in history — has chosen an auspicious stage for the next chapter of his groundbreaking career. Los Angeles has the world's largest ethnic Korean population outside Korea, with the city's vibrant Koreatown district sitting just a couple of miles from LAFC's BMO Stadium. LAFC is undoubtedly hoping to market Son as a soccer counterpart to the Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani, albeit on a smaller scale. Ohtani, the three-time MLB MVP from Japan who is on a trajectory to become the greatest Asian player in baseball history, draws fans from across the Pacific Rim to Dodger Stadium while attracting millions in sponsorships and partnerships for the Dodgers. Son's move to California also puts him in position to make an impact on and off the field at the World Cup, which will be held across North America in 2026. Son, the captain of his national team, already has said he will play in his fourth World Cup. After leading Tottenham to its first European trophy in decades by winning the Europa League in May in a fitting cap to his English career, Son will go straight into the MLS Cup race when suits up for his new club. LAFC currently sits sixth in the Western Conference at 10-6-6, but with multiple games in hand on every team in front of it because of its participation in the Club World Cup. Son's seven Premier League goals last season were his fewest since his Tottenham debut, but he still appears to have the pace and skill necessary to be a difference-maker at any level. He also turned 33 only a month ago, putting him on the younger end of the global stars recently arriving in MLS. Lionel Messi and Marco Reus were 35 and Luis Suárez was 37 when they went stateside in recent years, while Olivier Giroud and Lloris were both 37 when they joined LAFC last year. Son also will be reunited with longtime Tottenham teammate Hugo Lloris, who has been outstanding since becoming LAFC's goalkeeper last season. High-scoring French forward Denis Bouanga is the only designated player currently under contract for LAFC, and general manager John Thorrington has been criticized by some fans for not using the full power of his financial resources this season. LAFC spent months on an ultimately failed attempt to get France's Antoine Griezmann to leave Atlético Madrid. Son seems to be a much better fit for LAFC than Giroud, who moved to Lille last month after one disappointing year in California. LAFC plays a counterattacking, speed-based style that didn't suit Giroud's goal-scoring strengths, while Son theoretically should be right at home in such a system. But LAFC also could alter its style in the winter after coach Steve Cherundolo departs for Germany following four largely successful seasons highlighted by an MLS Cup championship. ___ AP soccer:
