Hollywood director arrested on charges of swindling Netflix out of $11M for a show that never aired
A Hollywood writer-director was arrested Tuesday on charges that he swindled $11 million from Netflix for a sci-fi show that never aired, instead steering the cash toward cryptocurrency investments and a series of lavish purchases that included a fleet of Rolls-Royces and a Ferrari.
Carl Erik Rinsch – perhaps best known for directing the film '47 Ronin' – has been charged with wire fraud and money laundering over what federal prosecutors allege was a scheme to defraud the streaming giant.
It is unclear if Rinsch has hired an attorney. Netflix declined to comment.
Prosecutors said Netflix had initially paid about $44 million to purchase an unfinished show called 'White Horse' from Rinsch, but eventually doled out another $11 million after he said he needed the additional cash to complete the show.
Rather than using the extra money to wrap up production, Rinsch quietly transferred the money to a personal brokerage account, where he made a series of failed investments that lost about half of the $11 million in two months, according to prosecutors.
The filmmaker then dumped the rest of the money into the cryptocurrency market, which proved to be a profitable move, with Rinsch eventually transferring the earnings into a personal bank account, according to an indictment.
From there, Rinsch spent about $10 million on personal expenses and luxury items in a spending spree that, according to prosecutors, included about $1.8 million on credit card bills; $1 million on lawyers to sue Netflix for more money; $3.7 million on furniture and antiques; $2.4 million for five Rolls-Royces and one Ferrari; and $652,000 on watches and clothes.
Rinsch, 47, was arrested in West Hollywood and is set to appear in a federal court in California later Tuesday, authorities said. His indictment was filed in New York.

Shameless fans buzzing as East Lancashire star make hilarious TikTok debut
Shameless fans are celebrating after one of the show's most iconic stars, Alice Barry, made her hilarious debut on TikTok. The Burnley actress is known for playing Lillian Tyler, a fan-favourite character who owned a brothel on Shameless' Chatsworth estate. Alice's first video has, at the time of writing, amassed more than 500,000 views. In it, she gets into the character of Lillian as she gets 'set up on TikTok'. In the video the former St Mary Magdalene's RC Primary School pupil said: 'TikTok!? We aren't going to get any money out of TikTok. I thought it was OnlyFans.' As well as skits, she has also answered questions left by fans. One TikTok user asked her how she landed the Shameless job. Alice, who still lives in Burnley, said: 'When I went for the audition, it was for a nun. We did the audition and it went well. 'Paul Abbott [creator of Shameless] said 'you were very good but you haven't got the part... but I would like you to come in on Shameless as Lillian, I think you'd be alright'.' Alice Barry (Image: TikTok/@alicebarryofficial) Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Alice said she was surprised that her TikTok account amassed more than 41,000 followers. She said: 'I had been asked to join TikTok for a long while now and I said no – eventually I gave in and said I would give it a go. 'I didn't realise that I now have more than 41,000 followers I did not expect to get that many followers. 'All of the comments have been so nice, telling me I haven't changed one bit [since starring in Shameless]. Another said I am the Queen of TikTok and Queen of Shameless. 'I can easily get back into the character of Lillian at any moment.' Alice, a former Coal Clough Secondary School pupil, said it's great that so many people still love the Channel 4 show despite ending in 2013, adding that it may have garnered a younger fanbase since being added to Netflix. Alice, who grew up in Haslam Street in Gannow Top, has promised fans more Shameless content and skits in the future. She said: 'It is still on and people are still watching it on Netflix. It's great that the show still has such a strong fan base. 'Wherever I go people still recognise me. If I go for a night out, people still want photographs, which I don't mind. 'I was on Shameless for all of those years, and it was a really good experience.' As well as TikTok, Alice has also launched a Cameo page, where fans can request personalised video messages. Alice, who is in her 70s, said she also has meet and greets planned, including one on June 28 at The Heartbeat Vehicle Rally in Goathland. She said: 'I already have four gigs on Cameo [and I think that is because of] TikTok – they keep coming in.'

3 underrated Netflix movies you should watch this weekend (June 13-15)
Netflix is filled with movies that are worth your time, but the trouble is that many of them are hard to find. If you're trying to discern which movies you should actually care about, we've got you covered. We've pulled together a list of three great movies that you can watch this weekend. It's hot outside; take a break and enjoy one of these excellent titles: Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Town (2010) Ben Affleck came into full bloom as a director with The Town. Set in his native Boston, the movie follows a group of devil-may-care bank robbers posed with a crisis. Affleck, who also stars in the film, falls in love with a bank teller at one of their jobs. As Affleck's character tries to ease his way out of his criminal life, he finds that his best friend becomes erratic. Featuring a tremendous supporting turn from Jeremy Renner as well as some stunning set pieces, The Town is the kind of crime thriller most people wish there were more of. You can watch The Town on Netflix. Barbarian (2022) One of the most inventive horror movies of the past 10 years, Barbarian is almost literally a thrill ride. It's a movie whose twists and turns are almost impossible to predict, making it difficult to describe. The movie starts out with a relatively simple premise. A woman and a man have discovered that they both booked the same Airbnb, and they decide to stay there together. There's some romantic tension but also something unsettling going on. The rest is best left up to the viewer. Suffice it to say, though, that this movie is stylish, surprising, and a genuine delight. You can watch Barbarian on Netflix. Dune: Part Two (2024) Although there was plenty to admire in Dune, it wasn't until Part Two that director Denis Villeneuve's full vision was realized. The movie follows its central character as he wrestles with his growing messiah complex and desire for revenge against those who destroyed his family. Filled with great performances, Dune: Part Two features the budget to immerse you in a foreign world. Dune was thought to be unadaptable. Thankfully, it turned out not to be, and we got a genuinely thrilling version that paid attention to even the most minute of details. You can watch Dune: Part Two on Netflix.
