Matt Shakman on ‘Fantastic Four': They do amazing things but also do dishes, argue, and love each other
Mumbai, Fantastic Four is a team of superpowered individuals but at their core, they are a family with all their emotional messiness and humour and this is what filmmaker Matt Shakman wanted to capture with Marvel Studios' "Fantastic Four: First Steps". Matt Shakman on 'Fantastic Four': They do amazing things but also do dishes, argue, and love each other Shakman said when comic book legends Jack Kirby and Stan Lee created the team of superheroes in the 1960s, it was considered a bold move that made the characters instantly relatable and popular. "It was a bold and innovative idea in the early 60s... to base a superhero team around a real family. Marvel was struggling as a comic book company in the 60s until Kirby and Lee created the 'Fantastic Four', and they became an overnight sensation, and part of it is because they're so relatable. "They are very charming in that they are a real family with all that messiness and all that heart and humour, and that's what makes them special. We can see ourselves in them, and they do spectacular, amazing things, but also have to do the dishes, argue, love each other, give each other grief and make fun of each other. And that's part of their charm," the filmmaker told PTI in an interview. Shakman's film, which is set for worldwide release on Friday, stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, also known as the stretchy Mr Fantastic; Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm-Richards, the Invisible Woman; Joseph Quinn as the fiery Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch; and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the rock-skinned powerhouse Ben Grimm, also called The Thing. When the new movie was first announced by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, Shakman said he was curious to know about the cast as well as the director who will be tackling the project. At the time, the studio had entrusted him with the job of directing "WandaVision", the television series about the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe characters Wanda Maximoff and Vision. "Before I was directing this movie, I was excited about, 'Oh, who are they going to cast to play these characters?' When they announced the movie at Comic-Con in 2019, I was there with 'WandaVision' and Kevin got up on stage and said, 'Oh, we're going to do Fantastic Four'. "I thought, 'Oh my gosh, I wonder who's going to direct that?' So, here I am years later, and it's a pinch-me moment to be here directing these characters and bringing them to the MCU. It's a huge honour," Shakman said. "Fantastic Four: First Steps" marks the fourth attempt to bring Marvel's first family to the big screen, following a shelved 1994 film, a two-part movie series starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis, and a 2015 reboot by Josh Trank that was widely panned and failed to connect with Marvel fans. When asked if the franchise's rocky history added pressure, Shakman said he focused on honouring the original vision of Lee and Kirby. "I was thinking mostly about these comics that I've loved since I was a kid. I've been a 'Fantastic Four' fan since I was a kid and the pressure I felt was to do right by these amazing characters, to do right by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee who created them, they've been around for 60 plus years, and they've been reinvented decade by decade by different comic book artists, and sometimes by filmmakers. "And I think the best thing we can do is to try to find a personal connection to the material. And that's what so many of the comic book artists have done, it's what I've tried to do as a filmmaker, which is to see myself reflected in them... as a husband, as a father in them, and so I just tried to make it as personal as possible." Set in a sleek 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic world, the movie follows the Fantastic Four as they try to thwart the planet-devouring threat of Galactus. It also stars Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal aka Silver Surfer. Shakman believes a director should be personally invested in the story they're telling and if they are not, they may not be the right person for the job. "I think it's really important to be as passionate about the material as possible, and if you aren't, then you probably shouldn't be doing it; you should be connecting to the stories that you're telling and making them very personal and very specific and wanting to bring them to life in the best possible way." Shakman said he was first a fan of Spider-Man and through that character, he found the Fantastic Four. "Spider-Man is friends with the Human Torch and so I love these characters. I love the interconnected world, and I'm thrilled to be working on these movies," he added. 'Fantastic Four: First Steps', written by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer, will be released in Indian theatres in four languages English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. The Fantastic Four First Steps post-credits scene leaked online, reveals the future for Marvel's first family and a Robert Downey Jr tease
