Manchester United handed triple injury boost ahead of new season

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Manchester United play their first Premier League game of the season against Arsenal in two weeks and Ruben Amorim could soon have three injured players back in his plans
Lisandro Martinez is closing in on a Manchester United return ahead of the new season. The Argentine defender has been ruled out since February with a serious knee injury.

But he is edging towards a return to the side, with further progress made during United's pre-season tour in the United States. Martinez is continuing his rehabilitation with his teammates in Chicago as he aims to return to the pitch.

The Manchester Evening News suggest that the defender is set to resume light training as part of an individual programme. He is not, however, ready to train alongside his teammates just yet.

That means Martinez could still be sidelined for United's Premier League opener against Arsenal in just over a fortnight.
Speaking ahead of that game, Martinez said: 'The club is obviously going through a process of change. Since Sir Alex Ferguson 's departure, they haven't found a manager who hits the right note. Ten Hag did a remarkable job at Ajax, which is why he went to United, and thanks to him, I joined the club as well.
"It's like everything in life: you take a gamble, and sometimes it works out well, sometimes it doesn't. I think that, like any club, if something isn't working, it needs to be changed. It's necessary to analyse what's working and what isn't and make changes accordingly because that's how great clubs operate. Manchester is one of the best clubs in the world.
"Now Ruben Amorim has arrived with very good energy and willingness. I believe he will make the necessary changes. Without a doubt change is needed, because where we ended up in the table over the last two seasons is unacceptable."
As Martinez steps up his recovery, Andre Onana and Joshua Zirkzee are both back training after their own respective issues.

Onana has been struggling with a hamstring strain, while Zirkzee picked up a slight issue at the start of pre-season. But both have returned to the pitch and will step up their respective recoveries over the coming week.
Speaking about his issue, Zirkzee said: "I've got a small injury but it shouldn't take too long to recover now. I've got great physios working with me every day.

"It's not a serious problem. It's pre-season so unlike last season where I wanted to push myself to be back for the final, obviously now I just want to be there for the start of the season."
United take on Everton on Sunday before their final pre-season game against Italian side Fiorentina in just over a week's time. They then have a further eight days to fine-tune any aspects of Ruben Amorim's tactics ahead of the season opener against Arsenal.

West Ham fans fume as club confirm signing of their former bogeyman who mocked their Conference League triumph

West Ham announced a new singing on Saturday and it hasn't gone down well with some sections of their fanbase. The club announced that striker Callum Wilson has agreed a one-year deal after his contract at Newcastle expired. The 33-year-old endured an injury-ridden campaign at Newcastle last season, starting just two Premier League games and scoring one goal in all competitions. But he has been more prolific in the past with 49 goals in 130 games for the Magpies and 67 in 187 appearances for Bournemouth prior to that. He's scored 12 goals in 16 games against the Hammers, more than he has against any other club, earning a reputation as somewhat of a bogeyman. That isn't the main issue supporters have, however, with Wilson having made some comments that have angered them in the past. He once scored a goal against them with his hand and went on to describe it as a 'tough of magic.' Wilson also compared West Ham's Europa Conference League win to winning a trophy on FIFA. Responding to the announcement of the signing, one fan wrote: 'delighted to welcome Wilson - a man who mocked our European trophy, said Michail Antonio would never play CL, and made a career out of scoring against us. Truly the West Ham way. Another said: You know Callum that most Hammers were against you signing, for a number of reasons, including the times when you have dissed the club over the years. 'A chance for you to put things right. Put in the hard yards and effort and play for the badge and you will find that we can be supportive. Another posted on X: 'He spent most of his career taking digs at our club and fanbase, so this doesn't surprise me, who could forget when he handballed a late equaliser for Bournemouth against us and laughed and joked about it in front of the cameras afterwards called it 'a touch of magic' didn't he? Speaking on his move, Wilson said: 'I'm excited to be joining a massive Football Club like West Ham. 'A Club that shares a similar passion to mine, hard work, dedication and also I strive for success so I'm glad to be a part of it. 'I'm looking forward to the challenge. There's such talent within the squad. And obviously the gaffer's come in now, he's making everybody a team - all working in the same direction to achieve the goal which is to be finishing as high as possible in the league and it's what the fans deserve, what the team deserve and it's what the squad quality deserves too.'

