
US losing crucial hypersonic race to China and Russia
Hypersonic weapons promise game-changing war-fighting capabilities, but unresolved technological flaws, operational vulnerabilities and strategic risks may outweigh their potential advantage for the US military.
This month, the US Congressional Research Service (CRS) released a report saying that despite the US's intensified efforts to develop hypersonic weapons, significant questions persist about their operational performance in real-world scenarios.
While rivals Russia and China have reportedly deployed operational hypersonic glide vehicles (HGV), the US remains focused on conventionally armed systems requiring higher accuracy and advanced technology than their nuclear-armed counterparts.
However, no US hypersonic weapon system has reached full operational status and prototypes continue to undergo evaluation. Critics question the necessity of these weapons for deterrence and highlight their undefined mission roles and high costs.
Meanwhile, adversaries' advancements in hypersonic technology raise concerns about eroding the US's qualitative edge.
Despite a substantial budget increase to US$6.9 billion for hypersonic research in FY2025, issues surrounding detection, defense and the feasibility of wide-area protection against such threats remain unresolved.
US missile defense systems are ill-equipped to counter hypersonic threats, as the weapons are built to evade conventional tracking and interception frameworks.
Analysts are divided on the utility of these investments, while the US Congress must balance enhancing offensive capabilities and strengthening hypersonic defense in the face of mounting Chinese and Russian threats.
This ambiguity complicates the US Department of Defense's (DOD) strategic calculus and may necessitate new arms control measures or risk mitigation strategies.
At the tactical level, Andreas Schmidt mentions in a 2024 Military Review article that hypersonic weapons offer significant advantages through their high speed, maneuverability and survivability. Because they can reach speeds beyond Mach 5, they minimize the reaction time of enemy defenses and reduce the chances of interception.
Schmidt adds that these weapons can avoid exo-atmospheric missile defenses by operating within the atmosphere at altitudes between 20 and 60 kilometers and can perform planned and reactive maneuvers to avoid interceptors while delivering rapid and accurate impacts.
However, in a January 2022 Defense One article, Joshua Pollack mentions that US hypersonic weapons tests often fail because of aggressive development schedules and immature technologies.
The DOD's rush to rapidly prototype and test these weapons has led to poor design, inadequate testing and insufficient oversight, Pollack argues. Failed tests involving the AGM-183 Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) and the US Army's Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW), along with a canceled test in March 2023 due to battery issues, highlight these challenges.
Despite multiple setbacks, Francis Mahon and Punch Moulton argue in a January 2025 article for 1945 that adopting a 'Fail Fast' approach is crucial for US missile dominance.
This method involves rapid testing, learning from failures and iterative improvements, and accelerating innovation and technological advancement. They say frequent testing and accepting failures allow the US to quickly adapt and enhance its hypersonic capabilities, ensuring it stays ahead of near-peer competitors like China and Russia.
Even if the US gets its hypersonic weapons program up to speed, David Wright and Cameron Tracy mention in a March 2024 Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists article that significant accuracy challenges arise due to extreme thermal stress and communication disruptions during flight.
These issues damage sensitive electronics and affect targeting systems, the report says. High drag during low-altitude flight can also slow hypersonic weapons, making them easier targets for missile defense systems.
Shawn Rostker argues in a RealClear Defense article that the high cost of hypersonic weapons—one-third more than ballistic missiles with maneuverable warheads—does not justify their tactical benefits. Cruise missiles or drones may suffice for many missions, Rostker says.
At the operational level, the US must integrate hypersonic missiles to counter anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) strategies and ensure command-and-control resilience against adversary interference.
In a separate January 2025 RealClear Defense article, Mahon and Moulton mention that hypersonic missiles effectively counter US near-peer adversaries' A2/AD approach.
These weapons can breach and neutralize integrated air defense systems from a distance and overcome long-range anti-ship systems, granting US air and naval forces greater operational freedom.
However, Heather Penney mentions in a May 2023 Air & Space Forces Magazine article that US kill chains—the sequence of steps needed to detect and attack targets—are vulnerable due to their dependence on interconnected components.
