Dharmasthala secret burials: women's panel writes to CM Siddaramaiah, whistleblower's advocates seek SIT probe led by ADGP Mohanty
The advocates of the whistleblower, whose police complaint brought to light the alleged murders and secret burials of sexual assault victims, have also written an open letter calling for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under ADGP Pronab Mohanty to 'unearth the truth and deliver justice in this profoundly disturbing case'.
In a letter dated July 14, the commission's chairperson, Dr Nagalakshmi Choudhary, noted that the whistleblower had recorded a court statement that he had buried 'hundreds of bodies'. The commission has taken note of reports about the claims and a statement made by the family of a medical student who had gone missing at Dharmasthala.
'There are also allegations that police officials did not respond properly when families of victims went to file complaints about their missing children, or deaths. Therefore, a SIT should be formed under a senior IPS officer to investigate cases of missing women and students, unnatural death/murder cases and rape cases that took place around Dharmasthala in the last 20 years,' she said in a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The letter came days after the whistleblower recorded a statement at the jurisdictional court at Belthangady in the district. Earlier, he had filed a complaint with the police alleging that he was forced to bury several bodies that were found half-naked and had signs of sexual assault and rape near Dharmasthala.
The whistleblower, who is a former sanitation worker employed at the temple town, has alleged that he was forced to bury several bodies from 1998 to 2014 and was threatened against approaching the police. He had claimed that the crimes might have been committed by those involved in the administration of the temple at Dharmasthala.
On Tuesday, the advocates of the whistleblower–Ojaswi Gowda and Sachin Deshpande–issued an open letter stating that there was a 'widespread public demand' for an SIT to be formed immediately. 'However, the experience of the SIT constituted in 2012 for the Sowjanya case, which concluded in a disaster and deep public dissatisfaction, continues to unsettle this region to this day. This past dissatisfaction continues to unsettle this region to this day. This past experience, far from diminishing the need for an SIT, underscores the critical importance of getting it right this time,' they said.
Referring to a recent judgment of the Karnataka High Court on a writ petition in an unrelated case, the advocates said the court had explicitly directed the formation of an SIT to be headed by senior IPS officer Pronab Mohanty for a complex investigation.
'A very large number of legal professionals have, therefore, strongly urged us to insist that Mr. Pranab Mohanty be appointed to lead the SIT in the Dharmasthala mass burials case. Furthermore, it is their collective insistence that the Investigating Officers (IOs) and other supervising personnel appointed to this SIT must also be individuals of unimpeachable integrity, and critically, that their appointments be recommended by Mr.Mohanty. To ensure transparency and accountability, there must be a publicly available paper trail demonstrating that the selection process for these key roles strictly followed this integrity protocol,' they said in the letter.

Ex-YSRCP Minister Bought Gold Using Money From Liquor Scam: Nara Lokesh
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh on Thursday levelled serious allegations against former minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, alleging that gold worth ₹400 crore was purchased with money acquired through the state's multi-crore liquor scam by a firm linked to the latter. Mr Lokesh alleged that funds from Adan Distilleries were funnelled into a construction company owned by Mr Peddireddi called PLR Constructions. "Why would a liquor company buy Rs 400 crore worth of gold? Does it make any sense? Is that a raw material?" Mr Lokesh said at a press conference. The allegations come amidst an ongoing investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the alleged Andhra Pradesh liquor scam, which reportedly occurred during the previous YSRCP government's tenure (2019-2024). The SIT has been conducting raids and has already seized significant amounts of cash, including ₹11 crore from a farmhouse in Hyderabad, believed to be linked to the scam. The probe suggests that distilleries paid large kickbacks for preferential treatment and contracts, causing substantial losses to the state. The investigation is also looking into a complex network of transactions through shell companies, with the alleged kickbacks amounting to thousands of crores. During the conference, Mr Lokesh "dared" Mr Reddy to deny the allegations. "Money came to Mr Peddireddi's company from Adan Distilleries. I am challenging Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy. If he has the guts, let Peddireddi deny it," he said. The accusations are the latest in a series of exchanges between the two political leaders. The current government has been vocal about its intentions to hold the previous administration accountable for alleged corruption, and the SIT's investigation into the liquor scam is a key part of this effort. There was no immediate reaction from Mr Reddy on the allegations but earlier, he had dismissed Mr Lokesh's claims, calling them "foolish". The political fallout from these new claims is expected to escalate as the investigation continues.

