Google has agreed to pay a fine of 55 million Australian dollars ($36 million) for entering into anticompetitive agreements with Australia's two largest telecom operators that restricted the installation of rival search engines on certain smartphones, the US tech giant and the Australian competition regulator confirmed.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said in a statement that it has initiated proceedings in the Federal Court against Google's Singapore-based Asia Pacific division. The court will now determine whether the proposed AU$55 million ($36 million) penalty is appropriate. Why Is Google Fined?
Under the anticompetitive agreements, which were in place for 15 months until March 2021, Telstra and Optus only pre-installed Google Search on Android phones sold to customers. Other search engines were excluded. In return, the telcos received a share of the advertisement revenue Google generated from those customers.
Google accepted that the agreements were likely to have the effect of 'substantially lessening competition,' the commission said.
Google has also signed a court-enforceable undertaking that commits the company to removing certain pre-installation and default search engine restrictions from its contracts with Android phone manufacturers and telcos, the commission said.
The tech company said in a statement: 'We're pleased to resolve the ACCC's concerns, which involved provisions that haven't been in our commercial agreements for some time.' What Australian Authorities Say On Anticompetitive Agreements?
Commissioner chair Gina-Cass Gottlieb said: 'Conduct that restricts competition is illegal in Australia because it usually means less choice, higher costs or worse service for consumers.'
'Importantly, these changes come at a time when AI search tools are revolutionising how we search for information, creating new competition,' Cass-Gottlieb added.
Last year, Telstra, Optus and their smaller rival TPG agreed to court-enforceable undertakings with the commission that they would not renew or make similar deals with Google to limit search options.

"We request that the trading halt be with immediate effect to allow KLR time to respond to ASX queries on the trading of KLR securities on 18 August 2025 and the recent disclosures in respect of KLR on the ASX announcement platform. KLR requests the trading halt until the earlier of responding to ASX queries or commencement of trading on 20 August 2025," the company had said in a letter to the exchanges. Jupiter to set up solar cell unit in Butibori
Nagpur : The Vidarbha region is steadily emerging as a sustainable energy hub, with more companies showing interest in setting up units—particularly in Nagpur. After Avadaa and Waaree, West Bengal-based Jupiter International Limited is planning to establish a solar cell manufacturing facility in the additional Butibori industrial area. The company is looking to invest ₹15,000 crore in the sustainable energy sector, and its Nagpur unit is expected to further accelerate the region's growth. Apart from Jupiter, JSW Group and Anil Ambani-led Reliance Industries are also exploring solar panel manufacturing facilities in Nagpur, according to sources. The state industries department is already in talks with Jupiter International to set up a solar cell manufacturing unit, and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) is likely to be signed soon. If finalised, this will be the company's first plant in Maharashtra. While Avadaa Group has begun operations, Waaree Group is set to hold a groundbreaking ceremony within the next fortnight. Jupiter International, meanwhile, already operates a solar photovoltaic cell manufacturing unit at Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, with an overall capacity of 800 MW, including a 500 MW mono PERC solar cell facility. As per its website, the company aims to become a 10 GW vertically integrated solar power entity. In Nagpur, the company is expected to be allotted 250 acres of land by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). At the same time, the state government is in discussions with a defence manufacturer planning to invest ₹12,000 crore in a drone manufacturing facility. An MoU with the company is also expected soon, sources added. Much like renewable energy, Vidarbha is also emerging as an aviation hub. Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RAL), led by Anil Ambani, has announced plans to manufacture Falcon Jets at its joint venture facility with France's Dassault. Ammunition maker Solar Group has also proposed setting up a unit to produce unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). "The influx of multiple industries in the region is expected to boost ancillarisation, ultimately benefiting local MSMEs," said Nitin Lonkar, president of the Butibori Manufacturers Association (BMA).

Recalling the incident, Sachdeva said the management had instructed him to remain 'cold' and detached while breaking the news. He wasn't allowed to show sympathy or even say 'I'm sorry,' since it could be seen as taking responsibility. Instead, he had to stick to a script: 'Please submit your ID card and laptop. HR will reach out for formalities. Your system's access will be disabled shortly.' What made the ordeal unbearable, he wrote, were the faces he had to look into while delivering the message. One that still haunts him is that of a single mother, seated across from him, trying to hold back tears. 'I saw the tear form at the corner of her eyes. And then, snap, it dropped.' Sachdeva clarified that he had no part in deciding who would be laid off; he was simply the one chosen to deliver the decision. But that did little to ease the weight of the task.
