Trainer Rob Heathcote's bad luck with barrier draws continues with Carbonara in Calaway Gal Stakes
Young apprentice Bailey Wheeler was riding Carbonara, named after one of Heathcote's favourite Italian dishes, spaghetti carbonara, when the horse reared in the gates in the $125,000 QTIS 2YO Jewel Prelude over 1110m at Doomben on February 22.
Carbonara ended up finishing last in a complete forgive run in the nine-horse race won by Sunrays and trained by Kelly Schweida, who went on to win the $500,000 2YO Jewel (1200m) on the Gold Coast last month with Grafterburners.
'She reared in the stalls and that can happen,' Heathcote said about the unfortunate incident in the 2YO Prelude.
'She's a little bit antsy at first and gets a little bit anxious in the barriers.
'Since then we've had to do a fair bit of rehabilitation work and we've had her through our barriers.
'She had a jumpout on Tuesday which was part of the stewards' direction and she passed her barrier certificate. That's why I have her in on Saturday.
'She's an enormous talent. I'm having a horror run with wide barriers but we're still going to run Carbonara on Saturday.'
High-flying apprentice Emily Lang will ride Carbonara in a race dominated in the betting markets by the Tony Gollan -trained topweight Hi Barbie ($3.30 with TAB).
Lang is leading the Brisbane jockeys' premiership with 51 victories, six ahead of Jimmy Orman and Angela Jones, who will ride Hi Barbie, the filly resuming after finishing sixth in the $3m Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) in January.
'From the alley (14) obviously it'll be tough and Hi Barbie is pure quality,' Heathcote said.
'She's a $1.2m filly and mine is a little home-bred.'
Heathcote was clearly thinking about his belly when it came to naming Carbonara, who is paying $14 to win the $200,000 Listed Calaway Gal Stakes.

'I love spaghetti carbonara and she's out of a mare called Alle Vongole, which is a famous Italian dish called alle vongole, which in Italian means 'spaghetti with clams',' Heathcote said.
'It's my favourite dish. The half-brother that's out in the paddock, I think I'll call him 'Linguine'.'
Unbeaten pair Ha'penny Hatch ($5) and Dragonne Rouge ($8.50) should also provide stiff opposition in the race for 2YO fillies, while TAB has rated the John Sargent-trained Listen Sweetheart as a $6 chance in her race debut.

Bezzecchi powers to pole position at Austrian MotoGP
Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi delivered a stunning turnaround to claim his first pole position of the season at the Austrian Grand Prix, while championship leader Marc Marquez's front-row bid ended in the gravel after a costly crash. Bezzecchi had to battle through the Q1 qualifying session on Saturday to secure the final Q2 spot, before clocking one minute and 28.060 seconds to snatch pole position at the Red Bull Ring. It marked Bezzecchi's fifth career pole and his first since the Indian Grand Prix in 2023, with the Italian crediting MotoGP great Valentino Rossi for crucial late-night assistance after Friday's disappointing practice sessions. "Yesterday afternoon, I was a bit sad because I saw some positives. But then in the time attacks from the practice, I couldn't really make any lap time," said Bezzecchi, who progressed through the ranks at Rossi's VR46 Riders Academy. "We discovered what was wrong ... I really have to thank Vale a lot because he came to the box yesterday and we worked until late night and yeah, big thanks to him.'' Bezzecchi is joined on the front row by Gresini Racing's Alex Marquez, who sits second in the championship, and Ducati's Francesco Bagnaia. Marc Marquez, who has won the past five GPs, is seeking a first ever victory at the Red Bull Ring, but after initially setting the fastest lap, he was pushed off the front row and will start fourth on the grid. The Spaniard's attempt at one final flying lap ended dramatically when he clipped the kerb on turn two and crashed into the gravel, unable to improve his time despite steering his battered Ducati through the remaining corners. Meanwhile, KTM Tech3's Maverick Vinales will sit out the rest of the weekend due to intense pain in his left shoulder, having just returned from surgery.

Coco Gauff advances to Cincinnati Open quarter-finals
Coco Gauff is tracking nicely ahead of another crack at the US Open, the No.2 seed securing her place in the quarter-finals in Cincinnati with a 6-2 6-4 win over Lucia Bronzetti. The American, who was awarded a walkover by Dayana Yastremska in the previous round, took an hour and 19 minutes to beat the Italian and reach the last eight of a tournament for the first time since claiming her second grand slam at the French Open. "For the most part I played aggressive. Maybe got a bit passive in some of those games. But it's tough. The balls are super light and they fly," the 2023 US Open winner said. "She wasn't giving me much pace. I was trying to play with control but also aggressive. I think I did well. I missed a couple balls. But I learned from it and was able to close it out." Gauff will next face another Italian in seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who swept past Barbora Krejcikova 6-1 6-2 in a rematch of the 2024 Wimbledon final. It was the pair's first meeting since the 2024 Wimbledon final and Krejcikova needed medical treatment on her left foot when trailing 3-0 in the second set. The Czech's movement was visibly hampered. "I think she wasn't at 100 per cent, but she's an unbelievable player," Paolini said afterwards. "She can put the ball wherever she wants every time, I don't know how she does this. But I'm happy that I tried to stay there mentally until the last point." French qualifier Varvara Gracheva also went through, beating German Ella Seidel 2-6 6-1 6-1 to reach her first WTA 1000 quarter-final.

No stopping ruthless Sinner in Cincinnati Open
When Jannik Sinner is hot he's hot as Felix Auger-Aliassime found out at the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals. The world No.1 extended his winning run on hard courts to 25 matches on Thursday with a ruthless dismissal of the Canadian to reach the tournament semi-finals. Playing in his first tournament since lifting his fourth grand slam title at Wimbledon, the defending champion powered to a 6-0 6-2 victory over Auger-Aliassime. Auger-Aliassime had won both his previous matches against Sinner but could offer little resistance here, with the Italian beginning and ending the contest with runs of six games in a row. Sinner has not been beaten on his favourite surface since a loss to Carlos Alcaraz in Beijing in early October last year. He will now face the winner of giant-killer Terence Atmane and No.7 seed Holger Rune for a place in the final. French qualifier Atmane earned the biggest win of his career by stunning American fourth seed Fritz 3-6 7-5 6- to earn his first Masters 1000 quarter-final berth.