WARNING: This article contains spoilers to Marvel's The Fantastic Four First Steps and Avengers Doomsday. Everyone at Marvel Studios, including the top executives, writers, actors, and the person who brings Robert Downey Jr his coffee, currently has their backup. Even though they have had a lot of troubles since Avengers: Endgame, Marvel has been on a path towards Avengers: Doomsday for a long time, and with the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, they will soon be standing just one movie away from Dr Doom. But it seems that someone is definitely getting fired because the post-credits scene of First Steps has just been leaked online, and it is huge, to say the least. Now from the trailer, leaks in the past, and several fan theories, we know that the Fantastic Four family will have something to do with Doomsday. Now the post-credits scene of the film confirms their involvement in Doomsday, and more than that, it brings the family face to face with their biggest foe, Dr Doom. In the first post-credit scene, we see Sue Storm reading a book to her infant son, Franklin Richards. She asks H.E.R.B.I.E. to pass her the book Franklin likes. After choosing the right book, she turns to Franklin, and there she sees a figure sitting on the sofa beside her son. The figure is wearing a green cape and is holding Franklin in his arms. Sue tries to use her powers but fails to do so, and Franklin can be seen holding Doom's mask. The scene ends as the words 'The Fantastic Four will return in Avengers Doomsday' flash on the screen. ALSO READ: Spider-Man and The Punisher will come together in the next Tom Holland film, confirms Marvel's Kevin Feige There is some prior information available about this scene, which now makes even more sense, as director Matt Shakman revealed to ComicBook that the post-credits scene has been directed by the Russo brothers and not him. It is understandable why the Russo brothers would take on this role, as they are the ones directing Doomsday, and their vision regarding Doom's entrance would be more in tune with the actual film. Shakman said, 'I often think of working at Marvel as like running a relay race. You pass the baton, you run as hard and fast as you can with it for that section of the race that belongs to you, and then you pass that baton. I passed it on to Joe and Anthony, and they're off and running, and that's great.' Now we know that The Fantastic Four will be involved in Doomsday, but it also raises some questions about Sue and Reed Richard's son, Franklin. In the comics, Franklin is an omega-level mutant (strongest category), and at one point he made the world eater Galactus his own herald. Narratives between the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and Dr Doom have gone down a million different ways in the past, and all we need to do is wait and see what path Marvel chooses. Featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn, the film releases July 25.

Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby Join Gordon Ramsay To Make Sausage And Mash
Last Updated: Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby will be seen in Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby joined chef Gordon Ramsay for a cooking session on his popular YouTube show Scrambled. The actors, who are currently promoting their upcoming film Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps, teamed up with Ramsay to cook a classic British dish: Sausage and mash. As the episode kicked off, Ramsay jumped straight into chef mode. 'The secret of good sausage and mash?" he asked Pascal. The actor hesitated and replied, 'Are you going to quiz me?" Ramsay said yes, but Pascal playfully resisted, saying, 'Don't." The moment left Ramsay laughing. To save the duo from tears, Ramsay peeled the onions beforehand. 'So, there's no acid there. You will not be crying. I promise you," he assured them. But when it came to slicing, Pascal looked a bit unsure. 'I f****** hate knives," he admitted and also apologised for swearing. On the other side, Kirby was given sausage duty. She had to heat them in a separate pan with thyme sprigs for flavour. Pascal eventually took on the onions and sliced them before adding them to the pan. With salt, pepper, a bit of sugar and a dollop of butter, the mix was set to caramelise. Pascal's dramatic salt-sprinkling style (very Salt Bae, we must say) catches attention. As the ingredients cooked, Ramsay mentioned that Kirby started as a baker. She shared how it began in her basement and described it as a calming 'meditative" activity. In true Ramsay style, he poured in some brandy and a splash of wine. The conversation shifted to fellow actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach, whom they agreed was the best cook on set who always brought in 'epic" food and made morning coffee. Next came the veggie stock, which was added once the onions and thyme turned golden brown. Ramsay asked Kirby to prick the sausages with a fork to help the butter seep inside better. The final step was mashed potatoes with cream and butter to keep them soft. Though the task was assigned to Kirby, Pascal stepped in. 'This is the first time he's ever cooked in his life," Kirby playfully remarked. During the light-hearted chat, Kirby, who is pregnant, also spoke about her relationship with Premier Lacrosse League president Paul Rabil. When Ramsay asked if they had picked a name for the baby, Kirby replied, 'You simply can't." Ramsay agreed, saying, 'There are several names that can be pre-decided, but it is impossible to name it without seeing this beautiful person." Coming back to the dish, Pascal mashed the potatoes, slightly lumpy but done and plated the dish. The sausage went on top, followed by the rich onion gravy and a final touch of fried onions. As the episode wrapped up, Ramsay's wife, Tana Ramsay, came in for the final taste test. After trying both versions of the dish, she declared it a tie.
