Unpaid intern denied leave to care for sick parents; Reddit slams ‘exploitative' work culture

Indian Express5 days ago
A recent Reddit post has sparked intense debate about toxic work culture and the exploitation of unpaid interns. The post included a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation between a young intern and her manager, which many online have described as insensitive and tone-deaf.
According to the Reddit user who shared the incident, their friend was doing an unpaid internship but was being treated like a full-time employee, without any of the respect or compensation. 'He expects seriousness from his interns even though he doesn't treat them seriously,' the user wrote.
The screenshot shows the intern informing her boss that she won't be able to attend work due to a family emergency. 'Sir Im really sorry for the short notice, I won't be able to come in today. I have an emergency situation at home since my parents are really sick and on bedrest rn so I need to stay back,' she wrote to him. She even assured him she'd continue her tasks from home, saying, 'I'll send you the morphed runway videos by today.'
But the manager's reply left many stunned. 'When u are interning somewhere there is a responsibility too…3 days before a big event u gone missing…anyways ur choice…this shows seriousness towards ur work,' he responded, appearing to guilt-trip the intern rather than show concern.
The intern apologised again, clarifying that it was an unavoidable situation and promised to be back the next day: 'I know this week is important for the event. I'll be there tomorrow, right on time.'

The exchange hit a nerve with social media users, many of whom criticised the manager and broader corporate attitudes toward interns. One user wrote, 'If the place falls apart by an intern taking a day off, they really shouldn't be keeping interns!'
Another person said, 'Whether you are an intern or an employee, it doesn't matter. If you need leaves for family, take them without guilt and without being sorry… If your company lacks contingency measures in such emergency situations, it is their fault, not yours!'
Some went further, calling out the system that allows unpaid internships to thrive. 'Stop doing unpaid internships. It is a reflection of their work culture,' one user said. Another Redditor wrote, 'If the intern is so critical for the company, the company should pay the intern like it pays the CEO.'

Woman Drove 8 Hours To Attend Wedding, Only To Be Told: 'You're Not On The Guest List'

Last Updated: In tiny print, the invite said they weren't invited to the banquet. Humiliated, they left, only to learn later they were invited just because the bride's boss insisted In recent times, the tradition of inviting everyone from the neighbourhood and distant acquaintances to weddings has significantly changed. To cut costs, people often avoid inviting even their acquaintances. Alternatively, they employ tactics that guests only realise later. Such an incident befell a woman who received a wedding invitation from a colleague. Upon arriving at the wedding, she discovered her name was not on the guest list. She scrutinised the card and was shocked by what she found. Receiving a wedding invitation is usually a joyous occasion, especially for someone attending a wedding for the first time. However, for this anonymous woman, her happiness quickly turned to embarrassment when she was barred from attending the wedding reception. Sharing her experience on Reddit, she explained that she had attended the wedding with another colleague and was enjoying the ceremony. They had planned to take photos with the bride and enjoy the banquet. Yet, as they examined the table plan at the venue, they realised their names were missing. The woman recounted, 'We kept looking for our names on the table plan but could not find them. Then the 'Master of Ceremony' approached us and asked to see our invitation card. He then clearly stated that we were invited only for the church ceremony and evening drinks, not for dinner." In very small letters on the invitation card, it was specified that they were not invited to the banquet. Humiliated, both colleagues quietly left the venue. Later, they learned that the bride had invited office employees merely because her boss had insisted. 'We thought we were her friends, but in reality, we were invited only as a formality," the woman lamented. Still in their party attire, the pair found a local café in the Scottish Highlands where they had bacon rolls and tea before returning to their bed and breakfast to refresh. The sympathetic hostess drove them back to the venue for the evening party. Upon their return at 7 pm, they found all the other guests were drunk, and they were the only 'evening guests'. The uncomfortable atmosphere, exacerbated by 'hands-on" men, prompted them to leave. They later visited a local bar where the welcoming locals entertained them. 'The locals saved our day and assured us that such behaviour with guests is not typical in Scotland," the woman said. 'Now, I read every wedding invitation very carefully. If I'm invited only for the evening function, I don't mind, but I want it clearly stated upfront," she added. However, the woman ended up teaching the bride a lesson. 'We had put £50 each on the card and also bought an expensive bedding set from her registry. But after being insulted, we withdrew the money from the card and gave only the gift." The incident sparked hundreds of comments on Reddit. One user wrote, 'It's very rude to invite someone for celebrations and drinks but not for dinner. Either include them for the whole day or just the evening, not both." view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Gujarati mom teaches daughter Kannada in Bengaluru market, internet calls it ‘true assimilation'

A heartwarming incident in Bengaluru's Basavanagudi area has gone viral, sparking conversations around cultural assimilation and language learning in the city. Reddit users quickly flooded the comments with support and similar anecdotes. A post titled, 'Crazy how Gujaratis have assimilated into the Kannada culture in South Bengaluru', shared on Reddit narrates the touching moment when a Gujarati mother encouraged her young daughter to speak in Kannada while shopping at a local coffee powder store near Gandhi Bazaar Circle. The Reddit user, who was at the shop speaking to the shopkeeper (a family friend), noticed the Gujarati duo arriving on a scooter to buy coffee. The mother nudged her daughter to take the lead, likely trying to instill independence and shopping confidence. But it wasn't just about buying coffee, the lesson was deeper. No English or Gujarati,'' the user recalled. The child initially spoke in broken Kannada, but gradually improved with her mother's support. 'Everyone there felt so happy seeing her effort. The shopkeeper even said, 'I'm so proud of you.'' The moment resonated deeply with readers, many of whom praised it as a model for cultural assimilation in India's cosmopolitan cities. Reactions online Reddit users quickly flooded the comments with support and similar anecdotes. 'They learn it for business, but it's also cultural,' one user pointed out. 'OG Bengaluru has a strong, culturally rooted crowd, so it's natural for newcomers to adapt and learn the language to feel part of it.' Another user joked, 'I'm Gujarati, we'll speak even Mandarin if it means business!' Many agreed that language shouldn't be a barrier. 'Go to Gujarati or Marwadi shops on Avenue Road, they speak fluent Kannada, Telugu, Tamil. Anyone saying 'South Indian languages are hard' is just making excuses.' One person shared a quirky example. 'I know a Marwadi who's a die-hard Dr. Rajkumar fan. He randomly quotes his movie dialogues during conversations, and it's hilarious!'
