Oklahoma QB John Mateer denies betting on sports, calls Venmo descriptions ‘inside jokes'
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer called the descriptions of payments that reference sports betting on his Venmo account 'inside jokes' and denied ever betting on college football or other sports in a statement released Tuesday afternoon. 'The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false,' Mateer's statement read. 'My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends. I have never bet on sports. I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo transactions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling.' — John Mateer (@John_Mateer4) August 12, 2025 Screenshots and a video of transactions for a Venmo account in Mateer's name began spreading on social media on Monday night. Two payments from Nov. 20, 2022 were sent to a Richard Roaten and captioned 'Sports gambling,' with one referencing the USC-UCLA football game that took place the day prior. The Venmo page went private later on Monday night. Advertisement Mateer played with twin brother offensive linemen Landon and Luke Roaten at Washington State, and the three were in the same 2022 recruiting class. Landon is a middle name; his first name is Richard. That is also the name of their father, according to a family page. 'OU Athletics provides ongoing education to its student-athletes, coaches, and staff on matters related to sports gambling,' Oklahoma's athletic department said in a statement. 'The department utilizes ProhiBet, which is an industry-standard service offering comprehensive monitoring of sports gambling activities. OU takes any allegations of gambling seriously and works closely with the NCAA in any situations of concern. OU Athletics is unaware of any NCAA investigation and has no reason to believe there is one pending.' Mateer transferred to Oklahoma this offseason, following Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, and is ranked by The Athletic as the No. 1 impact transfer heading into the 2025 season. The Sooners have high expectations for this season after an ambitious retooling in the wake of a 6-7 record in 2024. Oklahoma hosts Football Championship Subdivision opponent Illinois State in Week 1, then preseason No. 14 Michigan in Week 2. The expansion of the legalization of sports betting in recent years has created friction with NCAA rules that ban athletes and coaches from betting on sports. More than two dozen athletes at Iowa and Iowa State were ensnared in a 2023 gambling sting from which many lost eligibility, even though many of the criminal charges were later dropped. Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers lost his full eligibility and admitted in a plea agreement that he bet on an Iowa State football game while on the team. Under president Charlie Baker, the NCAA has slowly pulled back on sports gambling-related discipline for athletes, progressively lessening the penalties depending on the situation. In June, the Division I Council introduced a proposal that allowed college athletes to bet on pro sports where legal but continued the ban on college sports betting. — The Athletic's Bruce Feldman contributed reporting. 2027 4-star OT out of Tyler, Texas has committed to Texas A&M
Texas A&M's 2027 recruiting class already includes four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson, who became the first commit in the cycle, and possesses all the traits to be the Aggies' next starting quarterback in the near future. Coach Mike Elko and his staff are on quite a heater, landing 27 commits in the 2026 class, and have now secured a commitment from one of the top offensive tackles in the 2027 class. On Tuesday afternoon, it was revealed that four-star OT DeMarrion Johnson out of Tyler, Texas, has committed to Texas A&M over several blue-blood programs, including Alabama and Florida. Johnson has been the starting left tackle since his 2023 freshman season, which is a clear sign that he is destined for great things at the next level. Already a refined run blocker, utilizing his athleticism and 6'7", 300-pound frame, O-line coach Adam Cushing has continued to develop strong relationships with some of the top offensive line prospects in every cycle, resulting in six offensive line signees in the 2025 class. Right now, the future at left tackle could be 2025 five-star freshman tackle Lamont Rogers, but that is still up for debate given his position versatility. Still, knowing that senior left tackle Trey Zuhn III will be departing after the 2025 season, landing Johnson this early in the process prepares the staff for the future. Johnson's commitment continues to prove that Texas A&M remains one of the top landing spots for offensive line development. According to 247Sports, Johnson is currently positioned as the 135th-ranked prospect in the class, the 12th-ranked tackle, and the 24th-ranked prospect in Texas. Overrated or underrated? Paul Finebaum weighs in on Alabama football's preseason ranking
Alabama football is looking to bounce back following a 2024 season that saw the Crimson Tide lose four games for the first time since Nick Saban's first year in Tuscaloosa in 2007. After going 9-4 a year ago, Alabama is ranked No. 8 in both the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 poll entering 2025. According to longtime ESPN college football voice Paul Finebaum, the Crimson Tide are underrated entering Year 2 under coach Kalen DeBoer. Finebaum joined fellow ESPN college football analyst Heather Dinich on Tuesday's edition of "Get Up" and told Dinich and host Mike Greenberg that Alabama was ranked too low. "Don't be too shocked by this, Greeny, but Ohio State is too high and Heather, calm down, Alabama is too low," Finebaum said. "I really think Alabama is a serious national championship contender." It's easy to see why Finebaum is high on Alabama. Even with a first-year starter at quarterback in Ty Simpson, the Crimson Tide return a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. Ryan Williams, Germie Bernard and Isaiah Horton lead one of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the nation. Jam Miller returns at tailback with another year of experience under his belt, and with Kadyn Proctor leading the way up front, PFF (Pro Football Focus) ranked Alabama with the best offensive line in the nation entering 2025. Alabama's defense features elite pass rushers in LT Overton and Tim Keenan, plus linebacker Deontae Lawson and a secondary that's widely seen as one of the best units in the country with cornerbacks Domani Jackson and Zabien Brown, and safeties Keon Sabb and Bray Hubbard. The Crimson Tide open the season at Florida State at Tallahassee's Doak Campbell Stadium on Aug. 30. The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on ABC. The Seminoles are unranked in the preseason top 25 polls. Paul Finebaum calls Ohio State 'overrated' entering 2025 Finebaum expanded on his thoughts that Ryan Day's Buckeyes (No. 2 Coaches Poll, No. 3 AP) were ranked too high coming off their national championship season a year ago. "I don't get Ohio State at all, Greeny," Finebaum said Tuesday. "I know they won the national championship last year. That has nothing to do with it. They don't have the same team, and that national championship hangover is going to get to them. We'll see that in about two and a half weeks when Texas gets up there and walks out of that stadium a winner." Ohio State hosts the Texas in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup on Aug. 30 in Columbus. Finebaum said recently that he believes Texas with Arch Manning at quarterback will win the national championship this season.
