Airlines operate addl flights to Srinagar; govt says fares being kept at reasonable levels
As many as 3,337 passengers flew out of Srinagar in 20 flights between 6 am and 12 pm on Wednesday.
IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet are operating a total of seven extra flights in addition to their normal scheduled services from Srinagar. At least 26 people, mostly tourists, died in the Phalagam terror attack.
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on Wednesday said that strict instructions were given to airline companies to avoid any fare surges, and that fares are being monitored and kept at reasonable levels.
His comments also came against the backdrop of some websites apparently showing ticket prices of over ₹ 50,000 for flights to Srinagar.
The country's largest airline IndiGo said that in view of the emergent situation, it has taken steps to keep the fares moderated.
The minister also emphasised that constant efforts are being made to ensure safe travel of tourists from Srinagar. "In addition to the four extra flights already announced, three more flights to Delhi have been added for today -- IndiGo 6E 3203 (Dep: 1700, Arr: 1800), IndiGo 6E 3103 (Dep: 1800, Arr: 1930), and a SpiceJet flight scheduled to depart at 10:30 PM," he said in a post on X.
All airlines operating from Srinagar have waived cancellation and rescheduling charges to support passengers.
"Food and water are being provided at the airport, and an extra tent has been set up outside for those waiting. Between 6 am and 12 pm today, Srinagar Airport handled 20 departures with 3,337 pax," Naidu said.
The minister also said that he is personally monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with the home ministry as well as airline operators.
In an advisory on Wednesday, DGCA said that in the aftermath of the incident in Pahalgam, there is an unexpected demand from tourists seeking to return to their homes.
"In this regard, the airlines are advised to take swift action to increase the number of flights in response to heightened demand and also to ensure uninterrupted connectivity from Srinagar to various destinations across India, facilitating evacuation of stranded tourists," it said.
According to the advisory, airlines have also been asked to provide all necessary assistance to tourists facing unexpected circumstances and challenges during this difficult time.
IndiGo said that to support those travelling to/from Srinagar, it is offering waivers for cancellation fees or rescheduling charges.
"IndiGo has added special flights to Srinagar from Delhi and Mumbai with immediate effect and will be operating these over and above the regular schedule of 160 weekly flights from / to Srinagar from various parts of India," the airline, which operates 20 flights daily connecting Srinagar with various Indian cities, said in a statement.
Air India is operating one additional flight each from Srinagar to Delhi and Mumbai. It has five flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Srinagar daily.
The airline is also offering complimentary rescheduling and full refunds on cancellations to passengers with confirmed bookings till April 30 on these sectors, according to a post on X.
SpiceJet, in a post on X, said it is operating an additional flight and also extending waivers on rescheduling and cancellations for Srinagar flights till April 30. It will be applicable for bookings made on or before April 22.
Akasa Air, in a post on X, said passengers who wish to cancel their bookings will be provided with a full refund at no additional charge for all flights departing between April 23 and 29 to/from Srinagar.
"Guests booked to travel on Air India Express flights from or to Srinagar until 30th April 2025 are being offered the flexibility to reschedule their travel with a complete waiver of date change fees and fare difference," the airline said in a post on X.
According to the airline, passengers may also opt to cancel their bookings and receive a full refund to their original mode of payment.
Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) President and Nomad Travels CEO Ajay Prakash said in the short term, tourism in J&K will take a significant hit due to the attack.
"As TAFI, we pledge to support tourism in J&K, and we are confident that it will recover very quickly," he said.

