Minister Ponnam Prabhakar questions Kavitha's credibility on BC issues
Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar questioned the credibility of BRS MLC K. Kavitha to speak on Backward Classes (BC) issues after what he termed a decade of neglect during the BRS regime.
Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan along with MLC Dayakar, he asked, 'Did Ms. Kavitha ever raise her voice for BCs when BRS was in power? If not, what moral right does she now have.'
He also expressed his admiration for Rajya Sabha MP and BC leader R. Krishnaiah, urging him not to align with leaders who had 'ignored the weaker sections for years.' 'I speak to you as a younger brother. Let's meet the Prime Minister together. You fix the appointment, we will be there,' he said.
Mr. Ponnam Prabhakar further urged political leaders to rise above party lines for BC welfare. 'Whether it is KCR or the demons surrounding him, if anyone truly cares about BCs, let them walk with us. Let us go beyond politics for the welfare of the 56%,' he said.
He lauded the commitment of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, saying that the Congress leader was continuously raising the BC issues and bringing the nation's attention to them. 'From CM Revanth Reddy to TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, every leader in the Cabinet is clear in their resolve. The Congress is working with sincerity and not giving political colour to this issue,' he said.
He said Mr. Revanth Reddy was correcting the decade-long neglect of the BRS and the BC bill, aiming at securing socio-political empowerment was an indication of it.

Nilambur bypoll defeat: Did Pinarayi's party underplay PV Anvar factor?
Kerala's Nilambur electing Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath in the June 19 bypoll serves as a warning for chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, whose government heads for assembly elections next year with a two-term wrested Nilambur, located in Malappuram district, from the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) by a convincing margin of around 11,360 votes. The previous MLA from the seat, P.V. Anvar, who had challenged the Vijayan government by contesting as an Independent, received over 19,000 had resigned as MLA in January after facing the heat for alleging that additional DGP (director general of police) M.R. Ajithkumar was involved in gold smuggling. Ajithkumar is widely considered as an officer enjoying the trust of the Vijayan CPI(M) had fielded M. Swaraj, a youth leader with clean image. As runner-up, he polled around 66,660 votes. The loss of Nilambur reduces the LDF's strength in the legislative assembly to 98, but more importantly, it gives the Congress-led Opposition UDF (United Democratic Front) a psychological advantage in the run-up to the state polls.'We won Nilambur by a convincing margin. I thank the people for supporting me against a corrupt government that had sponsored wrongful practices to defeat me,' Shoukath told INDIA Congress is in a jubilant mood. The counting of votes on June 23 revealed the UDF had maintained lead in Nilambur municipality, governed by the CPI(M), and six other panchayats, except Kurulayi. The LDF candidate trailed in his home ground of Pothukallu by 425 votes. Even in Nilambur municipality, the performance of Swaraj was used to be a Congress stronghold, with Shoukath's father Aryadan Muhammed holding the seat uninterrupted for almost 30 years since 1987. He had also held the seat from 1977 to 1980. Anvar snatched the seat for the LDF in 2016 and retained it in many locals, Shoukath's victory indicates a build-up against the Vijayan government. 'The Nilambur bypoll verdict should be an eye-opener for the chief minister, who campaigned in the constituency for five days and showcased his governance. His campaign attracted huge crowds, but not the votes,' said Faizal Ahmed, a businessman from the LDF had underestimated the Anvar factor and failed to neutralise his clout among their cadre. A win under its belt, the UDF will now be going into the local body polls scheduled in December with added confidence. 'We had taken a position that the Pinarayi Vijayan government must go, and the people voted for us. We will not allow the government to continue with its undemocratic activities,' said the Congress's V.D. Satheesan, who is leader of the to India Today Magazine- End

BJP reiterates demand for CBI probe into Kaleshwaram project irregularities
The BJP has once again reiterated the party's demand for a CBI probe into the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) alleging that there are several corrupt practices that went into its making right from the design stage itself and later in the construction stage. Legislature party leader A. Maheshwar Reddy lead the charge pointing out that the project began with an initial estimate of ₹38,500 crore and the hike to ₹96,000 crore indicated the extent to which the BRS government had manipulated the work. Even after spending that kind of money not even one lakh acres had benefitted from the project. It all started with changing the site from Tummidihatti village to Kaleshwaram, shifting the design to pumping from gravity flow and not taking into account adequate water availability — all these issues were sufficient to go for a full fledged investigation by the CBI, he said. The BJP leader said the recent ACB raid on a senior engineer who had worked in the project and unearthing of a large amount of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income is sufficient to gauge the extent of corruption involved in the work. Mr. Reddy also accused the Congress government of not taking the project probe and even issues like the illegal phone tapping, irregularities into Mission Kakatiya, Mission Bhagiratha, power purchase deals and so on to a logical conclusion and punishing the guilty. 'Is there a secret deal between the BRS and Congress to water down the probes and allow the BRS leaders to get away scot-free,' he questioned. His party colleagues, including Sirpur Kagaznagar MLA Dr. Palvai Harish Rao, Mudhole MLA Rama Rao Patil, MLC Anji Reddy, former MLA NVSS Prabhakar, ex-MLC Gudur Narayana Reddy and others too, charged that the Congress government has been 'protecting' the KCR family by side-stepping the CBI probe demand which Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had rooted for before coming to power. Claiming that there appears to be a concerted effort to water down the Ghose Commission looking into the irrigation project irregularities, the party leaders wanted the Congress government to write a letter to the Centre seeking an investigation by the country's premier agency.

TMC wins Kaliganj bypoll; Congress-CPIM alliance and BJP see decrease in vote-share
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured a decisive victory in the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll, with party candidate Alifa Ahmed winning by a significant margin. The BJP's Ashish Ghosh came second, while Congress candidate Kabiluddin Sheikh finished third. As of the 23rd round of counting, it was seen that both the BJP and CPIM-Congress alliance's vote shares had slightly decreased from the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. TMC received around 55 percent of the vote share for the bypoll, followed by the BJP with 28 percent and the Congress with 15 percent. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC got 47.08 percent, BJP got 31.67 percent and Congress-CPIM got 18.47 percent of the vote. While the TMC had been confident of retaining the seat, the BJP focused its campaign on consolidating Hindu votes in an area where over 48 percent of the electorate belongs to minority communities. The party had invoked the Centre's Operation Sindoor and criticised what it termed TMC's 'appeasement politics'. Following the result, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her gratitude in a post on social media platform X, saying, 'People of all religions, castes, races, and walks of life in the area have blessed us immensely… I humbly express my gratitude to them… The main architects of this victory are ma-mati-manush (mother, soil, and people)… Remembering the late MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, I dedicate this victory to the motherland and people of Bengal.' Alifa Ahmed, daughter of the late TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, said, 'I got blessings from every corner of Kaliganj. I am happy.' Ahmed, 38, is a BTech graduate and works with a prominent IT firm. The seat fell vacant after her father's death in February this year. Nasiruddin Ahmed had won the Kaliganj seat in 2011, lost in 2016, and regained it in 2021. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari commented, 'I don't have the final result yet, but from what I've seen, CPIM-Congress got some support in minority areas. Our goal was to consolidate the Hindu vote, and I believe we were successful in that strategy.'
