He said the calculation was based on the simple ratio of the US trade deficit with Malaysia to its total imports from Malaysia in 2024. Anwar said this claim was used as the basis by the US to impose a retaliatory tariff of 24 per cent on Malaysia, which is a 50 per cent reduction on the 47 per cent tariff that Malaysia is said to have imposed on imports from that country. 'We believe this calculation does not reflect the actual tariff level and is not based on sound economic theory. The fact is that, on average, tariffs imposed on US imports into Malaysia are only 5.6 per cent. 'This was acknowledged by the Office of the United States Trade Representative in the report '2025 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers of the President of the United States on the Trade Agreements Program' published on March 31, 2025,' the prime minister said during the Special Parliamentary Meeting on the US tariffs today. Anwar said that the government takes the US's imposition of retaliatory tariffs seriously. 'Therefore, taking into account the importance of the US as Malaysia's largest export destination and source of foreign investment, the government believes that any challenges to trade relations must be addressed pragmatically and based on national interests, while maintaining good relations with all of Malaysia's trading partners,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Perlis media and locals receive korban meat in Prime Minister's Aidiladha gesture

KANGAR: Around 100 local media practitioners and residents in Perlis received korban meat (sacrificial slaughter) today in conjunction with this year's Aidiladha celebration, following a donation from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Perlis Journalists Association (PWP) president Syed Azlan Sayid Hizar said the contribution, channelled through the Prime Minister's Office, reflected ongoing efforts to engage underserved communities while acknowledging the media's role during festive occasions. 'This initiative was coordinated by the Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM) and distributed not only in Perlis through PWP, but also in the Federal Territory, Kedah, Penang and Perak through their respective media clubs,' he told reporters after the korban event today. Syed Azlan added that the slaughter of one cow, carried out in collaboration with residents of Kampung Bilal Uduh in Chuping, marked the first time such a programme had been organised by PWP with support from the Prime Minister. He noted that the initiative also allowed PWP members to reach out to underprivileged groups and asnaf (eligible zakat recipients), expressing hope that the programme would continue in the future years.

Tengku Zafrul says no by-election bid, will serve full Senate term

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz today dismissed speculation that he is seeking to trigger a by-election following his decision to leave Umno and apply to join PKR. The senator who is also serving as investment, trade and industry minister said no discussions had taken place regarding any by-election at either the federal or state level. 'Firstly, regarding speculation about participation in any by-election, whether at the federal or state level, I would like to make it clear that no such discussion has ever taken place, and it was never part of my considerations in making this decision,' he wrote in a Facebook post, after completing his Haj pilgrimage with his wife. He added that he strongly disagreed with holding by-elections without compelling reasons, as they come at a cost to the public. 'I firmly do not agree with triggering a by-election without urgent necessity, as by-elections also involve the time and money of the people. 'I will continue to carry out my responsibilities as a member of the Dewan Negara until the end of my service in December 2025,' he said Tengku Zafrul also reiterated that matters related to his ministerial position are entirely up to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'I am always ready to serve the country in any capacity,' he said, adding that he had left the corporate sector with the intention of contributing to public service. The banker-turned-minister clarified that his exit from Umno was a personal decision and not made under pressure. He thanked Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the party's supreme council and grassroots members for their support during his time in the party.
