Stephen A. Smith addresses ‘uncomfortable' Shannon Sharpe lawsuit for first time

New York Post23-04-2025

Stephen A. Smith has broken his silence on the rape allegations against his ESPN colleague Shannon Sharpe.
On his self-titled podcast released Tuesday, Smith spent nearly 20 minutes discussing the topic, calling it a 'sad situation.'
'Shannon Sharpe is somebody I work with a couple of days a week. Shannon Sharpe is somebody I brought to ESPN … We've grown close as friends … I certainly root for him,' he said.

Sharpe denied the accusations Monday through his lawyer, Lanny J. Davis and doubled down on his denial in a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday.
An uncertain Smith, who has worked with Sharpe on 'First Take' since September 2023, said he couldn't 'speak to his innocence or guilt from a knowledgeable place.'

'Even though I got love and respect for Shannon Sharpe, and I'm sincerely hopeful and prayerful that he is completely innocent of the allegations that have been levied against him,' he added,
Smith admitted that he was 'a bit torn' on Sharpe's response, first giving credence to Sharpe's argument that the accuser's lawyer, Tony Buzbee, who also represented plaintiffs in the Jay-Z, Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Deshaun Watson cases, 'targets black men.'

But he later questioned how Sharpe has handled the situation since news broke of the lawsuit on Monday morning.

'On one hand, going on the offensive to defend himself, I completely understand where Shannon Sharpe is coming from,' Smith said. 'On the other hand, when his legal team issued out the press release on X yesterday and they spoke about (her), they mentioned her name, and they revealed some of those explicit text messages. That was uncomfortable. And I don't know if that's a strategy that will work.'
In multiple press releases, Davis named the accuser and unveiled a series of explicit texts allegedly sent by Sharpe's accuser, which Davis argues are indicative of a consensual relationship that included 'role-playing' and 'fantasy.'

Davis said his client was willing to pay the plaintiff 'at least $10 million' in a settlement for her silence as the two sides were in the midst of a mediation prior to the lawsuit.

Smith added that he had spoken to Sharpe since the allegations emerged and he 'emphatically' denied claims.
'In my perfect world, [Sharpe] moves on and somehow, some way, we find this all to be false,' Smith said. 'But it doesn't seem like that's the way things are about to go down, considering how Mr. Buzbee is and how emphatic his client is proclaiming that she is right and she is telling the truth. I don't know where this is going to go. I can't speak to anything else.'
Sharpe appeared on 'First Take' on Tuesday, but Smith admitted that the Worldwide Leader still has decisions to make on the issue.
ESPN told The Post it had 'no comment' on the situation on Monday.
'I have no idea what direction ESPN will go in when it comes to this matter,' Smith said. 'All I do know is it won't be me making the decision. It will be others upstairs. In the end, all of us have someone to answer to. No matter how maverick we try to be.'

New York Giants' Jaxson Dart says Brian Burns opened his eyes to NFL speed

New York Giants' Jaxson Dart says Brian Burns opened his eyes to NFL speed New York Giants first-round pick Jaxson Dart is wasting no time in making his presence known to the local media and the fans. On Friday night, Dart and his fellow Giants rookies took in the Yankees-Boston Red Sox game at Yankee Stadium. He was invited on the air by the Yankees' broadcast team of Michael Kay, David Cone, and Paul O'Neill. Dart explained how he came to be a Yankees fan and even showed a picture of himself as a young boy attending a game in the Bronx in 2008. Dart said he had played baseball as a kid and was on a travel team. He believes he could have been a major league player had he not devoted himself to football. Kay asked him if his No. 2 jersey in college had anything to do with another famous No. 2, Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop, Derek Jeter. "There's some ties to that. Are some ties to that. It's kind of crazy. But yeah, that was my, you know, my favorite athlete growing up," he said. Dart went on to say that the notion of playing in New York did not intimidate him but he did notice that the NFL players are a lot quicker than he has been used to. "Oh, yeah, I had my first, you know, I don't think I've had, like, my full experience of kind of seeing that, but I've had a little experience with Brian Burns chasing me," he said. "He had a read option play and just, you know, his ability to come to come back and chase me down was kind of crazy." Dart, the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft out of Ole Miss, is heading into Giants camp the No. 3 quarterback behind Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston but could end up under center in a game at some point this season. "I think that when you come into a situation like this, first of all, I'm in a super special position to be able to learn from guys like Russ (Wilson), Jameis (Winston), and Tommy (DeVito), guys who have competed at the highest level," Dart said. "Russ winning the Super Bowl, and, you know, to kind of pick their brains each and every day has been awesome for me, especially for how young I am. But I think that my focus right now is to try to develop each and every day and do whatever I can to make the team better, and I just want to win. I can't stand losing, and I'm gonna do whatever it takes, to not let that happen. So whatever my role is, I'm gonna play the best way that I can."