Agency: Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI) Global music concerts are fuelling a spike in domestic travel, with Mumbai emerging as a key destination as the city is seeing increased bookings tied to major music shows, a report said on Wednesday. Between February and July 2025, domestic accommodation searches for stays in Mumbai during concert dates rose noticeably compared to two weeks earlier, according to a report by digital travel platform Agoda. The report is based on the data references accommodation searches made on the Agoda platform by travellers from India between October and November 2024 and January-July 2025 for check-ins for the duration of the concert dates, compared to two weeks prior. US singer songwriter Travis Scott's Circus Maximus Tour scheduled for November 19, 2024, drove a 110 per cent increase in accommodation searches, Spanish singer songwriter Enrique Iglesias' shows on October 29 and 30 2024, recorded a 160 per cent rise, while US singer songwriter Akon's November 16, 2024, performance registered 20 per cent growth, said the report. This momentum builds on the landmark Coldplay concerts in January 2025, which generated 3,300 times more domestic accommodation searches on Agoda compared to the week before the announcement, it revealed. With more and more major names across a variety of musical genres scheduled to perform in the city, Mumbai is emerging as a key player on the global live music circuit, it added. 'Mumbai's live music calendar is more diverse than ever, attracting fans from across the country to experience global artists in world-class venues. Hundreds of historic tall ships heading for Amsterdam for maritime festival
Agency: Amsterdam, Aug 20 (AP) A flotilla of hundreds of historic ships was heading into Amsterdam on Wednesday, kicking off a five-day festival celebrating the Dutch capital's maritime history. Vessels from all over the world, their masts and rigging decorated with flags, left the North Sea coastal town of Ijmuiden to begin their hours-long journey up the North Sea Canal and into Amsterdam's Ij waterway for SAIL 2025, the first edition in a decade. A puff of orange smoke erupted into the sky and ships' horns sounded as the replica three-masted clipper Stad Amsterdam passed through a lock to mark the official start of the event. Each ship is greeted with two cannon shots and its country's national anthem as it enters the harbour. Hundreds of smaller vessels packed the waterways to watch the ships pass. The event, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, is held every five years. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wednesday's parade culminates in an evening fireworks display. The ships will remain in Amsterdam, many open for visitors, through the weekend. The first event was first held in 1975 to celebrate Amsterdam's 700th anniversary and this year's edition coincides with the city's 750th birthday. Lining up for take-off: Resumption of direct flights imminent, Indian and Chinese airlines prepare to reclaim market lost in 2020
With Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's recent visit to New Delhi, India and China appear to be one step closer to resuming direct flight connectivity between the two most populous countries in the world. With the exception of the Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong, India and China have had no direct flights since early 2020, just before COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic. 'Both sides agreed to resume direct flight connectivity between Chinese mainland and India at the earliest, and finalize an updated Air Services Agreement. They also agreed on the facilitation of visas to tourists, businesses, media and other visitors in both directions,' India's Ministry of External Affairs said in a release late Tuesday. Although the two countries have not given a timeline yet on resumption of direct services, the evident signs of a thaw in the India-China relationship—notably at a time when New Delhi's relationship with Washington has hit a few roadblocks—has built the hope that normalisation of air connectivity between India and China is imminent. Direct flight connectivity between India and China was initially suspended due to the pandemic, which had brought much of the international flight operations to a grinding halt globally. As the India-China bilateral relationship soured following the standoff in Eastern Ladakh in 2020 and remained frigid over the subsequent years, direct flights between the two nations did not resume despite air connectivity returning to pre-pandemic levels globally. Resumption of direct flights and normalisation of visa issuances—demands China has been making over the past couple of years—had come up in Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's discussions with Beijing during his China visit in January. At the time, the two countries had agreed 'in principle' to resume direct flights. In the preceding months, the matter featured in talks between foreign and aviation ministers of the two countries. Chinese and Indian airlines have been keenly watching the developments, and are now preparing for direct flights. Just last week, IndiGo's Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers had said that the carrier stands ready to resume direct flights to China as soon as the bilateral arrangements between the two countries allow. Chinese carriers, too, are eager to resume direct services, it is learnt. Lack of direct flights have led to high airfares and long travel times for those flying between India and China. According to industry insiders, airlines—Chinese as well as Indian—have been looking to restart direct flights, as there is high demand for travel between the two countries. Lack of direct air connectivity between India and mainland China, along with stringent visa restrictions, led to airlines from both countries losing out on potential passenger loads, and airlines operating from other Southeast Asian countries cashing in on the opportunity. Passenger traffic between India and China—currently solely through connecting hubs in South and Southeast Asia—is less than half of what it was in 2019. All of it is being catered to by airlines from regions like Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. To be sure, the Hong Kong airport is not exactly considered a Chinese airport due to Hong Kong's special autonomous status and a different visa regime than mainland China. It continues to be the leading connecting hub between India and mainland China. The normalisation of air connectivity between India and China would likely be beneficial for airlines from both countries. However, Beijing appears to believe that Chinese carriers stand to gain more, as they held the dominant share of the direct flight market before the pandemic. This perception likely explains why China has been encouraging India to permit the re-establishment of direct air connectivity and normalise visa issuances for Chinese nationals. Prior to the pandemic, specifically in December 2019, there were 539 scheduled direct flights per month between the two nations, offering a cumulative seat capacity of over 1.25 lakh. Of these, Indian carriers—IndiGo and Air India—accounted for 168 flights, or approximately 31 per cent. The remaining nearly 70 per cent of flights were operated by Chinese airlines, including Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, and Shandong Airlines. Despite this historical dominance, aviation industry observers do not necessarily anticipate that Chinese carriers will maintain such a significant share once direct flight connectivity is re-established. A lot has changed within the Indian aviation sector since 2019. Air India, now privatised and well-capitalised, has ambitions for rapid growth, particularly in the international market. Similarly, IndiGo, India's leading domestic carrier, is now more focused on expanding its international network.
