The first official plot details for Zach Cregger's highly anticipated Resident Evil movie are finally here, giving fans a glimpse into how the director behind Barbarian plans to tackle the legendary survival horror franchise.
Shared by insider Daniel Richtman on social media, the logline introduces us to Austin Abrams' character, Bryan, a laid-back organ courier whose simple delivery job takes a sinister turn.
'Bryan (Austin Abrams), a laid-back organ courier, is sent on a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. En route through a snowy mountain road, he accidentally hits a strange woman with his car.
'She survives—but something is very wrong. As he tries to help, Bryan stumbles into a full-blown outbreak involving horrifying tentacle-based mutations and bio-engineered monstrosities.'
It's a fresh and intense setup that hints at a return to the series' horror roots. While story details beyond the logline are still under wraps, Cregger isn't tackling this alone. He co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, who previously worked on Army of the Dead and John Wick: Chapter 4 , promising a script that blends horror and high-stakes action.
Cregger previously talked about the movie saying:
'I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I'm telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.'
He emphasized that while his film exists in the Resident Evil universe, it will focus on an entirely different set of characters.
'It is obedient to the lore of the games, it's just a different story,' he explained. 'I'm not going to tell Leon's story, because Leon's story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.'
So far, Abrams, known for Euphoria and Weapons , is the only confirmed cast member. However, there are reports that Mikey Madison is in talks for the lead role.
Resident Evil has had its fair share of big-screen adaptations, with seven previous films dating back to 2002, most famously starring Milla Jovovich. With Cregger at the helm, though, this reboot looks to bring a darker, more grotesque vision to the franchise, much like what he delivered with Weapons and Barbarian .
Cregger, who first made his mark with the sketch comedy group The Whitest Kids U' Know , made a dramatic shift into horror with Barbarian in 2022. That film became a breakout hit, cementing his status as one of horror's most exciting new voices.
