PM Anwar's France visit strengthens Malaysia-EU ties, new deals signed

Anwar's lecture at Sorbonne University, titled 'Southeast Asia and Europe: Recalibrating The Terms of Engagement,' called for equal partnerships between the regions. Macron reaffirmed France's commitment to ASEAN, citing his recent visits to Indonesia, Vietnam, and Singapore as part of broader regional engagement.
Major deals were sealed during the visit. AirAsia signed a US$12.25 billion agreement for Airbus 321XLR aircraft, with deliveries expected by 2028. Additionally, Petronas expanded its joint ventures with French firms in Latin America and Africa. Anwar also witnessed an MoU between 3P Capital Advisers and Ardian, opening private investment opportunities for Malaysians.
French industrial firms Imerys and Arkema pledged further investments in Malaysia, supporting sustainable manufacturing and specialty chemicals. Anwar expressed optimism about Macron's potential visit to Malaysia after the 2025 Francophonie Summit in Cambodia.
France remains a top EU trade partner for Malaysia, with bilateral trade reaching RM15.95 billion in 2024. Anwar's delegation included key ministers, underscoring the strategic importance of the trip. The Prime Minister will next attend the BRICS Summit in Brazil. -BERNAMA

Malaysia's airlines acquire new aircraft for expansions
KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's airlines, including Malaysia Airlines and low-cost budget airline AirAsia, announced Saturday that they are acquiring new aircraft to support their expansions. Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, said in a statement that it has exercised its purchase rights for 20 additional A330neo aircraft through a direct order with Airbus, reaffirming its commitment to a long-term strategy for fleet renewal and network development. With this latest acquisition, Malaysia Airlines is set to become one of the largest A330neo operators in the Asia-Pacific region, said the statement. This new order builds on MAG's initial commitment in 2022 for 20 A330neo aircraft, comprising 10 directly purchased and 10 leased from Ireland-based lessor Avolon, bringing the group's total A330neo commitment to 40 aircraft to date. Deliveries from this additional batch are scheduled between 2029 and 2031. To date, MAG has taken delivery of four A330neo aircraft, currently operating on selected services to Auckland, Melbourne, and Bali. Six more are scheduled for delivery by the end of the year, with the remaining aircraft from the original order set to arrive progressively through to 2028. Meanwhile, AirAsia, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capital A Berhad, said in a statement that it has signed a landmark agreement with Airbus valued at 12.25 billion U.S. dollars for 50 A321XLRs with rights for 20 A321XLRs. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery commencing in 2028 through 2032. AirAsia Group aims to carry 150 million guests annually by 2030, reaching a cumulative total of 1.5 billion guests since inception, according to the statement.

Troops must not share sensitive content on social media, says minister
Defence minister Khaled Nordin said armed forces commanders must issue firm instructions to their personnel on the responsible use of social media. (Bernama pic) TAWAU : Members of the Malaysian armed forces have been reminded to refrain from uploading sensitive content on social media, particularly related to security assets, to prevent hostile parties from identifying the nation's defence capabilities. Defence minister Khaled Nordin said he was confident that armed forces commanders would issue firm instructions to their personnel to use social media responsibly and avoid compromising national security. 'Sometimes in their eagerness to showcase training or equipment, some personnel may unintentionally reveal where such assets are stored. 'This could expose our strengths to those with ill intent,' he told reporters after officiating the Tawau 2025 Civil-Military Cooperation (Cimic) carnival at the Tawau Sports Complex today. Khaled was responding to a reminder issued yesterday by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, who cautioned military personnel against sharing everything on social media, particularly sensitive information related to troop movements and operations. Meanwhile, Khaled said the defence ministry continues to acquire strategic assets annually to strengthen national security. These are not off-the-shelf purchases, he stressed, but custom orders tailored to the armed forces's operational needs across land, air and sea to ensure suitability and effective deployment. 'We have already procured 18 FA-50 aircraft from South Korea, three littoral mission ships and are continuing with the construction of the littoral combat ships, alongside radar purchases to bolster our national defence,' he said. Commenting on ongoing global conflicts, including in Russia-Ukraine, Gaza, Iran-Israel, and India-Pakistan, he said these developments highlight the importance of Malaysia prioritising the acquisition of technology-driven defence assets. 'We are also aware of ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, which remain a serious concern. The government is committed to ensuring balanced defence preparedness between Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia,' he added.

Bangladeshi terror suspects held under Sosma, says IGP

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Some of the foreign nationals detained in recent police operations are being investigated under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), says Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail. Khalid said all the suspects were Bangladeshi nationals, according to a report by Berita Harian. 'Some are being held under Sosma. The rest have been deported, while a few remain in custody for further investigation,' he was quoted as saying after a handover ceremony for the director of Bukit Aman's criminal investigation department today. Khalid added that a special press conference would be called soon to provide further details on the investigation and the suspects' status. 'Tomorrow or the day after, I'll call a press conference to explain the actual situation,' he said. A total of 36 individuals were picked up in coordinated raids in the Klang Valley and Seremban between May 23 and June 11, based on intelligence gathered by Bukit Aman's Special Branch. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail reportedly said that five of the individuals were involved in terrorism and had been charged in the sessions courts in Shah Alam, Selangor, and Johor.
