Shia flags flying in Malaysian streets trigger sectarian debate online
IT IS hard not to hear about the Israel and Iran war which has been raging on the news. An exceedingly vocal president of the United States Of America on X certainly helped sensationalise all that and more.
But where do we stand in this great war that is far, far away from Malaysian shores, or according to Google AI, approximately 6,036 km away.
This is a question best answered by a recent viral video where a convoy supporting the Islamic states could be seen cruising across the Malaysian streets.
They ranged from Iran, Palestine, Hesbollah and many others. Netizens, however, were not impressed by the show of support since Iran and its allies were dominantly Shia, which are the mortal enemies of the Sunni Muslims. This is understandable, since the majority of Malaysian Muslims are Sunni.

Take it from netizen @adambennetttt_ who said flying a Hezbollah and IRGC flag is another level of delusion.
According to him, women in Iran get killed just for not wearing a hijab. According to him, Iran doesn't care about Palestinians when the Israelist are killing them.
However, @SonOfLenin69 disagreed, pointing out that Iran continued to fight against Israel through Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthi which were their proxies.
'And just like that Shia slowly enters into the heart of the Malaysian people,' pointed out @FeisiTangg.
Replying to his comment was an incredulous @sonotmez who said, 'You become Shia just by holding a flag?'
'It is okay because it is not a China flag,' said @TVivivanne.
@kapastulin further pointed out that these people could support the middle east but they had trouble fulfilling their Zakat obligation.
'This is how the B40 spend their weekend,' added @ZzackIzzat.
On a separate note, Malaysian representation in Iran is at an all time low. Only 13 Malaysians remain in Iran as regional tensions continue to escalate, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed.
Among them are five students, while the rest include Malaysians who reside, work, or are visiting the country.
One of the individuals is a tourist, another is employed in Iran, and six are long-term residents. There is also a permanent resident of Malaysia who holds Iranian citizenship and has chosen to stay.
According to the minister, three Malaysians who had initially agreed to evacuate changed their minds at the last minute and decided to remain in Iran.
The Foreign Ministry continues to monitor the situation and stands ready to assist remaining Malaysians in Iran should conditions worsen. —June 23, 2025

Fatwa Against Liberalism Remains Valid For Muslims
SHAH ALAM, June 23 (Bernama) -- The concepts of liberalism and religious pluralism contravene the true teachings of Islam and may lead to deviations in faith and confusion within the Muslim community, according to Selangor Mufti Datuk Dr Anhar Opir. He said that although the recent Federal Court ruling stated that the fatwa dated July 31, 2014, does not apply to Sisters in Islam (SIS) Forum Malaysia as an organisation, the fatwa remains valid and binding for individual Muslims. The Mufti explained that the decision does not undermine the fatwa's legitimacy with regard to individuals or the prohibition on any Muslim embracing pluralism, liberalism, or any other beliefs contrary to Islamic teachings. The fatwa was issued in accordance with Syariah law requirements and the Maqasid Syariah principles, including the preservation of religion, intellect, and lineage. 'Our department stands firmly with the Selangor Islamic Religious Council and respectfully supports the Sultan of Selangor's expression of disappointment regarding the Federal Court's recent decision, which stated that the fatwa does not apply to SIS Forum Malaysia due to the fact that it is an organisation, association, company or institution, but instead only applies to individuals. 'However, our department respects the rule of law and judicial decisions made by the Federal Court as the highest judicial institution in the country's legal system,' he said in a statement. In this regard, Anhar advised Muslims not to be influenced by misguided ideas promoting liberalism and religious pluralism under the guise of freedom or human rights propagated through social media, writings, and open forums. He stressed that true Islamic law should be the benchmark, not merely human logic, as the latter could jeopardise one's faith. The Mufti Department also reiterated its commitment to supporting authorities, non-governmental organisations, and individuals in monitoring and correcting any deviant teachings, beliefs, or ideologies that contradict the true Islamic teachings.

Israel says struck to ‘obstruct access routes' to Iran's Fordo
JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said it had launched air raids Monday to block access to Iran's enriched uranium facility in Fordo which was bombed by the United States at the weekend. A military statement said Israeli forces had 'struck in order to obstruct access routes to the Fordo enrichment site' which US President Donald Trump said had been 'totally obliterated' by the US strikes. There has been speculation that Iran might have moved out some of its known 400-kilogramme stockpile of highly enriched uranium before the US bombing of its storage sites in the early hours of Sunday. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which has been monitoring Iran's nuclear programme, called earlier Monday for access to the Islamic republic's nuclear sites to 'account for' the uranium. 'There needs to be a cessation of hostilities for the necessary safety and security conditions to prevail so that Iran can let IAEA teams into the sites to assess the situation,' the head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, said. Speaking to an emergency meeting of the organisation's board of governors in Vienna, he said that 'at this time, no-one including the IAEA, is in a position to have fully assessed the underground damage at Fordo.' Asked about the location of Iran's enriched uranium stockpile on Sunday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had 'interesting intelligence' but declined to elaborate. 'We're following that,' he told reporters. 'We've been following it very closely... we have interesting intelligence on that which you'll excuse me if I don't share with you.' Merdeka Center's Survey Shows PM Anwar's Approval Rating Rises To 55 Pct
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- A survey by Merdeka Center, an independent organisation focused on public opinion research and socio-economic analysis, found that a majority of Malaysian voters gave Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim a positive approval rating of 55 per cent in May this year compared with 43 per cent in June last year. The centre said the survey on 1,208 registered voters showed that Malaysians are beginning to feel that the country is finally on steadier ground with political turbulence easing and Anwar now leading a government with a two-thirds parliamentary majority. 'Institutional reforms like the revived Parliamentary Services Act 2025 also signal a return to principled governance,' it said in a statement today. It said public frustration over the cost of living has also been mitigated by the government's minimum wage increase to RM1,700 combined with festive cash aid for civil servants and ongoing fuel subsidies amid inflation at a three-year low of 1.4 per cent in March 2025 and economic growth hitting 4.4 per cent in the first quarter. 'While the survey continues to show that the public's top concerns remain the economy, the absence of price shocks despite the withdrawal of diesel fuel subsidies in 2024 has helped ease sentiments,' it said. The centre said Anwar has also enhanced Malaysia's global profile by hosting China's President Xi Jinping and chairing ASEAN in 2025 which gave him a diplomatic spotlight. 'New investment deals, trade cooperation and leadership in Global South initiatives have bolstered his image at home,' it said. At the same time, the centre said the federal government's rating also improved to 50 per cent in May 2025 compared with 40 per cent in June 2024.
