Stock Market Today: The benchmark Nifty-50 Index ended another volatile session with a negative bias on Wednesday, down 0.3% at 24,752.45. The Bank Nifty, however, gained 0.12%, helped by gains in PSU Banks, though most other sectors, led by FMCG, Healthcare, ended Lower. In the broader indices, while the mid-cap index was flat, the small-cap index ended slightly higher.
For the day of monthly expiry, 24600 is likely to act as a strong support where the 20-day EMA is placed. On the upside, the 24900-25000 band would continue to offer resistance in the Nifty, said Nandish Shah, Deputy Vice President, HDFC Securities.
On the upside, Bank Nifty is still facing resistance near the 56,000–56,100 zone, while the support is placed near 54,830. as per Hrishikesh Yedve, AVP Technical and Derivatives Research at Asit C. Mehta Investment Interrmediates.
The domestic indices remained rangebound with a negative bias, primarily due to the lack of support from FIIs and prevailing premium valuations. A lingering concern over India-US trade relations following the end of the 90-day pause period continues to pose an external risk. On the domestic front, key economic indicators such as an improved monsoon forecast, a benign inflation outlook, and expectations of a stronger Q4 GDP may help cushion downside risks. However, earnings visibility needs to improve in tandem with the macros, which is vital for stability in the direction, as per Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.

Germany's Merz says 'no doubt' US to stick with NATO

Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Friday he had "no doubt" the United States would remain in NATO after a high-stakes meeting with President Donald Trump in the White House. Merz said he had raised the issue directly with Trump in talks on Thursday, during the chancellor's first trip to Washington since taking office last month. "The question that was asked was: do you have any plans to leave NATO? I can say it was answered with a very clear no," Merz said at an event hosted by the German family-owned business association. "I have no doubt at all that the American government will stick to NATO now after we all said we're doing more, we're making sure that we can defend ourselves in Europe. "I think this expectation was not unjustified. We have unfortunately been free-riders on American security guarantees for years and that's changing," he said. Merz earlier this year spearheaded moves to exempt most defence spending from Germany's strict constitutional debt limits and has signalled his intention to raise military spending by tens of billions of euros. During an Oval Office press conference Thursday, Trump welcomed Merz's moves to increase spending to patch up Germany's dilapidated military. "I know that you are spending more money on defence now, quite a bit more money, and that's a positive thing," Trump said. The US president has lobbied NATO partners to up their spending commitments to five percent of GDP from the current level of two percent. Defence ministers from the US-led military alliance met in Brussels on Thursday to discuss a change to the spending target ahead of a NATO summit later this month. US defence chief Pete Hegseth indicated allies were close to a deal to boost military budgets. NATO chief Mark Rutte has put forward a proposal to meet Trump's target that would see members spend 3.5 percent of GDP in core military areas by 2032, and 1.5 percent on broader security-related items such as infrastructure. sea/sr/jhb

Dollar index minimizes losses ahead of US non-farms jobs report

Dollar index is seen minimizing losses and recovering from a six week low ahead of Mays US Nonfarm Payrolls. Weak data from US during the week coupled with US-China trade uncertainty and Trump urging Powell for a rate cut together added pressure on the US currency. ISM PMI readings during the week revealed contractions in both manufacturing and services sectors. Moreover, ADP figures revealed a much lower-than-expected increase in employment in May. Upcoming jobs data due for release later today could provide clues on Feds future stance and guide further direction for the greenback. The dollar index that measures the greenback against a basket of currencies is seen trading at 98.93, up 0.23% on the day. Among basket currencies, EURUSD and GBPUSD are both quoting lower by around 0.2% at $1.1426 and $1.3545 respectively.

Central Asian countries stood by India after heinous Pahalgam terror attack: EAM Jaishankar

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Friday expressed his appreciation for the solidarity shown by Central Asian countries in condemning the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22. "I appreciate that your countries stood by India and condemned the heinous terrorist attack that took place in April in Pahalgam," the EAM said in his opening remarks at the 4th India-Central Asia Dialogue in New Delhi. Kazakhstan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu, Tajikistan Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Turkmenistan Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, Kyrgyzstan Foreign Minister Zheenbek Kulubaev and Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov took part in the dialogue. Addressing the session, EAM Jaishankar stated that India deeply cherishes its millennia-old civilisational and cultural ties with Central Asia. "These age-old bonds, forged through trade, exchange of ideas, and people-to-people contacts, have strengthened over time, evolving into a partnership defined by shared aspirations, shared opportunities and common challenges," he said. The EAM said that India's cooperation with the Central Asian countries received a "quantum boost" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's back-to-back visits to all five Central Asian capitals in July 2015. 'We have marked three decades of our contemporary diplomatic ties with our Central Asian partners in 2022. We have worked together and laid down the legal and institutional framework, which has provided a foundation to further our mutually beneficial cooperation with each other individually and collectively,' he added He emphasised that India remains a trusted development partner for all the Central Asian countries and highlighted that that trade, economic, and investment ties between India and Central Asia have strengthened significantly over the last decade. 'Together with the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) training slots and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships, which are the most well-known form of our development partnership, we have also started providing High Impact Community Development projects as Indian grants for socio-economic development,' the EAM mentioned. Asserting on the fruitful discussions during the India Central Asia Business Council meeting held on Thursday, Jaishankar stated that it focused on to remove impediments and add cooperation in digital technology, fintech, inter-bank relations, and to the existing list of areas, which would help both India and Central Asian region to realise the full potential of the economic cooperation. 'Both India and our Central Asian partners are committed to advancing mutually beneficial cooperation across all sectors, particularly trade and investment, defence, agro-processing, textiles, pharmaceuticals, regional connectivity, security, education, culture, people-to-people exchanges as well as new and emerging technologies,' he stated. The India-Central Asia Dialogue, launched in January 2019 in Samarkand, serves as a key platform for strengthening ties between India and Central Asia. The second meeting took place virtually in October 2020 and focussed on regional security, counter-terrorism, and infrastructure development. The third meeting was held in New Delhi in December 2021 and emphasised connectivity to further deepen the ties between India and Central Asia.
