NDMC clears encroachments at Janpath mini market during eviction drive

New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Wednesday carried out an eviction drive to remove encroachments by tehbazari vendors in the mini market of Janpath, adjacent to Connaught Place, officials said. The market, popular among youngsters for its affordable clothes and artificial jewellery, has faced regular civic action over alleged encroachments. "Many vendors leave their goods on the street overnight, which is not allowed as per the rules. They were asked to remove these structures earlier. While many removed them, Wednesday's drive was a routine action to remove encroachments and keep the area clean," an official of NDMC said. "However, it was found that vendors were using the space assigned to them for storage and even erected shades to protect from sunlight permanently, which is not allowed," said the trader. This applies even if they possess a certificate of vending, which only grants the right to vend during specified hours. A senior police officer said the action began around 8 am. "We deployed about 30 personnel to maintain law and order. The drive was completed peacefully," the officer said. NDMC officials said similar anti-encroachment drives have been carried out in recent months across Lutyens' Delhi against unauthorised street vending and encroachments by shopkeepers. In May, a detailed demolition action was carried out in the Sarojini Nagar Market, wherein extended sheds or awnings and banners of shopkeepers were demolished. Gang using Chinese loan apps busted

Lucknow: Balrampur police on Wednesday exposed an inter-state syndicate that duped unsuspecting citizens of over Rs 112 crore through Chinese loan apps and arrested two of its key operatives. Based on tip-off, police raided a mango orchard on Gonda Road and arrested Aniruddh Kumar of Barabanki and Himanshu Mishra of Amethi currently residing in Lucknow. Balrampur SP Vikash Kumar said investigations revealed that fraudsters used Chinese loan apps like Udhar Loan, Rupee Factory, Quick Loan and Credit Bee to lure needy users by instantly crediting Rs 1,200 into their accounts after uploading Aadhaar, PAN, bank details and photos. The apps also secretly accessed personal data. "When borrowers failed to repay on time, recovery agents harassed them. Borrowers were coerced to pay Rs 2,000 within a week against a loan of Rs 1,200. The extorted money was funneled into 'mule accounts'—bank accounts procured through fake documents," he said. The officer said each day, around Rs 1 crore was deposited into these mule accounts. Cash was withdrawn via ATMs and re-deposited into other mule accounts using Cash Deposit Machines (CDMs). From there, the money was converted into cryptocurrency USDT through Binance- a leading blockchain ecosystem and the largest crypto exchange by trading volume and users. Using the P2P (peer-to-peer) system, funds were routed to cybercriminals within India and abroad. The accused admitted to opening six bank accounts and handing them over for commissions. Anirudh's Binance ID was used to transfer cryptocurrency internationally. Himanshu confessed to arranging accounts after being contacted by associates in Gujarat in lieu of hefty returns. Authorities suspect the syndicate's operations extend to international cybercrime networks. The accused have been booked under multiple sections of the BNS along with provisions of the IT Act. They have been produced before court and remanded in judicial custody. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). BBMP to seize and dispose Ganesha idols made of PoP; criminal cases against such idol makers

The city's civic body has decided to seize and dispose of all Ganesha idols made using Plaster of Paris (PoP), thermocol and chemical paints. Not just that, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to book criminal cases against individuals found manufacturing Ganesha idols using banned materials like Plaster of Paris. Meanwhile, BBMP has said that only eco-friendly Ganesha idols can be worshipped in the city's pandals. Idols with materials banned cannot be installed. 'Nodal Officers from the respective BBMP sub-divisions, along with officers from the Police, Fire, and Bescom , must inspect such manufacturing/sales areas, issue notices, conduct site inspections, and, upon discovering any violations, impose fines, file criminal cases, and seize the banned materials. Zonal Commissioners will oversee these actions at the zonal level,' it was decided at a meeting chaired by Chief Civic Commissioner on Wednesday. Single window clearance centres Meanwhile, the city's civic body has formed 75-single window clearance centres at the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) sub-divisional level with Assistant Executive Engineer as its nodal officer, for all permissions related to public celebrations of the Ganesha festival. 'Officers from BBMP, the police, Bescom , and the fire departments will be present at these centres to provide approval from a single location,' BBMP said in a statement on Wednesday. Immersion facilities BBMP will identify designated immersion locations in each ward for larger idols. The BBMP will also create temporary immersion tanks near lakes. Dedicated teams will be deployed at immersion sites to ensure public safety. Necessary arrangements such as ambulances, medical staff, lighting, barricading, sound systems, and trained swimmers will be made. Zonal Commissioners should appoint one supervising officer per zone and one nodal officer per ward to oversee immersion-related activities, Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao directed. Plastic ban Mr. Rao also directed to form enforcement teams in each zone to monitor the illegal sale and use of plastic, and penalise violators. He also directed officials to take measures to clear additional festival waste, to segregate waste and send the waste to the civic body's processing units.