Newcastle identify Champions League winner as Benjamin Sesko alternative

Newcastle are pursuing a deal for Benjamin Sesko, but have established a back-up plan if they cannot land the RB Leipzig striker. The future of Sesko has become one of the transfer sagas of the summer, with Arsenal interest in the forward now seeming like a dim and distant past. The Gunners snapped up Viktor Gyokeres instead and now it is a race between Newcastle and Manchester United for the Slovenian's signature. The Magpies have made a bid of a £69.8m for Sesko and seen it rejected by Leipzig as the German club sense a bidding war in the offing with the Red Devils. Manchester United are yet to make an official bid for the in-demand forward, and it seems that Sesko must make a decision on which Premier League club he wants to join and then a deal will be struck. If the 41-cap Slovenia international does fancy Old Trafford over St James' Park then the Magpies are considering other options and are eyeing up the Parc des Princes. The Daily Mail report that PSG striker Goncalo Ramos is on Newcastle's list of targets, should they fail in their attempts to sign Sesko. Still just 24 years old, the Portuguese forward joined PSG from Benfica in the summer of 2023 and has since scored 33 goals in 86 appearances across all competitions. The 16-cap Portugal international scored 19 goals in all competitions last season as PSG enjoyed a stunning treble-winning campaign. He featured regularly, but often as a substitute, starting just 12 Ligue 1 games last season and only one in the Champions League. The Mail's report states that PSG are open to letting Ramos leave this summer. An asking price has not been suggested, but it is very likely to be less than Leipzig's for Sesko. Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins is also believed to be on Newcastle's radar as they look to improve on a frustrating summer so far in the transfer market. This all comes as the future of Alexander Isak remains in the balance, with Liverpool still interested in a big-money move for the Magpies superstar. The 25-year-old Swede has had his head turned by the Premier League champions' interest this summer. Isak did not travel to Asia for Newcastle's pre-season tour due to what the club called a 'minor thigh injury', only for his interest in a move to emerge along with the fact he has been training at former club Real Sociedad. The Reds have seen a bid of £110m turned down by Newcastle, but may return with an improved offer. The Magpies reportedly want £150m for their star striker and Liverpool are unlikely to meet that demand, but they will hope to convince Newcastle to do business with Isak wanting to leave. Eddie Howe's team drew with Tottenham in a friendly on Sunday and the manager was asked whether Isak will return to training in the coming week. More Trending 'Of course I'd like him to be [back in Newcastle training]. Whether he will be, I don't know at this moment in time,' said the boss. On potential transfers he added: 'There's not much time, especially when you consider you've got to get whoever comes in, and I'm talking any position here, up to speed with how we paly, intricacies of what we do. It's not easy. 'We're still actively in the market. We're looking for players. 'Obviously we lost Callum Wilson who in himself is a massive loss and then you add that to Alex who's not been with us. We've certainly felt their absence.' Xabi Alonso makes Trent Alexander-Arnold stance clear as Real Madrid star sent message

Trent Alexander-Arnold is hoping to make a quick impression at Real Madrid following his high profile transfer from Liverpool and boss Xabi Alonso wants him to be his first choice right-back Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has decided Trent Alexander-Arnold will be his starting right-back at the Bernebeu ahead of long-serving Dani Carvajal, according to reports in Spain. ‌ The England defender is a new arrival in the Spanish capital after the La Liga giants fought hard to bring him in from Liverpool, even agreeing to pay the Premier League side £10m to ensure he arrived in time for the Club World Cup in June. ‌ Alexander-Arnold arrives in Madrid with pedigree having just won his second Premier League title with Liverpool, where he won eight cups in total - including the Champions League in 2019. ‌ Alonso sees the 26-year-old as "the chosen one", according to Spanish outlet E-Noticies, who says the manager has put his faith in the England star due to his "quality, vision and offensive contribution". Alexander-Arnold knew he had work to do in order to unseat Carvajal - the boyhood Madrid star who has made 428 appearances for the club, winning every trophy available to him. That includes four La Liga titles and an astonishing six Champions League titles. But the report claims that Carvajal will "have to get used to the bench" and says the veteran defender is "no longer untouchable" after spending much of last season on the sidelines with a cruciate ligament tear. Carvajal - who has been at the club for so long that he played with Alonso at Real Madrid - will turn 34 in January and no longer has the same pace and power he was once renowned for. Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, has been a huge hit since arriving in Madrid - wowing the press with his fluent Spanish-speaking ability. ‌ He also gets along well with the club's centre-backs, the report adds, and has the "character, talent and profile" that fits the playing style Alonso wants to implement on the team. It says Alonso is looking more towards a youthful outlook for the team, saying that stars like Endrick, Arda Guler and Brahim Diaz could start becoming "key pieces" of the puzzle at Madrid. Carvajal is not the only long-serving star who faces a bench role in the upcoming season. Rodrygo appears to have fallen down the pecking order under Alonso already after the coach after he was benched for their Club World Cup semi-final clash against PSG. ‌ Alonso said he needed "another player" when asked for a reasoning behind the decision, but said he hadn't decided whether on the Brazilian's future just yet. "The fact that he didn't play again is a game-by-game decision," he said. "The way things were going, we needed another player. There haven't been any decisions about the future throughout this entire championship." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