China has developed means to jam networks or sensors and defeat weapons in the end stage of the attack, potentially breaking the kill chain at every step.
At the strategic level, the US must assess the necessity of nuclear-armed hypersonic weapons for strategic deterrence against advanced missile defenses while managing risks of miscalculation and escalation.
Despite the US emphasis on conventionally armed hypersonic weapons, Stephen Reny mentions in a 2020 Strategic Studies Quarterly article that the US may consider nuclear-armed hypersonic weapons necessary to counter advanced ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems and restore a credible second-strike capability vis-à-vis China and Russia's modernizing nuclear arsenals.
Nuclear-armed hypersonic weapons can bypass missile defenses, ensuring credible retaliation and maintaining global deterrence stability.
However, Shannon Bugos and Kingston Reif argue in a September 2021 Arms Control Association (ACA) report that hypersonic weapons challenge strategic stability by increasing the risks of escalation and arms races.
Their speed and maneuverability reduce response time, complicating threat assessment and increasing the chances of miscalculation. They create risks through target and warhead ambiguity, where attacks on dual-use facilities might be mistaken for nuclear strikes.
America's stalling US hypersonic weapons program is ultimately a race against failure—one where time, technology and strategy intersect. Whether the US can overcome its challenges and match the pace set by its adversaries will shape the future of military dominance.
More than an arms race, hypersonic weapon competition defines today's geopolitical contest, and the US must decide whether to accelerate, recalibrate or rethink its approach, arguably before it is too late.

US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke Thursday, with both sides agreeing to talks to prevent an all-out trade war over tariffs and global rare earth supplies. Trump said the call reached a 'very positive conclusion' and that they agreed to meet in person — but Beijing issued a more muted readout saying that Xi spoke of a need to 'correct the course' of ties. The call — the first to be publicly announced since Trump returned to power in January — comes after Beijing and Washington accused each other of jeopardizing a trade war truce agreed last month in Geneva. Trump said a high-level US trade team including his treasury secretary, commerce secretary and US trade representative would meet Chinese officials soon. 'The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries,' Trump said on Truth Social. 'President Xi graciously invited the First Lady and me to visit China, and I reciprocated. As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing,' he added. Trump said they would announce the time and place later. But the leaders did not discuss Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Trump said, despite long-standing US hopes that Beijing could exert influence over Moscow to end the war. 'The conversation was focused almost entirely on TRADE,' said Trump, adding that they hoped to have resolved issues over crucial rare earth minerals used in tech products. Relations between superpower rivals Beijing and Washington have been fraught since April, when Trump introduced sweeping worldwide tariffs that targeted China most heavily. At one point the United States hit China with additional levies of 145 percent on its goods as both sides engaged in tit-for-tat escalation. China's countermeasures on US goods reached 125 percent. Trump had described Xi as recently as Wednesday as 'extremely hard to make a deal with.' Chinese state media said Trump had requested the call. There was no immediate confirmation from the White House. 'Correcting the course' In its more restrained readout, Beijing said that relations needed more work. 'Correcting the course of the big ship of Sino-US relations requires us to steer well and set the direction, especially to eliminate all kinds of interference and even destruction, which is particularly important,' Xi told Trump, according to state news agency Xinhua. The agency reported that the pair discussed the self-ruled democratic island of Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory and has threatened to seize by force. Xi warned his US counterpart that Washington should handle the issue 'with caution' to avoid Taiwanese separatists 'dragging China and the United States into the danger of conflict,' Xinhua said. But Xi also extended Trump a welcome to return to China, according to the agency, following an earlier trip during his first term in 2017. Until Thursday, the two leaders had not had any confirmed contact since the Republican returned to power in January, despite frequent claims by the US president that such a call was imminent. Beijing and Washington agreed in Geneva last month to slash their staggeringly high tariffs for 90 days, but the two sides have since traded blame for derailing the deal. US Trojan horse alarms pushing China's robots to Europe
