TMC wins Kaliganj bypoll; Congress-CPIM alliance and BJP see decrease in vote-share

Indian Express23-06-2025
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured a decisive victory in the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll, with party candidate Alifa Ahmed winning by a significant margin. The BJP's Ashish Ghosh came second, while Congress candidate Kabiluddin Sheikh finished third.
As of the 23rd round of counting, it was seen that both the BJP and CPIM-Congress alliance's vote shares had slightly decreased from the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
TMC received around 55 percent of the vote share for the bypoll, followed by the BJP with 28 percent and the Congress with 15 percent. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC got 47.08 percent, BJP got 31.67 percent and Congress-CPIM got 18.47 percent of the vote.
While the TMC had been confident of retaining the seat, the BJP focused its campaign on consolidating Hindu votes in an area where over 48 percent of the electorate belongs to minority communities. The party had invoked the Centre's Operation Sindoor and criticised what it termed TMC's 'appeasement politics'.
Following the result, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her gratitude in a post on social media platform X, saying, 'People of all religions, castes, races, and walks of life in the area have blessed us immensely… I humbly express my gratitude to them… The main architects of this victory are ma-mati-manush (mother, soil, and people)… Remembering the late MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, I dedicate this victory to the motherland and people of Bengal.'
Alifa Ahmed, daughter of the late TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, said, 'I got blessings from every corner of Kaliganj. I am happy.' Ahmed, 38, is a BTech graduate and works with a prominent IT firm. The seat fell vacant after her father's death in February this year.
Nasiruddin Ahmed had won the Kaliganj seat in 2011, lost in 2016, and regained it in 2021.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari commented, 'I don't have the final result yet, but from what I've seen, CPIM-Congress got some support in minority areas. Our goal was to consolidate the Hindu vote, and I believe we were successful in that strategy.'

'Will always inspire', Rahul Gandhi pays tribute to Mountain Man Dashrath Manjhi

New Delhi: Ahead of his 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' from Bihar's Sasaram on Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to 'Mountain Man' Dashrath Manjhi on his death anniversary and said that the latter will "always continue to inspire us all". In a post on the social media platform X in Hindi, he said that Manjhi's "struggle reminds us that if intentions are strong, no obstacle is too big". "His determination and passion to accomplish what he set out to do will always inspire us all," Rahul Gandhi said. Notably, Manjhi was known as 'Mountain Man' for single-handedly carving a path through a hill in Gehlaur village to connect it with Wajirganj block in Bihar's Gaya district. Dashrath Manjhi, a native of Gehlaur village, cut a mountain to make a road between his village and Wazirganj. It took him 22 years to work every day with a hammer and a chisel. When his wife died in 1959 after being injured from falling from the mountain, and the same mountain blocked easy access to a nearby hospital in time, he decided to carve a path. With this feat done single-handedly, he is revered by the Manjhi community. Noting his contribution, a stamp featuring Dashrath Manjhi was released by India Post in the "Personalities of Bihar" series on December 26, 2016. A Hindi movie, 'Manjhi – The Mountain Man', was released and well-received. Dashrath Manjhi has a larger-than-life image among the Musahar community. The Bihar government has built a statue and memorial of Dashrath Manjhi. Gehlaur is one of the tourist attractions in the district. A large number of Buddhists come to Bodh Gaya every year, and the majority of them also visit the memorial of the Mountain Man. Majhi's son, Bhagirath Manjhi, is a Congress leader and was inducted into the grand old party days after participating in the 'Samvidhaan Suraksha Sammelan' in Patna. Dashrath Manjhi's son-in-law, Mithun Manjhi, is in the JD(U).

Somebody within govt trying to defame Dharmasthala: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

HUBBALLI: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has endorsed Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's 'conspiracy' claim on the Dharmasthala issue and alleged that somebody within the State Government is involved in defaming the holy town. Speaking to the media here on Saturday, Joshi said that the way Shivakumar has expressed his opinion on the ongoing investigation into the Dharmasthala cases has shown his helplessness in the government. Moreover, Shivakumar admitting the conspiracy, being in the government, itself has led to confusion about whether the Congress government is in connivance with the anonymous person in tarnishing the image of Dharmasthala, Joshi said. Further attacking the State Government over its approach towards the SIT investigation, the BJP leader charged that it seems Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is influenced by the ultra-leftists surrounding him. 'The forces, which were relentlessly trying to undermine the sentiments of the majority of Hindus, are behind the entire issue. The government should stop the digging and submit an interim report before the House,' he demanded. 'Before initiating the investigation, the police should have inquired about the anonymous person by arresting him immediately,' he said, taking serious exception to the police letting the anonymous person speak to the media. Also, raising the doubt over the identity of that person, he said, if he was belonged to another religion, it could be a systematic effort to hurt the Hindu sentiments. 'Before the Hindus get angry over this entire drama, the government should take appropriate action,' he said.