New York Giants' Dexter Lawrence among stars 'on the radar' for potential new contract

New York Giants' Dexter Lawrence among stars 'on the radar' for potential new contract Star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence is the engine that drives the New York Giants' defense. Though he still has three years remaining on the four-year, $87.5 million contract extension he signed during the 2023 offseason, there's a chance discussions of a new deal may arise sooner rather than later. When looking at the potential big deals coming down the pike, Anthony Holzman-Escareno of included Lawrence as a player who could be on the radar for a new deal following the 2025 campaign. Lawrence is the best interior defensive linemen this side of Chris Jones. Lawrence led the NFL in sacks through the first eight weeks of the 2024 season, despite being double-teamed at the league's highest rate (63.8%). He has three years remaining on his current deal, but if he can put together a dominant 2025 season, Lawrence is the type of building block you make sure to keep around and keep happy. Lawrence was firmly in the discussion for the Defensive Player of the Year Award before he suffered a season-ending elbow injury in Week 12. Per Pro Football Focus, Lawrence recorded 36 total pressures to go along with nine sacks and 16 QB hits. Over the next three seasons, Lawrence carries salary-cap hits of $23.7 million, $26.96 million, and $26.5 million, respectively, per Spotrac. A new deal may seem premature, but an extension could help the Giants free up some future money with Malik Nabers (after 2026) and Kayvon Thibodeaux likely seeking new contracts soon as well. If Lawrence continues to play at this elite level, which is possible for defensive tackles going into their 30s, there is certainly a conversation that will need to be had potentially after the 2025 season.

Ex-New York Giants DT Chris Canty accused of 'bullying' renter

Former New York Giants defensive lineman Chris Canty is allegedly playing hardball with the lone tenant of a Manhattan townhouse he has owned since 2020. Canty, now an ESPN Radio host in New York City, has one tenant remaining in the Upper West Side building, which is reportedly worth $5.2 million. From the New York Post: The 6-foot-7-inch, 380-pound defensive end wants to transform the nine-unit West 89th Street building into his own luxury townhouse — but 5-foot-6 data analyst Stuart Kalmenson stands in his way. Kalmenson, 59, has lived in his two-bedroom apartment just steps from Central Park for 19 years, paying $2,600 a month rent when Canty, who works out of NYC for ESPN and has a home in Hilton Head, South Carolina, bought the building. Kalmenson has spent more than two years without utilities, made it through the winter without heat or hot water; and lives with floors so rotted and chewed through by mice he's been force 'to 'block off' about one-third of the living room for safety reasons,' he claimed in court filings. Legal action has been filed on both sides and is ongoing. The issue is still unresolved. 'If I'm entitled to a rent-stabilized lease. I don't need to get bullied out of my own home by some guy just because he happened to be a football player,' Kalmenson representatives claim since the building is a co-op, it is not subject to rent stabilization. All of the other tenants who resided in the building when Canty bought it moved out when their leases expired, allowing renovations to begin.
