Thai Energy Billionaire Becomes Kasikornbank's Third-Largest Shareholder

Gulf Development—controlled by billionaire Sarath Ratanavadi-has increased its stake in Kasikornbank—making the energy and telecommunications giant the lender's third-largest shareholder.
Bangkok-listed Gulf Development bought an additional 0.5% stake in Kasikornbank, raising its stake in Thailand's third-largest bank by assets to 5.2%, the company said in a regulatory filing.
The investment is part of the continuing diversification strategy at Gulf Development, a power producer founded by Sarath in 2007. Since then the company has grown to become one of Thailand's largest conglomerates with interests in telecommunications, and digital infrastructure. It is the second-biggest shareholder of Advanced Info Service, Thailand's No. 2 mobile carrier by revenue.
Beyond traditional financial services, Kasikornbank provides Gulf a potential virtual banking platform. Kasikornbank also owns a 38.3% stake in non-listed Muang Thai Life Assurance, which generated 5.6 billion baht ($169 million) net profit on 91.9 billion baht in revenues in 2024.
'We see this as a strategic long-term positioning move. Gulf is evolving into a national-scale infrastructure conglomerate—now covering power, telecom, satellite, banking, and potentially life insurance,' said Wetid Tangjindakun, analyst at KGI Securities (Thailand). 'Given the scarcity of quality growth names in Thai equities, Gulf stands out as a proxy for Thailand's structural digital and infrastructure evolution.'
Gulf has been scaling up its investments in digital infrastructure. Last June, it partnered with Alphabet's Google to build artificial intelligence-powered cloud facilities in Thailand. Gulf Binance, a partnership between Gulf Energy and billionaire Chanpeng Zhao's Binance, started a crypto currency exchange in Thailand last year.
With a real-time net worth of $12.9 billion, Sarath is among the wealthiest in Thailand. Bulf of his fortunes comes from his stake in Gulf, which has a market capitalization of about $22 billion.

Galaxy Secures $1.4B to Expand Helios Data Center for AI and HPC

Galaxy, the Nasdaq-listed digital asset investment firm, said on Friday it has secured $1.4 billion in funding to expand its Helios data center in West Texas, part of the firm's push to boost computing capacity for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC). The debt facility, which covers 80% of construction costs, runs for 36 months and will fund the retrofit and expansion of the site, the firm said in a press release. Galaxy has already contributed $350 million in equity. Shares fell 2.2% in early trading, along with the broader market pullback. The deal follows a lease agreement with AI cloud provider CoreWeave (CRWV), which has now committed to all 800 megawatts of approved power capacity at Helios. The first phase is scheduled to deliver power to CoreWeave's operations in early 2026 under a long-term contract, founder and CEO Mike Novogratz said. The firm projected the CoreWeave deal could bring in more than $1 billion in average annual revenue over 15 years. Galaxy, known primarily for its crypto trading, asset management and venture businesses, is expanding its data center operations as U.S. tech firms scramble for power and compute resources amid increasing AI competition. TeraWulf (WULF), a former bitcoin (BTC) miner that pivoted to HPC, soared over 50% on Thursday on signing a 10-year, $3.7 billion AI hosting contract with Fluidstack and tech giant Google, taking an 8% stake in the firm. Jefferies said in a July report that two thirds of Galaxy's value could stem from its data center business.

Thai Lawmakers Pass $117 Billion Budget to Help Revive Economy

Thailand's lower house of parliament passed a 3.78 trillion baht ($117 billion) annual budget, needed to support a fragile economy that's at risk from issues ranging from the impact of higher US tariffs to a downturn in tourism. The budget bill for the year starting Oct. 1 was backed by 257 lawmakers in the 500-member House of Representatives late Friday, following a three-day debate. A total of 229 members opposed the spending plan.

Should You Buy the Post-Earnings Dip in Tapestry Stock?

Tapestry (TPR) says it topped Street estimates on both top- and the bottom-line in its fiscal fourth quarter. Shares of the fashion giant still closed down some 15% on Thursday. TPR shares were punished primarily because management trimmed its earnings guidance for the full year, which did not particularly sit well with investors. It's worth mentioning, however, that Tapestry stock has been in a sharp uptrend since early April. Despite the post-earnings plunge, it's up nearly 70% versus its year-to-date low. Tapestry Stock Faces Tariff Risk Ahead Tapestry lowered its full-year outlook on Aug. 14 mostly because of higher tariffs under President Donald Trump's administration, which it believes could cost it as much as $160 million in fiscal 2026. According to TPR's chief of finance, Scott Roe, tariffs will particularly hurt the company's Kate Spade brand since 'the vast majority of its business is in the United States.' To that end, the company plans on reducing the range of Kate Spade handbags it offers across all regions by 30%, which, it argued, could help lower the potential impact of new levies. TPR shares slipped following the earnings release today also because the company's sales tanked 11% in Japan and another 1% in other Asian countries. TPR Shares Are Not Attractively Priced Other than Trump tariffs and their potential impact on Tapestry's financials, the company's shares aren't worth buying on the post-earnings dip also because they are not attractively priced. According to CFRA analysts, Tapestry stock has seen its forward price-earnings (P/E) multiple grow from under 10x to more than 20x in less than 12 months. This suggests continued outperformance or financial strength is already priced into TPR stock at current levels leaving limited room for upside. CFRA's 'Hold' rating on the NYSE-listed firm comes with a price target of $96, already in line with where it's trading at the time of writing. How Wall Street Recommends Playing Tapestry Heading into the earnings release, Wall Street had a consensus 'Moderate Buy' rating on Tapestry stock with a mean target of $112 indicating potential upside of roughly 13% from here. However, investors should practice caution in buying TPR shares since analysts could downwardly revise their estimates for the fashion holding company following its quarterly update on Thursday.