AP liquor scam: SIT raids shell firms after Rs 11 crore cash haul; ED steps up parallel probe
VIJAYAWADA: In a major development in the alleged liquor scam, two teams of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Thursday conducted raids on offices of shell companies in Mumbai and other locations, seizing key documents and incriminating evidence. The raids followed the recovery of Rs 11 crore in unaccounted cash from a farmhouse in Telangana on Tuesday night. Investigators believe more illicit money may be hidden in properties linked to the accused or their associates. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which has already registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) and questioned the prime accused, Kesireddy Rajashekar Reddy alias Raj Kesireddy, has sought details of the farmhouse seizure and ownership. 'Details of the raid have been shared with ED as part of their parallel investigation,' a source confirmed. Based on information obtained from the arrested accused, SIT teams tracked down multiple offices allegedly set up across India. Investigators suspect nearly 25 shell companies were floated to divert kickbacks from liquor distilleries, later routed into real estate, film production, and other ventures, including election-related funding. 'We are probing the ownership and links of these firms to the accused to gather further evidence,' said a senior official. Meanwhile, the ACB court in Vijayawada has directed SIT officials to deposit the seized `11 crore into the State Bank of India's Machavaram branch and furnish the account details to the court.

‘Coerced to bury 100 bodies, mostly women and minors': SIT finds 15 bones in Dharmasthala forest pit on Day 3; PAN card traced to man
DHARMASTHALA: On its third day of the exhumation operation, Special Investigation Team Thursday unearthed partial skeletal remains - suspected to be of a man - from the sixth of 13 alleged burial sites identified by a 50-year-old complainant in Dharmasthala. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The , probing the complainant's allegations of hush-hush mass burials in the town, recovered a PAN and a debit card each from the first site exhumed Tuesday. The partial remains, discovered in a forested area near Netravathi river, included 15 bones - some broken - but no skull, officials said. A forensic doctor at the site offered a preliminary opinion that the bones were from a male individual, though a final confirmation awaits a full forensic examination. "Forensic doctors and the scene-of-crime officers seized the body parts after noting down the details, including the location and the way the parts were found," an SIT official said. Puttur sub-division assistant commissioner Stella Verghese was present during the search. The was traced to Suresh of Nelamangala in Bengaluru Rural district, who had died of jaundice in March 2025 and was cremated in his village. "The deceased was an alcoholic," an SIT official said, adding he may have lost the card during a prior visit to Dharmasthala. Bank yet to provide women's details The SIT had earlier exhumed five sites based on the complainant's inputs but found no human remains over the past two days. The digging of a sixth site began Thursday morning with equipment including a mini-earthmover, water pump, pipes and rain covers. A dog squad was deployed. The skeletal remains, found about 4ft deep, were secured under heavy security and the area was later cordoned off. The complainant, a former sanitation worker, claims he was coerced to bury over 100 bodies - mostly of women and minors - in Dharmasthala between 1995 and 2014. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He had led the SIT to 13 suspected burial locations, starting July 28, near the bathing ghat. While searching the first site, officials had recovered a PAN card belonging to a man and a RuPay debit card belonging to a woman. "The bank is yet to provide us with her details and cross-verification of her whereabouts is still under way," officials said. However, sources said the debit card belongs to the deceased mother. Meanwhile, investigation gained momentum with the inclusion of nine more senior officers. The team is expected to resume digging at the remaining sites Friday under the supervision of SP Jitendra Kumar Dayama and other senior officers. As the news broke, advocate Manjunath N, representing Sujatha Bhat - mother of missing 2003 medical student Ananya Bhat - issued a statement: "Satyameva Jayate." The SIT has opened an office at the IB in Mallikatte, Mangaluru, for the public to share any information between 10am and 5pm. They have also set up a helpline: 0824-2005301, 8277986369; email: sitdps@
