Lawmaker Johnny Ng said he believes that the newly-launched Payment Connect system could gradually be expanded to cover more commercial activities in future, such as transactions of e-commerce, properties, or even digital yuan and stable coins.
Operations have been smooth for the cross-border payment service, which links the city's Faster Payment System (FPS) and the mainland's Internet Banking Payment System (IBPS), since its launch on Sunday.
Speaking on RTHK's "In the Chamber" programme, Ng believes the current quota set for cross-border transactions is sufficient to meet people's needs.
But he also called on authorities to explore other potential use, such as property transactions for top mainland talent in the SAR.
"For example, can we develop a closed-loop system for the safe arrival of mainland funds in Hong Kong, that can also help track the asset [flows], and see if it can also be used for sending the proceeds from the sale of local properties back to the mainland?" he said.
"I think such a dedicated channel could be established under the cross-border Payment Connect."
Ng suggested the system could also cover cross-border e-commerce activities.
"Now many Hongkongers are buying products from the mainland through the e-commerce platforms, while mainland consumers are also purchasing products from overseas.
"So can we achieve the better integration of payment, customs declaration and logistics on cross-border e-commerce? I think the Payment Connect definitely has the potential to help with such application scenarios," he added, noting the ideas were also discussed during the annual "Two Sessions" meetings among SAR delegates earlier this year.
Ng, who is a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, added that Payment Connect can also be used for transactions of digital yuan and even stable coins, which is one of the industries the city is seeking to promote.

Foreign media slammed for NSL comments

Foreign media slammed for NSL comments The Office of the Commissioner of the Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong says some foreign media outlets tarnished the reputation of the NSL. File photo: RTHK The Office of the Commissioner of the Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong on Tuesday strongly condemned certain foreign media, including BBC News Chinese and Japan's Nikkei newspaper, for their reports relating to the recent fifth anniversary of the implementation of National Security Law (NSL) in Hong Kong. In a statement, the office said the media outlets deliberately tarnished the reputation of the NSL and made disparaging remarks about the successful implementation of One Country, Two Systems in Hong Kong. It told them to remove their "coloured glasses" and stop making erroneous remarks about Hong Kong. The commissioner's office also said Hong Kong has returned to stability with the economy back on track following the implementation of the NSL.

Costly portable fans fail to blow battery doubts away

Costly portable fans fail to blow battery doubts away The Consumer Council tested 18 portable fan models priced from HK$58 to HK$339. Photo: RTHK The Consumer Council says higher battery capacities do not necessarily correlate with longer battery lives in portable fans. As the hot weather continues, the council has tested 18 models of rechargeable portable fans that come with price tags ranging from HK$58 to HK$339 for both handheld and neckband models. It found that some models with a low battery capacity but high voltage ran longer than those with a high capacity and low voltage. The watchdog further pointed out that a more expensive portable fan did not necessarily indicate it was of better quality or safer. The council's director of research and survey, Angel Cheung, said more expensive models did not necessarily outperform cheaper ones. "Actually from the results this time we can see that overall we have six models that have the highest [overall] score, which is 4.5 stars, and among these six samples we have the most expensive and also the cheapest models," she said. Additionally, all instruction manuals were found to be inadequate – some failing to place safety instructions prominently or missing warnings for children not to play with the product. Professor Jack Poon, chairman of the council's committee on digital economy and information technology, said consumers should select products based on what suits their needs. "We suggest consumers don't just look at the price range... they should look at the functions." Consumers, Poon added, should also look at the airflow of products, as well as how long it takes to charge the battery. He calls for consumers to utilise a guide in the council's Choice Magazine that lists prices, weights, battery capacities and durations for the different portable fan models.
