2025 Asia Cup: PSM Confident National Squad Can Reach All Four Finals

Barnama21-04-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Sepaktakraw Association (PSM) is highly confident that the national squad has the right formula to advance to the finals in all four events contested at the 2025 Asia Cup following the official draw in a ceremony held at the World Trade Centre (WTC) here today.
PSM president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan emphasised that special focus is being given to the regu and doubles events, in which Malaysia were crowned world champion when hosting the 2024 World Cup last May.
"Our target is definitely to reach all four finals. As the host, playing on home ground in the same stadium, the goal is to secure gold medals in front of our own supporters," he said today.

Cklamovski and his charges shut out external distractions to deliver on the field

Set for the big night: The Malaysian football team warming up at a training session ahead of their 2027 Asian Cup third round qualifier against Vietnam at the National Stadium today. — Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: There are negative vibes outside the walls of the national team camp but inside, head coach Peter Cklamovski is instilling positivity. As Malaysia gear up for their pivotal clash against Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil today, the Australian coach sent out a strong message – they will continue to focus on rebuilding. He said the outside noise in regards to the mixed-heritage call-up and eligibility issues won't derail what is being built from within, which is unity and an ambition that is tied deeply to a long-term vision. 'All these don't distract us internally. We've had a good preparation and we're ready to come out at the stadium and do the country proud,' said Cklamovski. 'We've got new players from abroad - Malaysians who are proud every time they wear the jersey and train. ''We're building a family atmosphere, and we'll show that tomorrow night.' While critics and pundits have been fixated on naturalised players and perceived divides, Cklamovski insists the squad are only focused on progression, unity, and delivering for the fans, especially with the strategic backing of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim. Coach Peter Cklamovski and captain Matthew Davies at a press conference. — Bernama 'This isn't about one game, it's about changing mindsets and rewriting Malaysia's football story,' said Cklamovski. 'We are building a long-term legacy. And to do that, we need all Malaysians behind us.' Malaysia haven't beaten Vietnam since 2014, a record that Cklamovski is eager to put behind them. 'Instead of being fearful, we want to embrace the challenge. Create a new history. We're ready for Vietnam to play their best game, we want to be at our best every day.' Since the centralised camp began on May 11, Cklamovski and his team have worked through every layer of preparation, from physical conditioning to instilling tactical identity. 'Despite many players being in the off-season, they've shown great professionalism. Everything has gone to plan. 'Our style is built on principles and progression. We've rotated all 30 players to assess and build chemistry. Every one of them knows what is expected.' One of the standout additions has been Facundo Garces, a towering centreback who plays in Spain's La Liga and now dons the Malaysian colours. 'Facundo is a high-level player. He brings elite standards and a mentality of never wasting a second. Some players have sacrificed a lot to be here, and he's connected with the team so well. That rubs off on others.' Cklamovski urged fans to recognise the stakes and get behind the project being built with an eye not just on Vietnam, but the bigger picture.

Harimau Malaya better equipped to defy the odds against Vietnam

Malaysia last defeated Vietnam 4-2 in the semi-finals of the 2014 AFF Cup in Hanoi and, since then, have lost seven times and drawn once against Vietnam across all competitions. 09 Jun 2025 03:22pm Cklamovski is also satisfied with the players' commitment throughout the centralised training camp, which began on May 19, saying he believes they now have a clear understanding of the football philosophy he is trying to implement. - Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR - The head-to-head record favours Vietnam, but Harimau Malaya head coach Peter Cklamovski believes his men are ready to tear the formbook to pieces when the two teams meet in their second Group F match of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here tomorrow. Malaysia last defeated Vietnam 4-2 in the semi-finals of the 2014 AFF Cup in Hanoi and, since then, have lost seven times and drawn once against Vietnam across all competitions. Cklamovski believes the arrival of the heritage players, together with the presence of the local and naturalised players, will give Harimau Malaya more solidity at the back, creativity in midfield and bite up front. - Bernama photo So, why does the Australian tactician feel that Malaysia are better equipped than ever to turn the tide and end their decade-long winless streak against the Golden Star Warriors? Two factors stand out: one is the presence of seven new heritage players and the other is that the team have had a proper training camp ahead of this crucial tie. Cklamovski believes the arrival of the heritage players, together with the presence of the local and naturalised players, will give Harimau Malaya more solidity at the back, creativity in midfield and bite up front. The seven heritage players in the squad are strikers Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca and Joao Figueiredo; defenders Jon Irazabal, Facundo Garces and Gabriel Palmero; and midfielder Hector Hevel. Cklamovski is also satisfied with the players' commitment throughout the centralised training camp, which began on May 19, saying he believes they now have a clear understanding of the football philosophy he is trying to implement. "It's been sharp, and again, our physical numbers keep improving. We're looking forward to turning all of that into a team performance tomorrow night,' the 46-year-old coach said at a pre-match press conference here today. Vietnam and Malaysia currently share the top spot in Group F with three points each after winning their opening matches. With Vietnam having held the upper hand over them for so long, will it stifle the Harimau Malaya players' tomorrow, or will it spur them to defy the odds? Cklamovski had this to say: "Instead of being fearful of that (record against Vietnam), it's a challenge that the players and all the staff in our environment want to embrace... and that opportunity is in front of us.' Meanwhile, national team captain Matthew Davies said the backline will not take anything for granted despite Vietnam missing two key attackers - Nguyen Cong Phuong and Nguyen Xuan Son. The Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) player said they'd rather focus on the team's overall performance rather than individual displays. "I think one of the differences I've noticed under Peter (Cklamovski) is that we're more focused on how we play as a group rather than our individual performances. "We're also focusing on ourselves rather than the opposition. So, while we're aware (of Vietnam's strength) and we respect them, I think we'll be more focused on what we do tomorrow night,' said the 30-year-old player. - BERNAMA More Like This

Rexy hails Pearly-Thinaah's 'awesome' performance

NATIONAL doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky needed just one word to describe the performance of top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah in the Indonesia Open 2025 final in Jakarta yesterday — 'awesome.' Despite narrowly missing out on the top podium, Rexy expressed satisfaction with the world No. 4 duo's performance, noting their composure and focus against the world No. 1 pair from China, Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, at the iconic Istora Senayan. Pearly and Thinaah pushed the top seeds to the limit in a gripping one-hour and 29-minute battle, ultimately falling 25-23, 12-21, 19-21. 'The only thing that I can say is that their performance was awesome,' he told Bernama. As runners-up, Pearly-Thinaah took home USD50,750 (about RM215,000) while the champions Sheng Shu-Tan Ning pocketed USD107,300 (approximately RM454,000). Although yesterday's result extended Sheng Shu and Tan Ning's lead in the rivalry to 8-3, Pearly and Thinaah's latest performance indicates the gap is narrowing. Meanwhile, the Indonesian doubles expert also expressed satisfaction with the strong overall showing from other national doubles representatives at the Super 1000 tournament. 'All our doubles players played really well in the Indonesia Open,' he said. Of the seven other national doubles pairs competing at the Indonesia Open, two reached the semi-finals: men's doubles duo Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, and mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei. Last Saturday, Wei Chong and Kai Wun narrowly lost to the home favourites Sabar Karyaman and Moh Reza Isfahani, 18-21, 21-12, 18-21, while Tang Jie and Ee Wei were edged out by Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran, 23-21, 15-21, 11-21.
