WEAPONS Director Zach Cregger Reveals Two Possible Backstories for Aunt Gladys — GeekTyrant

Geek Tyrant2 days ago
If you've already seen Weapons , you know that Aunt Gladys is one of the creepiest horror villains in recent memory. But where did she come from? According to Zach Cregger, the director behind this year's massive horror hit, there's more than one answer to that question.
Weapons stormed into theaters and pulled in $43 million in its opening weekend and quickly climbing past $80 million globally. With a cast that includes Amy Madigan, Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Benedict Wong, and Alden Ehrenreich, the film has become one of 2025's biggest box office surprises.
At the center of all the terror is Amy Madigan's character, Aunt Gladys. On the surface, she seems like just another sweet old clown lady. But fans quickly find out that she's a witch who preys on missing children to heal herself. Her true age is never confirmed in the film, adding to her unsettling mystique.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Cregger broke down the two possible origin stories he gave Madigan to work with. 'I was like, 'You can pick one of these two,'' he said.
The first version is more grounded in dark realism. 'She had to adopt this methodology that she uses out of a place of emergency to keep herself alive. I won't say any more than that.'
The second version pushes deeper into the supernatural. Aunt Gladys isn't human at all, just something trying to pass as one. 'That's an interesting way to think about it. I like that a lot,' Cregger added. She wears exaggerated makeup and a red wig to mimic a human appearance, but something always feels… off.
And there's another layer too. Cregger drew a parallel between Gladys' twisted magic and real-world struggles like addiction. 'This foreign substance comes in and it changes everyone's behavior.
'The house becomes a scary place. You can go to school and act like everything's cool, and then you come home and you hide from a zombie parent. That felt so real to me.'
Whether you see Aunt Gladys as a sick old woman clinging to life with dark magic or as a monstrous entity trying to imitate humanity, one thing's clear. Weapons has given horror fans a villain they won't forget anytime soon.

'Property of Sophie Cunningham': How a fan got Fever star to troll a rival player with her autograph

Brady Pettigrew isn't a collector of sports cards or memorabilia. The Indiana Fever fan just wanted to have some fun with Sophie Cunningham, one of his favorite players. At a fan event in Indianapolis last weekend, Pettigrew waited in line with many others to get the star WNBA guard's autograph. When his turn came, the 39-year-old resident of nearby Anderson, Ind., placed a sports card in front of Cunningham for her to sign. Read more: Caitlin Clark pushed to ground, and does some shoving of her own, during testy win over Sun Only it wasn't a Cunningham card. It was a Jacy Sheldon card. Not only did Pettigrew want Cunningham to sign the card of one of her on-court rivals, he wanted her to place her autograph directly under a phrase his sister, Tristen Pettigrew, had inscribed on the collectible: "Property of:" Cunningham and Sheldon were involved in a dust-up during a June 17 game in Indianapolis, when Sheldon was a member of the Connecticut Sun (she was traded to the Washington Mystics last week). Late in the game, with the Fever up by 17, Sheldon made a steal and was taken down hard by Cunningham — a move many viewed as payback after Sheldon poked Indiana superstar Caitlin Clark in the eye during a play in the third quarter. Pettigrew told The Times he was "a little nervous" about how Cunningham might react to his unusual request. But at the same time, he said, he knew from following Cunningham on social media that she is "a little edgy" and has "a good sense of humor." "I was just like, if there's anybody that would do this, it would be Sophie," Pettigrew said. A video of Pettigrew's interaction with Cunningham, filmed by his sister, shows that his assumption was correct. After he places the card in front of her, Cunningham takes a second to register what she is seeing, then bursts into laughter and immediately autographs the card so it reads, "Property of: Sophie Cunningham." "She said that when she first looked at the card, she just thought it was a card of herself, you know, blond, white chick," Pettigrew said, "and so she didn't realize until she read what the inscription was, and was like, 'What?'" He added: "If I have a chance to make her laugh, that's better than just taking up some picture where she looks all pretty like everybody else does, or get a jersey signed or something,. I was like, well, if I can make her laugh, maybe I can make a tedious, boring situation for her a little more fun. And she obliged.' Cunningham can be heard in the video laughing and exclaiming, "She's the problem!" While some have assumed the comment was aimed toward Sheldon, Pettigrew said he thinks Cunningham was actually referring to her mother, Paula, who was also at the event and had encouraged Pettigrew to make the unusual request of her daughter. "If you listen really close right when the video starts, I'm walking up and I say to Sophie, 'I just want you to know I got your mom's approval for this,' and I set the card down," Pettigrew said. "And she looks at it and starts cracking up. And she's like, 'See, she's the problem.' ... I'm fairly certain based on the conversation she's actually calling her mom the problem, like laughing about the situation of her telling me to do it.' Pettigrew said he has gotten offers of up to $2,000 for the card, but it's not for sale — although he could change his mind for the right price. But I definitely don't have any intention of trying to make that happen. If it naturally happens, I mean, everything's got a price.' Cunningham and Sheldon will be on the court together again Friday when the Fever hosts the Mystics at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indiana. Pettigrew actually has other plans for the evening. However, he said, 'If Sophie hits me up and and says, 'Hey, we got courtside seats for you,' I think I could probably show up to the concert a little late,' he joked. Friday Music Guide: New Music From Cardi B, Chance The Rapper, Dijon and More

