'Rishabh Pant Sent Voice Note, Shubman Gill Said...': What India Stars Told Chris Woakes After Horrific Injury
Chris Woakes' heroic effort to bat with an injured shoulder in the fifth Test against India will be remembered. Despite his efforts, India won by six runs.
The image of Chris Woakes walking in to bat with his left hand in a sling and hidden inside a jumper on the fifth day of the fifth Test between India and England will remain etched in the memory for some time to come. With England nine down and ever so close to what would've gone down as one of their finest victories and more importantly given them a 3-1 series triumph, an incapacitated Woakes attempted one last push to help his team get over the line. Alas, it wasn't meant to be even though the final few moments proved to be a painful experience for the England allrounder.
India would go on to win the contest by six runs with Woakes not facing a single delivery but being asked to run by his batting partner Gus Atkinkson four times. Despite an injured shoulder, that popped out on the opening day of the Test itself while Woakes was attempting to save a boundary, he ran as naturally as one would when fully fit with 'instinct" taking over.
The result? Woakes was in pain and after the first run, he even feared that the shoulder may have popped out again. Fortunately, it wasn't the case.
Woakes was hailed for his heroic attempt. Every member of the Indian team ensured to acknowledge him with India captain Shubman Gill calling his decision to bat despite the pain 'incredibly brave".
'Shubman said something like: 'That was incredibly brave'" Woakes told The Guardian. 'I told him: 'You've had an unbelievable series, well played, and credit to your team.'"
Before Woakes, Rishabh Pant had also braved a broken foot to resume batting during the Manchester Test. Incidentally, Pant had injured his foot while attempting to reverse-sweep a low full toss from Woakes.
Though Pant managed to bat at Old Trafford, the injury did rule him out of the series finale.
The India wicketkeeper-batter appreciated Woakes' for his gutsy display and the Englishman replied in kind.
'I saw Rishabh had put an image of me on Instagram with a salute emoji, so I replied thanking him: 'Appreciate the love and hope the foot is OK' etc. He then sent me a voice note saying: 'I hope all is OK, good luck with the recovery and I hope we meet again out there some day.' I obviously said sorry for the broken foot."
Despite the fiery exchanges on the field, once the drama ended, the two opponents exchanged smiles and pleasantries. They praised each other for the titanic efforts that made the series one of the most memorable ones of recent times.

‘There's more to life than cricket': Domestic stalwart Priyank Panchal explains early retirement call
Former Gujarat captain and prolific batter Priyank Panchal recently opened up on his decision to retire from all forms of cricket and said, 'there is more to life than cricket.' Panchal, who had led India A in the past and featured in the senior squad, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in May earlier this year. Every cricketer has two careers – the playing & non-playing one. Once I knew I couldn't play for India, it made sense to begin the latter early and get a headstart. Eventually there's more to life than cricket #AMAwithPriyank — Priyank Panchal (@PKpanchal09) August 9, 2025 The domestic veteran played 127 First-Class games and amassed 8,856 runs at 45.18 with 29 centuries and 34 fifties. The 35-year-old also played 97 List A matches, scoring 3,672 runs at 40.80 with eight tons and 21 fifties, while in 59 T20s, he made 1,522 runs at 28.71 with nine half-centuries. Panchal has been a part of the Indian Test team on a couple of occasions, including being called as a replacement for an injured Rohit Sharma. In the home Test series against England in 2021, He was named among the reserve openers alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran. The right-handed opening batter had a breakthrough year in 2016-17 in the Ranji Trophy when he scored 1,310 runs with a highest individual score of 314 not out. It was a season in which Gujarat won the premier domestic competition. Panchal was also a part of the title-winning Gujarat teams in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2015-16 and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

Mason Greenwood And Tyrone Mings Get Into Heated Scuffle in Marseille Vs Villa Friendly
Last Updated: An ugly quarrel broke out between the sides as Greenwood swung his leg at Amadou Onana in a challenge from behind following which Mings intervened. Marseille star Mason Greenwood and Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings got into a scuffle during the pre-season friendly between the sides at the Stade Velodrome in France on Saturday. Greenwood starred in his side's 3-1 triumph over the Premier League outfit on the day as he got his name on the scoresheet and also set up one of teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's brace of goals. Tyrone Mings going at Mason Greenwood today…😬 — Football Away Days (@FBAwayDays) August 9, 2025 Marseille were cruising against Unai Emery and Co. before an ugly quarrel broke out between the sides as Greenwood swung his leg at Amadou Onana in a challenge from behind. Onana squared up to the Englishman as the duo pushed each other before Mings stopped play, picked the ball up and intervened. Mings went on to manhandle the former Manchester United player before the 23-year-old was left with a tattered jersey. However, it was Greenwood who had the last laugh as Marseille played their oppositions on the day out of the park with a clinical display under the stewardship of Roberto De Zerbi. Marseille finished the 2024/25 season of Ligue 1 in second place with 65 points to their name in 34 outings, coming in second only to champions PSG, who also went on to clinch their maiden UEFA Champions League title Luis Enrique. PSG emulated Marseille's feat of winning the prestigious European competition to put their name up in lights. Villa, on the other hand, finished sixth in the English top-flight with 66 points to book their place in the UEFA Europa League, as they narrowly missed out on a UCL spot despite competing for the coveted top-bracket finish for a majority of the season. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
