FIR against BJP leader, kin of Ex-PM Chandrashekhar's son, for threatening Dalit scholar
A BJP leader closely associated with former prime minister Chandrashekhar's son Neeraj Shekhar has been booked for allegedly threatening a Dalit research scholar from Lucknow University, police said on Tuesday (June 10, 2025).
According to police, the FIR was lodged late Monday (June 9, 2025) night at Ubhaon Police Station on the complaint of Deepak Kannaujia, a native of Turtipar village.
Police said that in his complaint, Mr. Kannaujia, a scholar at the Lucknow University, alleged that BJP leader Alok Singh called him on May 21 and abused him and threatened to kill him.
"Record this conversation if you want. I am not afraid of the administration or the law and order in Uttar Pradesh," Alok Singh said, according to the complaint.
BJP's Bilthara Road area president Arun Kant Tiwari confirmed that Alok Singh is affiliated with the BJP and is a close relative of Neeraj Shekhar.
Mr. Kannaujia alleged that Alok Singh had a longstanding political enmity with his family.
He said his father, Kamlesh Kannaujia, died of a heart attack on October 31 last year due to the stress caused by repeated harassment. He said he was afraid Alok Singh might get his mother, who lives alone in the village, killed.
Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh told PTI on Tuesday that an audio clip related to the incident had recently gone viral on social media.
A preliminary inquiry was conducted by Rasra Circle Officer Alok Gupta, after which Alok Singh was booked under sections 352 (intentional insult) and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the BNS, and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Commoners to politicians, all join in to celebrate last Bada Mangal
Faith was served hot on the city streets as everybody from commoners to politicians soaked in the Bada Mangal festivities on Tuesday. While some distributed food, water and juices, others organised unique bhandaras. Abdul Saboor, founder of the foundation said that while there is an abundance of food for people on Bada Mangal, we distributed towels and water for those who work hard under scorching summer heat. 'The towels will help those doing tedious work by preventing them from getting heat strokes for the entire summer season,' said Saboor. A bhandara with tree saplings was organised outside UP Sangeet Natak Akademi by Repertwahr Foundation to promote green cover and importance of plantation.

At foundation day events, rival NCP factions rule out reunion
Pune: Leaders of both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) — led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar — on Tuesday indicated that there is no immediate scope for a reunion between the two camps, as they marked the party's 26th foundation day at separate events in Pune. The statements came amid growing political buzz over a possible merger in the run-up to crucial local body elections in Maharashtra. In its May ruling, the Supreme Court directed the state government to conduct long-pending civic polls — including for 29 municipal corporations and several municipal councils — within four months. The elections are expected to take place by September. At the NCP event in Pune's Balewadi stadium, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar avoided giving a definitive answer on the merger issue, saying such decisions are taken by top leaders, not by party workers or junior leaders. State NCP chief Sunil Tatkare was more categorical. 'There is no such proposal,' he said when asked about the possibility of the two factions coming together again. Tatkare maintained that the decision to join the NDA was a collective one taken in the interest of the people. 'It was not Ajit Pawar's personal decision. From 2014, there were several moments when the (then united) party considered joining the BJP-led alliance, only to change its mind at the last minute. In 2023, we finally joined hands with the NDA for the welfare of the people, without compromising on our secular ideology,' he said. Ajit also defended his faction's decision to be part of the BJP-Shiv Sena government. 'We are not saints who will stay in the opposition just to protest. We want to work for the people,' he said. At the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) event at Balgandharva auditorium, party chief Sharad Pawar acknowledged that last year's split had shaken the organisation but praised the workers who remained with the party. 'We never imagined that the party would split, but it did. Still, you continued the work with determination,' he told them. Without naming his nephew, he said, 'Some people chose a different path and embraced another ideology. I do not want to dwell on it today, but the ones who stayed back did so because they believed in the party's core values.' Responding to questions about a possible reunion, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule sidestepped the issue. 'I have not had the time to discuss internal matters with party leaders or even my own family over the past 15 days,' she said. Sule recently led a multi-party delegation to several countries following Operation Sindoor. Sharad also cautioned against dwelling on who left and who stayed. 'If we remain united and work for the common people, we will face no problems,' he said. He reiterated that the coming elections would bring a different outcome and signalled that the party was preparing to fight the local polls with renewed vigour. While both parties played down the possibility of reuniting, insiders in both camps admit that the real test of strength will come during the civic polls, where they are expected to go head-to-head in several key urban centres.

Congress top brass assures state unit of no intervention in stampede probe
Days after the June 4 stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives, the Congress high command on Tuesday assured Karnataka's leadership that it will not intervene in the ongoing judicial investigation into the incident. Meanwhile the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its decision to hold a series of protests from June 13 against the Congress-led state government. At a meeting in New Delhi, chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar briefed the party's high command — including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi — on the measures taken by the state government in the wake of the tragedy that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. After the meeting, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal told reporters that the leadership was briefed about the stampede and the government's response. 'We also discussed the current political situation, including the tragic incident that happened in Bengaluru. CM and PCC president briefed the leadership about the incident and the action taken by the government afterwards. We are concerned about every single life. We didn't want to get involved already, a judicial probe has been ordered, but we want the probe to be completed in a fixed tenure,' he said. Venugopal also underscored the party's decision to refrain from interfering in the probe process. 'Certainly, we are very much concerned about every human life. We are the party that believes every life matters more. An unfortunate incident happened. The government of Karnataka has already ordered a judicial enquiry to find out what exactly occurred,' he said. 'During the course of the judicial enquiry, the party does not want to delve into the nitty-gritty of the issue. But, generally, the party has clearly viewed that there should be a clear-cut pro-people attitude on this as well,' he added. Siddaramaiah later confirmed that two issues were highlighted in the meeting: the caste census and the stampede incident. 'The steps taken by the government after the stampede — judicial inquiry, interrogation by a retired High Court judge, suspension of police and intelligence officers, etc. — were explained to the high command,' he said. Meanwhile, the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a series of protests from June 13, starting with a rally at Freedom Park in Bengaluru, followed by a march to the chief minister's residence. Further demonstrations are planned in all assembly constituencies on June 16. 'About 15,000 to 20,000 party workers, people who are angry with the government and families of the deceased will take part in the protest,' said BJP state president BY Vijayendra. He alleged that the tragedy resulted from poor planning and a power struggle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, who, according to him, were competing to gain political mileage from RCB's title win. 'The competition between CM and deputy CM led to two separate events. After the CM planned one at the Vidhana Soudha, Shivakumar used his influence to organise another at the stadium,' Vijayendra claimed. 'Shivakumar rushed to the airport as though he himself was a champion and welcomed them, we have seen the visuals,' he added. The BJP leader further accused the government of ignoring police warnings. He cited a letter from the deputy commissioner of police (Vidhana Soudha Security), which allegedly advised against the Vidhana Soudha event. 'The government did not take the letter seriously and permission was granted, as they were eager for publicity encashing from the RCB's victory,' he said.