Billboard's Friday Music Guide serves as a handy guide to this Friday's most essential releases — the key music that everyone will be talking about today, and that will be dominating playlists this weekend and beyond. This week, Cardi B has a message for the competition, Chance The Rapper comes full circle and Dijon blows up. Check out all of this week's picks below: More from Billboard Sophie Ellis-Bextor On 'Murder on the Dancefloor' Craze and Why It Was 'Ballsy' To Name New Album 'Perimenipop' With Her Debut Album, JADE Says 'There's Nothing Holding Me Back' From Spilling Truth Susan Boyle Tells Oasis 'You've Made This Girl's Day' After Liam Gallagher Shouts Her Out During Edinburgh Show Cardi B, 'Imaginary Playerz' 'Fixin' y'all mouth to talk fashion with me / I'm the one who showed these girls what fashion could be,' Cardi B spits near the end of 'Imaginary Playerz,' a viper strike against those who doubted her longevity and other women in hip-hop trying to come for her crown. With Cardi's long-awaited sophomore album just weeks away, this single is a timely reminder of her dominant wordplay and cutthroat approach; the expectations are officially sky-high. Chance The Rapper, Chance The Rapper hit the mainstream with the force of a freight train in the mid-2010s, and then his 2019 album, The Big Day, zapped his momentum; Star Line, the long-awaited follow-up, boasts plenty of A-list guest stars — Lil Wayne, Young Thug and Jazmine Sullivan among them — but also serves as a back-to-basics project from an artist who blew up thanks to fiercely beloved mixtapes, combining personal reinvention with scrappy artistry. Dijon, In the four years since Dijon released debut album Absolutely in 2021, his influence in modern R&B (and popular music in general) has grown by leaps and bounds — and with follow-up full-length Baby, he returns with a lush, lo-fi set of rhythmic gems, to a much bigger audience waiting for them, and now has the opportunity to position himself as a full-blown commercial force. Kaytranada, A press release for Ain't No Damn Way! describes the project as 'an intentional return to Kaytranada's dance music roots' — which, if you like to move whatsoever, is pretty damn exciting, considering that the producer is absolutely elite when it comes to cooking up dance floor-fillers. Opener 'Space Invader' sets the euphoric tone immediately, and by 'Target Joint' in the fourth slot, your shoulders will be exhausted from wiggling too hard. Jordan Davis, Country star Jordan Davis' catalog contains a reliability that has made him into a singer-songwriter with a dedicated Nashville fan base, and on Learn the Hard Way, he continues his streak of celebrating the simple pleasures of life with mid-tempo tracks built around his steady tone and shrugging off too much production flash (although the occasional guest star, Carly Pearce and Marcus King, does drop by). Olivia Dean, 'Man I Need' Anyone paying attention to Olivia Dean's recent string of singles understands why anticipation keeps ratcheting up for the London singer-songwriter's sophomore album, The Art of Loving: 'Man I Need' once again demonstrates her natural gift for immediate melodies, but her modern riff on classic rhythmic pop is snappier than ever, to the point where you'll be humming along midway through your first listen. Editor's Pick: Conan Gray, Wishbone is Conan Gray's fourth studio album, and sounds like the one he's been working toward his entire career: once again working with Dan Nigro but handling much of the songwriting on his own, the pop artist fully arrives with a mix of hushed confessionals and brash arena-fillers, with both styles boasting the evocative lyricism that's made him a star. Best of Billboard Chart Rewind: In 1989, New Kids on the Block Were 'Hangin' Tough' at No. 1 Janet Jackson's Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hits H.E.R. & Chris Brown 'Come Through' to No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart Solve the daily Crossword

First Plot Details Revealed for Zach Cregger's RESIDENT EVIL Horror Movie — GeekTyrant

The first official plot details for Zach Cregger's highly anticipated Resident Evil movie are finally here, giving fans a glimpse into how the director behind Barbarian plans to tackle the legendary survival horror franchise. Shared by insider Daniel Richtman on social media, the logline introduces us to Austin Abrams' character, Bryan, a laid-back organ courier whose simple delivery job takes a sinister turn. 'Bryan (Austin Abrams), a laid-back organ courier, is sent on a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. En route through a snowy mountain road, he accidentally hits a strange woman with his car. 'She survives—but something is very wrong. As he tries to help, Bryan stumbles into a full-blown outbreak involving horrifying tentacle-based mutations and bio-engineered monstrosities.' It's a fresh and intense setup that hints at a return to the series' horror roots. While story details beyond the logline are still under wraps, Cregger isn't tackling this alone. He co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, who previously worked on Army of the Dead and John Wick: Chapter 4 , promising a script that blends horror and high-stakes action. Cregger previously talked about the movie saying: 'I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I'm telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.' He emphasized that while his film exists in the Resident Evil universe, it will focus on an entirely different set of characters. 'It is obedient to the lore of the games, it's just a different story,' he explained. 'I'm not going to tell Leon's story, because Leon's story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.' So far, Abrams, known for Euphoria and Weapons , is the only confirmed cast member. However, there are reports that Mikey Madison is in talks for the lead role. Resident Evil has had its fair share of big-screen adaptations, with seven previous films dating back to 2002, most famously starring Milla Jovovich. With Cregger at the helm, though, this reboot looks to bring a darker, more grotesque vision to the franchise, much like what he delivered with Weapons and Barbarian . Cregger, who first made his mark with the sketch comedy group The Whitest Kids U' Know , made a dramatic shift into horror with Barbarian in 2022. That film became a breakout hit, cementing his status as one of horror's most exciting new voices. This upcoming Resident Evil film is shaping up to be something wild and unpredictable. If you're into mutated monstrosities, snowy night terrors, and creepy hospitals, it looks like Cregger's got you covered.
