Manchester United handed triple injury boost ahead of new season
Lisandro Martinez is closing in on a Manchester United return ahead of the new season. The Argentine defender has been ruled out since February with a serious knee injury.
But he is edging towards a return to the side, with further progress made during United's pre-season tour in the United States. Martinez is continuing his rehabilitation with his teammates in Chicago as he aims to return to the pitch.
The Manchester Evening News suggest that the defender is set to resume light training as part of an individual programme. He is not, however, ready to train alongside his teammates just yet.
That means Martinez could still be sidelined for United's Premier League opener against Arsenal in just over a fortnight.
Speaking ahead of that game, Martinez said: 'The club is obviously going through a process of change. Since Sir Alex Ferguson 's departure, they haven't found a manager who hits the right note. Ten Hag did a remarkable job at Ajax, which is why he went to United, and thanks to him, I joined the club as well.
"It's like everything in life: you take a gamble, and sometimes it works out well, sometimes it doesn't. I think that, like any club, if something isn't working, it needs to be changed. It's necessary to analyse what's working and what isn't and make changes accordingly because that's how great clubs operate. Manchester is one of the best clubs in the world.
"Now Ruben Amorim has arrived with very good energy and willingness. I believe he will make the necessary changes. Without a doubt change is needed, because where we ended up in the table over the last two seasons is unacceptable."
As Martinez steps up his recovery, Andre Onana and Joshua Zirkzee are both back training after their own respective issues.
Onana has been struggling with a hamstring strain, while Zirkzee picked up a slight issue at the start of pre-season. But both have returned to the pitch and will step up their respective recoveries over the coming week.
Speaking about his issue, Zirkzee said: "I've got a small injury but it shouldn't take too long to recover now. I've got great physios working with me every day.
"It's not a serious problem. It's pre-season so unlike last season where I wanted to push myself to be back for the final, obviously now I just want to be there for the start of the season."
United take on Everton on Sunday before their final pre-season game against Italian side Fiorentina in just over a week's time. They then have a further eight days to fine-tune any aspects of Ruben Amorim's tactics ahead of the season opener against Arsenal.

Newcastle are pursuing a deal for Benjamin Sesko, but have established a back-up plan if they cannot land the RB Leipzig striker. The future of Sesko has become one of the transfer sagas of the summer, with Arsenal interest in the forward now seeming like a dim and distant past. The Gunners snapped up Viktor Gyokeres instead and now it is a race between Newcastle and Manchester United for the Slovenian's signature. The Magpies have made a bid of a £69.8m for Sesko and seen it rejected by Leipzig as the German club sense a bidding war in the offing with the Red Devils. Manchester United are yet to make an official bid for the in-demand forward, and it seems that Sesko must make a decision on which Premier League club he wants to join and then a deal will be struck. The Daily Mail report that PSG striker Goncalo Ramos is on Newcastle's list of targets, should they fail in their attempts to sign Sesko. Still just 24 years old, the Portuguese forward joined PSG from Benfica in the summer of 2023 and has since scored 33 goals in 86 appearances across all competitions. The 16-cap Portugal international scored 19 goals in all competitions last season as PSG enjoyed a stunning treble-winning campaign. He featured regularly, but often as a substitute, starting just 12 Ligue 1 games last season and only one in the Champions League. The Mail's report states that PSG are open to letting Ramos leave this summer. An asking price has not been suggested, but it is very likely to be less than Leipzig's for Sesko. Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins is also believed to be on Newcastle's radar as they look to improve on a frustrating summer so far in the transfer market. This all comes as the future of Alexander Isak remains in the balance, with Liverpool still interested in a big-money move for the Magpies superstar. Alonso sees the 26-year-old as "the chosen one", according to Spanish outlet E-Noticies, who says the manager has put his faith in the England star due to his "quality, vision and offensive contribution". Alexander-Arnold knew he had work to do in order to unseat Carvajal - the boyhood Madrid star who has made 428 appearances for the club, winning every trophy available to him. That includes four La Liga titles and an astonishing six Champions League titles. But the report claims that Carvajal will "have to get used to the bench" and says the veteran defender is "no longer untouchable" after spending much of last season on the sidelines with a cruciate ligament tear. Carvajal - who has been at the club for so long that he played with Alonso at Real Madrid - will turn 34 in January and no longer has the same pace and power he was once renowned for. Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, has been a huge hit since arriving in Madrid - wowing the press with his fluent Spanish-speaking ability. He also gets along well with the club's centre-backs, the report adds, and has the "character, talent and profile" that fits the playing style Alonso wants to implement on the team. It says Alonso is looking more towards a youthful outlook for the team, saying that stars like Endrick, Arda Guler and Brahim Diaz could start becoming "key pieces" of the puzzle at Madrid. Carvajal is not the only long-serving star who faces a bench role in the upcoming season. Rodrygo appears to have fallen down the pecking order under Alonso already after the coach after he was benched for their Club World Cup semi-final clash against PSG. Alonso said he needed "another player" when asked for a reasoning behind the decision, but said he hadn't decided whether on the Brazilian's future just yet. "The fact that he didn't play again is a game-by-game decision," he said. "The way things were going, we needed another player.
