Burnley in line to join multi-club scene after owner bids for stake in Espanyol

Yahooa day ago

Burnley's owner is in advanced negotiations about buying a stake in the Spanish club Espanyol in what would become the Premier League's latest multi-club operation.
Espanyol would be the second club owned by ALK Capital, the investment company operated by Burnley's owner, Alan Pace, whose website says its ambition is to establish a multi-club sports platform. The American businessman previously owned Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer before selling up to buy Burnley, paying £170m for 84% of the club in December 2020.

ALK Capital has held talks with several Spanish clubs about a potential investment over the past few months and an offer is understood to have been made for Espanyol, the second club in Barcelona. The size and price of the proposal is unclear.
Espanyol are owned by the Chinese company Rastar Group, which specialises in toy car production, and have been on the market since they were relegated from La Liga two years ago, with a valuation of about £110m. They were promoted via the playoffs the following season and stayed in the top flight, finishing 14th.
Burnley's investment would give them preferential access to young European and South American players, and is part of a growing trend of Premier League clubs trying to invest in Spain.

The country's longstanding ties with South America, proximity to north Africa and liberal player registration rules make it a natural entry point for youth talent from outside the EU. Many South American players obtain dual citizenship in Spain, making them easier to sell on to other European clubs.
City Football Group was the first Premier League-linked group to buy a Spanish club with its 2017 purchase of Girona, who were subsequently promoted to La Liga and qualified for the Champions League for the first time by finishing third in 2024. Last year Aston Villa's owner, V Sports, bought a stake in Real Unión, who were relegated from the third tier in May. This year Brentford's owner, Matthew Benham, bought Mérida AD, who are in the third division.
Liverpool's owner, Fenway Sports Group, had talks this season about buying a stake in the second division club Málaga but has not completed the transaction.
Multi-club ownership has exploded in recent years, although Burnley's proposed investment in Espanyol comes at a time when the model is facing scrutiny because Crystal Palace could be prohibited by Uefa from taking part in the Europa League because their co-owner John Textor is the majority shareholder at Lyon, who have also qualified. In 2020 fewer than 60 clubs were part of multi-club operations but that number is now more than 400.
Burnley declined to comment.

Bayern Munich consider summer move for Cody Gakpo

The Bundesliga club is actively pursuing a new left winger to strengthen that area of their attack ahead of the new season. Advertisement They have added Gakpo to their shortlist after recently being linked with Kaoru Mitoma and Rafael Leao. Bayern are keen to bring in more attacking quality and see Gakpo as someone who can deliver immediately. The Dutch forward has enjoyed a strong season under manager Arne Slot, helping Liverpool win the 2024–25 Premier League title. Gakpo has bagged 18 goals and seven assists in all competitions, highlighting his importance to the team. Bayern have already made contact with Gakpo Bayern sporting director Max Eberl is reportedly a fan of Gakpo and has already contacted the player regarding a potential deal. Advertisement The 26-year-old is currently under contract at Liverpool until 2028, but there he could leave if the right offer comes in. Gakpo's versatility is a major reason behind Bayern's growing interest. He can play as a left winger and as a central striker. Trump approves Nippon Steel purchase of U.S. Steel

June 14 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Friday officially giving the green light to Nippon Steel Corporation's multi-billion-dollar purchase of U.S. Steel Corporation. Trump's executive order rescinds a directive issued by former President Joe Biden that blocked the Tokyo-based steel producer's $14.9 billion purchase on national security grounds. The president had been signaling he would approve such a move, stating in May that the two steel giants would form a "planned partnership." Trump previously ordered a review of the transaction by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. "Based on the recommendation of and my review of the materials provided by CFIUS, including re-review of the prior assessment of risk, I additionally find that the threatened impairment to the national security of the United States arising as a result of the Proposed Transaction can be adequately mitigated if the conditions set forth in section 3 of this order are met," Trump wrote in the executive order. "President Trump has approved the Companies' historic partnership that will unleash unprecedented investments in steelmaking in the United States, protecting and creating more than 100,000 jobs," Pennsylvania-based U.S. Steel said in a release jointly issued with Nippon Steel. "We thank President Trump and his Administration for their bold leadership and strong support for our historic partnership. This partnership will bring a massive investment that will support our communities and families for generations to come. We look forward to putting our commitments into action to make American steelmaking and manufacturing great again." Trump's executive order requires both companies to enter into a National Security Agreement, which stipulates $11 billion in new investments must be made in the United States by 2028. That includes an already-underway project not scheduled for completion until after 2028. The United States government will also be issued a golden share as part of the NSA, giving it unique voting rights. "President Trump promised to protect American Steel and American Jobs -- and he has delivered on that promise," White House spokesperson Kush Desai told CNN in a statement. "Today's executive order ensures US Steel will remain in the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and be safeguarded as a critical element of America's national and economic security." Confirmation of the deal comes just over a week after 50% tariffs took effect on metals imported into the United States from nearly all countries. The tariffs were enacted a day after Trump signed an executive order doubling the duties on almost all imported aluminum and steel. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

Premier League football set for yet another new live streaming home

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Liverpool FC / Getty Images Quick Summary Warner Bros Discovery will reportedly split into two companies again, with different services and shows being moved around. Advertisement One confirmed outcome is that TNT Sports streaming will switch from Discovery+ to HBO Max when it launches in the UK and Ireland next year. We've had a fair few streaming homes for live Premier League football matches over the years. Amazon, BT Sport and Discovery+ have each shown games on their streaming services. And that's on top of Sky's own services, including Now. It has meant that if you're a die-hard fan who struggles to get to the games yourself, you've had to shell out for numerous paid subscriptions to follow your team on TV and online. However, it looks like we'll soon get another. Advertisement The owner of TNT Sports and Discovery+ is reportedly going through a shake-up, with the parent company Warner Bros Discovery said to be splitting again after merging just three years ago. And, as part of the split, international sports coverage will be heading to HBO Max. It's claimed that includes TNT Sports' Premier League rights. Earlier this year, TNT Sports extended its rights package with the Premier League to continue to show 52 live matches per season up to and including the 2028/29 season. They can be seen on traditional broadcast platforms (with a subscription), but are also hosted by Discovery+. But it is now said (via RXTV) that the Discovery+ streaming service is heading to a newly formed Global Networks division as part of the WBD split, along with standard live TV services, such as Quest and the Food Network. Advertisement A new Streaming & Studios business will take on HBO, HBO Max and all sports services outside of the US. A spokesperson for WBD confirmed to RXTV that TNT Sports will be part of HBO Max when it launches in the UK and Ireland in early 2026. What about Sky's Premier League coverage? Sky's Premier League coverage will be untouched by the WBD split. Indeed, it is ramping up the amount of live matches it will offer across Sky Glass, Sky Stream, Sky Q and Now to 215 from next season. That's a dramatic increase on the 128 matches it broadcast in 2024/25. Ironically though, Sky will lose exclusive rights to HBO programming from the end of 2025. It has been the home of the likes of Game of Thrones, Succession and The Last of Us for many years, but the arrival of HBO Max means those shows will be available across multiple platforms from next year. Sky has struck a deal to carry HBO Max on its TV services though, so you'll still get to see them there too.