Chinese robot makers are expanding their presence in Europe amid the growing risk of having their products banned by Washington if the US-China technology war escalates. Distributors of Unitree Robotics and several others backed by Chinese technology giants such as Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent (a tech trio known as BAT), said at a recent event in London that Chinese firms are actively seeking European customers and partners. She said Chinese and US firms, which are good at hardware and brains, respectively, should collaborate and utilize each other's strengths. However, she noted that some Chinese players are now seeking to diversify their markets. 'We have seen a shift in focus of some Chinese players to Europe,' she said. 'They are saying: The US has so much instability and uncertainty. We don't want to put all eggs in one basket.' She suggested Europe could benefit from the changing political situation between the US and China, as Chinese robot makers want to build stronger relationships with the bloc. Liu said Europe is the best place in the world for Chinese firms to deploy robotic technologies because: Europe has labor shortage challenges; Europe has intense industrial and agricultural scenes for the deployment of robots; Europe is a global leader in regulations and a good gatekeeper for ethics, safety and standards; China has a complete electronic supply chain for companies to finish proof-of-concept (POC) and mass-produce their robots. She said Chinese robot makers should target markets related to research and education, inspection and patrolling, hospitality and services, material handling and so-called 'teleoperation', which allows workers in low-wage countries to control robots remotely and work in shops and factories in high-cost countries. At the same time, Chinese robots are under assault in America. On May 9, the US Congress' Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) said its members signed a bipartisan letter warning of a growing national security threat posed by Unitree's 'dual-use' robots. The committee called for an investigation into Unitree's connection to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and whether the company's products contain built-in backdoors that transmit data back to China. It said China might use the robots' remote-access features to spy, gather intelligence or cause Trojan horse-like disruption inside the US. 'The fact that PLA-connected robots are operating in US prisons and even within Army operations should be a wake-up call,' said committee chairman John Moolenaar. 'These machines are not just tools—they are potential surveillance devices backed by the CCP.' In November 2022, the Federal Communications Commission banned the import of communications equipment made by China's Huawei Technologies and ZTE because they were 'deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to national security.' In early 2024, the Biden administration warned of potential national security risks associated with Chinese electric vehicle imports. Autodiscovery, a UK-based distributor for China's Unitree and AgileX, said on its website that it can disable all networking features if a customer wishes to use the robot in a secure environment. According to official footage, Unitree G1 and US robot maker Boston Dynamics' Atlas can move swiftly, but the latter can perform more complex tasks, such as precisely moving objects. That is certainly a skill many of our clients are looking for,' said Aron Kisdi, managing director at Autodiscovery. 'The ability to do simple tasks like moving strange-shaped or heavy objects from one location to another in the factory is useful for our clients,' he said. 'Unitree platforms don't have the software capability out of the box, and we need to implement this specifically for the client whenever we find a new deployment. Boston Dynamics is ahead of this.' Kisdi said his company not only sells Chinese robots but also helps Chinese manufacturers understand the needs of European customers, enabling them to improve their research and development (R&D). 'We are increasingly talking to end users who don't have a robotics lab but want a functional robot in their facility doing useful things,' he said. 'By the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027, we will have Unitree-based platforms with improved software that can go straight to clients.' Atlas is not yet available for sale. Its production cost is estimated to be between US$500,000 and $1 million. Unitree's G1 robot, which made global headlines in the world's first robotic kickboxing match in Hangzhou last month, is priced at only $16,000. 'I wouldn't categorize Chinese and US robots as low-end or high-end, but they are in different parts of the value chain,' Liu said. 'China is leading the hardware, manufacturing and design. We see all sorts of robots manufactured and designed in China, which are second to none. You won't be able to find this level of variety, quality, value for money or cost anywhere.' 'In a humanoid robot, 40 to 60% of its parts can be sourced from the supply chain of electric vehicles. China is very well developed in electric vehicles, and it's having an advantage,' she added. At the Humanoids Summit, held in London on May 29-30, Unitree displayed an H1 robot without turning it on, while Kingston University used a Unitree G1 robot to demonstrate some simple movements. EnduX demonstrated LimX's TRON1, a biped robot that can maintain balance on rough terrains. Booster Robotics, a Beijing-based company established in 2023, stole the show with its T1 robot playing football and performing with a human dancer. 'As a startup, we have to differentiate our products. We want to make something robust to ensure our products don't break that much.'
